War Thunder does not use one universal camera toggle for every situation. Live battles, ground-vehicle crew positions, aircraft gunner views and replays have separate controls, and what is available depends on the vehicle and mode. Find the specific command you need in the in-game Controls menu, then bind it to a key or button that is easy to reach.
Find and bind the camera command you need
Rather than relying on a default key listed for another platform or control layout, search the Controls menu for the view by name. War Thunder’s command reference includes separate entries for external view, cockpit view, virtual cockpit, gunner view, targeting optics, optical seeker, binoculars, commander sight and driver camera. It also lists replay-only camera controls. These are command names, not confirmation of universal current key assignments. War Thunder Wiki: Controls

- Open the in-game Controls menu.
- Search for the view or function you want, such as cockpit view, gunner view or binoculars.
- Inspect the current binding for your platform and control setup. Assign a key or button if needed, and check for conflicts with other commands.
- Use the command in the relevant vehicle or replay mode. If it is unavailable, check whether that vehicle supports the view and whether you are in the correct mode.
Choose a live-battle view for the task
Think of views as tools for different jobs, not as a single best camera. External and binocular views can help you scan; gunner and targeting optics provide a sight picture for aiming. The usable view, zoom and equipment vary by vehicle. War Thunder Wiki: Optics

- External view: use it to look around the vehicle or aircraft from outside. It is useful for awareness, but it is not the same as aiming through a weapon sight.
- Cockpit or virtual cockpit: use these aircraft views for an inside-the-aircraft perspective. The corresponding controls are distinct; search for the exact view you intend to use.
- Gunner view and targeting optics: use the relevant sight when you need to aim. A vehicle’s optic capability and zoom are not interchangeable with another vehicle’s.
- Binoculars: use them to observe without treating them as the gunner’s aiming sight.

Gunner sight
The gunner’s sight is the view for aiming through the gunner’s optics. Its zoom and available equipment depend on the vehicle.

Commander sight
Commander optics provide a separate observation view where the vehicle supports them. The War Thunder optics guide describes commander sights on many, but not all, vehicles after Rank V; eligibility and features are vehicle-specific and may change. Commander and gunner optics can differ in zoom and night-vision equipment.
Seeing through commander optics does not by itself mean you can fire the main weapon from that view. On supported vehicles, commander weapon control is a distinct capability. A 2023 official forum tutorial recommends checking a vehicle’s hangar X-ray view for commander optics and its capability text for whether the commander can fire the main armament. Its control labels and menu paths reflect that tutorial’s publication date, so search current Controls settings for the relevant commander-view and commander-fire-control commands. Where commander fire control is available, rangefinding can help you correct elevation and parallax. Confirm the vehicle’s actual capability rather than assuming all commander sights provide weapon control.

Driver camera
The driver camera gives you a view from the driver position and can help inspect immediate surroundings or a hull-down position. The optics guide warns that using it disables tank controls other than driving-related controls, so it is not simply another gunner sight.

Aircraft defensive gunner view
Aircraft with defensive gunners may have a gunner camera separate from ordinary cockpit or external views. In a 7 September 2017 development post, the War Thunder Team described moving the defensive gunner view close to the weapon to reduce parallax, while retaining an option to switch back to the classic view in settings. That post documented a specific implementation, not a guarantee about every aircraft or today’s setting labels. Check the current game settings and the aircraft’s available controls. Replay controls are a separate family from live-battle camera controls. The controls reference lists replay options including wing, operator, hover and two-aircraft cameras, as well as zoom and movement controls. Look for replay camera commands in Controls when a replay is open; do not assume a live-battle view binding will move the replay camera. War Thunder Wiki: Controls

Sensor view is for reviewing radar, other sensor information and weapon behavior, rather than selecting a live vehicle camera. Gaijin announced it for client and server replays on 5 March 2024, with filters and markers for selected parameters. Gaijin noted that client replays do not save all battle information for optimization, so information about distant or unseen objects may be missing or less accurate. Its post says, “The server replay however will store more complete information.” If the completeness of sensor data matters, choose a server replay where available; replay behavior may have changed since the post. Quick troubleshooting
- A view command does nothing: confirm you are in a mode and vehicle that support it, then verify the binding in the current Controls menu.
- You can observe through commander optics but cannot fire: observation and commander weapon control are separate; check whether the vehicle supports commander fire control.
- The sight looks different from another vehicle’s: optics, zoom and night-vision equipment can vary by vehicle and crew position.
- You want to rotate or reposition a replay camera: use replay-camera controls, not only live-battle camera commands.
- Replay sensor information seems incomplete: client replays may omit or less accurately record some distant or unseen objects; Gaijin’s 2024 description says server replays store more complete information.
