Profile Inspector does not edit a game’s configuration files. It changes values in NVIDIA’s driver-profile database, which the driver may load when a matching game’s executable starts. A game can still override, ignore, or conflict with those values, so there is no universal “best” setting or guaranteed FPS increase.
What NVIDIA Profile Inspector does
NVIDIA Profile Inspector is an open-source Windows utility that uses NVIDIA’s Driver Settings API to inspect and edit global and application-specific driver profiles. Its functions include:

NVIDIA’s profile system supports both global settings and application-specific settings. Application settings are associated with a program and loaded when that application launches. A per-game profile is therefore usually preferable: it limits the effect of an experiment instead of changing behavior for every compatible game.
Requirements and download
You need:
- Windows
- A supported NVIDIA GPU and compatible NVIDIA display driver
- .NET Framework 4.8
- Administrator privileges when writing changes to the driver-profile database
Profile Inspector is distributed as an extracted executable rather than a conventional installer. Download the release archive from the project’s official GitHub Releases page, extract it to a writable folder, and run nvidiaProfileInspector.exe. If Windows security software warns about the file, first verify that the archive came from the project’s official repository. Do not disable security protections indiscriminately.
The project repository identifies stable release 2.4.0.31, dated January 15, 2026. Its releases page also lists 3.0.1.12 as a later prerelease dated April 18, 2026. Treat those differently: use the stable build for normal troubleshooting unless you specifically need a prerelease fix or feature and accept the additional compatibility risk. Check the current repository release notes before downloading, because driver and Profile Inspector compatibility can change.
Back up your profiles before changing anything
Before editing a setting, export the selected profile—or all customized profiles—to a .nip file. Store the backup somewhere outside the NVIDIA driver installation folder, such as a separate documents folder or another backup location. This gives you a personal restore point if a driver update, game update, or experiment changes the result.
A backup is especially useful when you are testing undocumented or extended values. It can preserve a working preset and make it easier to reproduce or undo a configuration. A removable backup location, such as a USB flash drive, is optional; Profile Inspector does not require one.
How to change an advanced game setting
1. Launch Profile Inspector with the required privileges
Extract the official archive and open nvidiaProfileInspector.exe. If the program cannot write changes, close it and relaunch it with administrator privileges. The exact Windows prompt and behavior can vary by installation and security policy.
2. Select the correct game profile
Use the profile selector at the top of the window. Type the game or application name, then select the matching profile.

If the game is not listed, create a custom profile and associate the game’s executable with it. The important executable is the process that performs the rendering—not necessarily the launcher. A game may use separate launcher, rendering, 32-bit, or 64-bit executables. If you add only the launcher, the driver profile may never apply to the process displaying the game.
When unsure, start the game, open Windows Task Manager, and inspect the running processes while the game is rendering. Use the executable associated with the actual game process. If the title genuinely uses more than one rendering executable, the profile may need the relevant executable entries added.
3. Find the setting
Use Profile Inspector’s search field instead of scrolling through the entire database. The setting-mode selector can expose different groups, including:
- Common: frequently used driver options
- Known: recognized settings that may not appear in the standard interface
- Extended: additional, experimental, legacy, or driver-specific entries
Depending on the driver, GPU, and Profile Inspector version, you may encounter options related to frame-rate limits, vertical synchronization, antialiasing, texture filtering, power management, synchronization technologies, Optimus behavior, and supported DLSS override entries. Seeing a setting does not mean that every game, renderer, driver, or GPU can use it.

Some entries are bitmasks rather than simple on/off or drop-down values. Use the built-in bit editor only when you understand which bits you are changing. Avoid copying hexadecimal values from an old guide and treating them as universal optimizations: a value can be deprecated, ignored, experimental, driver-version-specific, or harmful on another game or GPU generation.
4. Record the original value and change one thing
Before changing a setting, note its original value. Change one setting—or one tightly related group—at a time. Then test the game under repeatable conditions.
This matters because driver settings interact with the game’s renderer and its own graphics options. For example, forcing an antialiasing mode or level that the game does not support can produce no visible change, visual artifacts, instability, or unexpected memory use. The same principle applies to frame generation, synchronization, texture filtering, and other advanced options.

6. Roll back if necessary
If the game crashes, develops visual corruption, loses expected synchronization behavior, or simply shows no meaningful difference, use the original value or one of Profile Inspector’s restore options:
- Restore the individual setting
- Restore the complete profile
- Import the saved
.nipbackup - Restore driver defaults when you intentionally want to remove broader customizations
Restart the game after restoring a profile. If problems began after a driver update and remain across profiles, temporarily remove the custom profile and test with default driver settings before making further changes.
Global profile or per-game profile?
| Choice | What it affects | When to use it | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per-game profile | The selected executable or application | Nearly all game-specific experiments | The profile may point to the wrong executable or be superseded by another application profile |
| Global profile | Multiple compatible games and applications | When you deliberately want the same behavior everywhere | An unintended change can affect unrelated programs |
Start with a per-game profile. A global change is appropriate only when you understand its wider effect. NVIDIA’s driver-settings model gives application-specific profiles higher priority than broader profile layers, so a game profile can take precedence over a global value. That can make a global experiment appear not to work for one title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsProfile Inspector versus NVIDIA App and Control Panel
Profile Inspector is not automatically a replacement for NVIDIA App or NVIDIA Control Panel. NVIDIA App now exposes many modern graphics and driver options in its Graphics area, including global and per-game controls. Profile Inspector remains useful for settings that are hidden from those interfaces, legacy games, and applications that still rely on older driver-profile entries.
Using more than one NVIDIA management layer also creates a troubleshooting complication. If a value appears to apply and then disappears, or the game behaves differently after opening NVIDIA App, check whether another tool has changed or re-saved the profile. Make one tool the source of the change during testing and keep a backup of the configuration you want to restore.

Common problems and fixes
The setting changes, but the game behaves exactly the same
Check these possibilities in order:
- Wrong executable: the profile may contain the launcher rather than the rendering process.
- The game ignores the setting: its engine may control the behavior directly.
- The game overrides the driver: an in-game option may take priority.
- The setting is unsupported: the GPU, renderer, driver, or game may not implement it.
- Another profile layer is taking precedence: inspect both global and application profiles.
- Another management tool changed the value: check NVIDIA App and other driver-tuning utilities.
- The difference is too small to observe: use a repeatable benchmark or scene rather than a single subjective impression.
There are project issue reports describing cases where changes appeared to apply but were not reflected in the driver or game, including reports involving NVIDIA App interaction. Treat those as compatibility reports, not proof that the utility always fails.
Profile Inspector crashes after a driver update
Profile Inspector depends on NVIDIA’s driver-settings interface. A driver update can therefore expose an incompatibility in the utility, particularly around a setting identifier that has changed or is no longer handled as expected.
One documented project issue involved a crash with NVIDIA driver 571.96 and a setting identifier associated with a DLSS frame-generation override. If Profile Inspector begins crashing after a driver update, update to a compatible Profile Inspector release, check the project’s current releases and issue reports, and remove or restore the last advanced setting you changed. Avoid unofficial patched binaries unless their provenance and safety are clear.
A laptop keeps using the wrong GPU
Profile Inspector cannot always override Windows’ GPU assignment. On Windows 10 version 20H1 and later, Windows assigns the graphics processor for applications and can override the preferred-graphics-processor choice in NVIDIA Control Panel.
For a laptop game that uses the wrong GPU, check Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Add or select the game’s actual executable, choose Options, select the intended GPU preference, and save it. Then check the NVIDIA profile and relaunch the game. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows version.
DLSS override settings do nothing or cause problems
Profile Inspector can show modern DLSS-related override entries when the installed driver supports them, but those entries are highly dependent on the driver, game, renderer, GPU generation, and implementation used by the title. A visible override option is not a guarantee that the game will accept it.
Be especially cautious with competitive or anti-cheat-protected online games. Do not force an undocumented DLSS or frame-generation override unless there is explicit, current compatibility information for that particular game and driver. Issue discussions and user reports can identify possibilities, but they are not sufficient evidence that a setting is safe for every online title.

What Profile Inspector cannot guarantee
- It cannot guarantee a performance improvement.
- It cannot force a game to support a renderer or feature it does not implement.
- It cannot ensure that a driver setting wins over the game’s own configuration.
- It cannot make one undocumented value safe across every driver and GPU generation.
- It cannot reliably control laptop GPU routing when Windows has assigned the application elsewhere.
- It cannot prevent a future driver or game update from changing compatibility.
Results depend on the GPU, CPU, driver version, game build, resolution, display refresh rate, renderer, synchronization mode, and the individual setting. Avoid guides promising a fixed percentage FPS gain. A setting that helps one configuration may be neutral or harmful on another.
A safe testing checklist
- Download the archive from the official project repository.
- Confirm that your NVIDIA GPU, driver, Windows installation, and .NET Framework meet the requirements.
- Export the selected profile or all customized profiles to a
.nipbackup. - Use a per-game profile unless you intentionally need a global behavior.
- Associate the profile with the executable that actually renders the game.
- Record the original value before editing.
- Change one setting at a time.
- Click Apply Changes, then restart the game.
- Test with consistent settings and a repeatable scene.
- Restore the value or import the backup when the result is unstable or ineffective.
- Recheck compatibility after a driver, game, NVIDIA App, or Profile Inspector update.
Bottom line
Use NVIDIA Profile Inspector when the regular NVIDIA interfaces do not expose a setting you genuinely need to test. Treat it as a profile editor and diagnostic tool, not a one-click FPS optimizer. Back up first, prefer per-game profiles, target the rendering executable, avoid undocumented values unless you have a specific compatibility reason, and judge the result by repeatable testing rather than by the fact that the setting changed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NVIDIA Profile Inspector change the game’s files?
Yes. Profile Inspector edits NVIDIA’s driver-profile database rather than the game’s own configuration files. A setting may apply when the game’s executable launches, but the game can override or ignore it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Do I need an NVIDIA GPU to use Profile Inspector?
Usually, no. NVIDIA Profile Inspector is a Windows utility for NVIDIA GPUs and compatible drivers. It also requires .NET Framework 4.8 and administrator privileges when writing profile changes.
How do I undo Profile Inspector changes?
Export the selected profile or all customized profiles to a .nip file before editing. Keep that file outside the driver installation folder, then import it or use the restore controls if you need to undo changes.
Should I change global or per-game settings?
Use a per-game profile in most cases. A global profile can affect multiple compatible applications, while an application profile limits the experiment to the selected game’s executable.
Why is my laptop game still using the wrong GPU?
Check Windows Settings > System > Display > Graphics and assign the game’s actual rendering executable to the intended GPU. Windows 10 version 20H1 and later can override NVIDIA Control Panel’s preferred-GPU setting.

The practical formula is: back up, edit a per-game profile, change one setting, apply it, relaunch, test, and roll back if necessary. Profile Inspector can expose useful advanced controls, but whether any setting works depends on the driver, GPU, game renderer, executable, and the game’s own overrides.
