DayZ loot is controlled by the mission’s Central Economy (CE), not by one universal “loot multiplier.” For an item’s population, edit its entry in db/types.xml (or a registered custom types file), then restart the server and check the RPT and CE logs. Use db/globals.xml for global cleanup and timing parameters, db/economy.xml for subsystem switches, db/events.xml for dynamic events, and cfgspawnabletypes.xml for attachments and cargo. Keep persistent changes in a separate CE folder registered through cfgeconomycore.xml so updates do not overwrite them.

How DayZ’s Central Economy controls loot
The Central Economy continuously tracks item populations, locations, persistence and cleanup. It evaluates each item’s definition, the map’s limits and the current world state before spawning or removing objects. That is why changing a single number in one file can produce no visible result if the file is not loaded, the item is outside the map’s valid limits, or the server has not restarted.

A loot-count change normally belongs in a types entry. Editing cfggameplay.json will not increase the number of rifles, food items or magazines in the world.
Prepare the server before editing
Back up the active mission
Copy the entire mission folder before changing any XML or JSON. A complete copy lets you restore the previous economy if a malformed file prevents the mission from loading or produces unwanted spawns. Keep dated backups rather than replacing one backup repeatedly.

Find the mission actually in use
Open serverDZ.cfg, which is located beside the server executable, and identify the mission selected there. The CE files are inside that mission directory. Editing a different map’s mission folder is the most common reason an apparently correct change has no effect.
Make one controlled change first
Change one item or one parameter, restart, and verify it before making a large batch of edits. This gives you a clear cause if the RPT reports a rejected entry or the resulting loot is not what you intended.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Increase or reduce a single item’s loot
Locate the classname
Open db/types.xml and search for the item’s exact classname. Classnames are case-sensitive in practice because the CE matches the configured class definition. Do not substitute a display name or a shortened weapon name.
Understand the population fields
A representative entry looks like this:
<type name="AK74">
<nominal>6</nominal>
<lifetime>28800</lifetime>
<restock>0</restock>
<min>4</min>
<quantmin>-1</quantmin>
<quantmax>-1</quantmax>
<cost>100</cost>
<flags count_in_cargo="0" count_in_hoarder="0" count_in_map="1"
count_in_player="0" crafted="0" deloot="0"/>
<category name="weapons"/>
<usage name="Military"/>
<value name="Tier3"/>
</type>
nominal: the target population the CE tries to maintain.min: the lower population target that influences when the CE seeks replacements.lifetime: how long an item persists, expressed in seconds in the documented example.restock: the restock timing value for that type. Preserve the format used by the map and server version.quantminandquantmax: quantity ranges for stackable or liquid items. A value of-1in the example means the item does not use a quantity range.cost: the CE cost value used while balancing spawn allocation.flags: controls whether objects in cargo, hoards, the map and player inventories count toward the target, and whether crafted or event-only objects are included.category: the broad item category, such asweapons.usage: location groups where the item is eligible, such asMilitary.value: tier or value groups, such asTier3.
Choose values that match your goal
To make an item more common, raise nominal and, where appropriate, raise min so the CE replenishes it before the population falls too far. To make it rarer, lower both values rather than raising only one. A high nominal target with a low minimum can produce long gaps between restock attempts, while a high minimum can create more frequent replacement activity.
Increasing lifetime keeps items in the world longer; it does not directly create more items. Shortening lifetime accelerates cleanup and can make the map appear less crowded even when nominal is high. Use quantity fields for stack amounts, not for the number of separate objects.

Changing count flags changes which locations contribute to the population count. For example, an item with count_in_map="1" is counted when it is on the map, while zeros in cargo, hoarder and player fields exclude those locations from that particular count. Alter flags only when you understand the resulting population behavior.

Use a custom CE file for durable changes
Direct edits to vanilla files are useful for a quick test, but they are easy to overwrite during a server or map update. A registered custom file leaves the base mission intact, provides a clear rollback point and reduces merge conflicts with mods.
Create and register the custom folder
- Inside the active mission folder, create a directory such as
custom_ce. - Place a file such as
custom_types.xmlin that directory. - Add a CE registration to
cfgeconomycore.xml:
<economycore>
<classes>
<!-- retain the server’s existing rootclass entries -->
</classes>
<ce folder="custom_ce">
<file name="custom_types.xml" type="types" />
</ce>
</economycore>
Merely placing an XML file in db/ does nothing. The <ce> block is what tells the CE to load the folder and file. The same registration mechanism supports types, spawnabletypes, globals, economy, events, messages and, since game version 1.28, randompresets.
Understand replacement and load order
Custom files merge with the vanilla definitions. A matching item name can replace an existing entry, while duplicate definitions are resolved according to load order. Keep one authoritative definition for each classname in your custom set and document intentional overrides. This avoids uncertainty when several mods register the same item.
Register custom categories, usage tags and roots
Declare tags the CE does not know
If a custom item uses a category, usage or value name that is absent from the vanilla limits, declare that name in cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. An unknown tag can cause the entry to be rejected, so adding the item definition alone is not sufficient.

Add a root class only for a new hierarchy
Use a rootclass in cfgeconomycore.xml only when the item belongs to a class hierarchy that does not inherit from a registered root. Descendants of standard roots such as Inventory_Base, DefaultWeapon and DefaultMagazine normally need no extra root declaration. Adding unnecessary roots makes troubleshooting harder and can expose classes the CE cannot resolve.
Change global economy behavior
db/globals.xml: timers and limits
Use globals.xml for global CE parameters rather than trying to repeat a value in every item entry. Preserve the parameter’s declared type: type="0" represents an integer and type="1" represents a float. If a decimal value is declared as an integer, it can be converted incorrectly, including becoming zero.
db/economy.xml: subsystem switches
The economy file controls whether major CE subsystems initialize, load existing state, respawn entities and save state. Its switches cover dynamic entities, animals, infected and vehicles. These flags can disable an entire subsystem; they are not a substitute for tuning one weapon or food item in types.xml.
db/events.xml: dynamic events
Helicopter crashes, convoys and similar dynamic events are defined through events.xml and related event files. Edit event definitions when the goal is to change event frequency or behavior. Event loot and ordinary map loot can interact, so verify both the event file and the relevant item definitions after a change.
cfgspawnabletypes.xml: attachments and cargo
This file controls attachment groups, cargo presets and spawn-damage ranges. It is the right place to make a weapon appear with a particular optic or to adjust a container’s starting contents. It does not set the world population target for the weapon itself.

Validate, restart and verify
Validate before deployment
- Check that every XML element is properly opened and closed, attributes use straight quotation marks and the file has one valid root element.
- Confirm that classnames, category names, usage names and value names are spelled exactly as registered.
- Validate
cfggameplay.jsonwith a JSON parser if you edited it; one syntax error can make the server fall back to defaults. - Keep numeric values in the format expected by the parameter, especially integer versus float globals.
Restart the server
Stop and start the server after changing mission CE files. A restart ensures the mission configuration and saved economy state are read again. Simply reconnecting to a running process does not reload the XML definitions.
Read the RPT and CE logs
After startup, inspect the RPT and Central Economy logs for malformed XML, rejected files, unknown tags, missing roots and mission-file warnings. The official vanilla configuration exposes diagnostic switches including log_ce_lootspawn, log_ce_lootcleanup, log_ce_lootrespawn and log_ce_statistics. Enable only the diagnostics needed for a specific investigation, then return noisy logging to normal once the problem is identified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAllow for the economy to settle
The CE maintains targets over time rather than guaranteeing that every changed item appears immediately beside a player. Check several eligible locations and allow the server’s spawn and cleanup cycles to run. Existing objects, inventory-count flags and event activity can all affect what you see during the first check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot changes that do not work
Nothing changes after a restart
- Confirm the edited mission is the one selected in
serverDZ.cfg. - If the file is custom, verify it is registered through a
<ce>block incfgeconomycore.xml. - Check that the server was fully restarted rather than merely having its player connection reset.
- Read the RPT for a rejected file or XML parse error.
The item never spawns
Recheck the exact classname, its root class, and every category, usage and value tag. An unknown tag or missing root can cause the CE to reject the entry. Also verify that the selected map and server version support the limits you assigned.
Loot appears in the wrong places
Review the item’s usage and value tags. These tags constrain eligible locations and tiers; a valid item definition with an overly broad usage can place high-value equipment in areas you did not intend, while an invalid tier can prevent spawning altogether.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
A gameplay change has no effect
Stamina, base-building checks, UI behavior, temperatures and object-spawner settings belong in cfggameplay.json. Validate its JSON syntax and confirm you did not use it for a CE population change. If parsing fails, the server can silently use default gameplay settings.
A float value becomes zero
Inspect the corresponding globals.xml entry. Decimal parameters require type="1"; integer parameters use type="0". Correct the type, validate the XML and restart before judging the result.
An update undoes the change
Move the override out of the vanilla mission file and into a registered custom folder. Keep the custom file under version control or in dated backups, and recheck its registration after map updates. The vanilla files can then be replaced without erasing your tuning.
Direct vanilla edits versus registered custom files
| Approach | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Edit the vanilla CE file | A quick one-off test on a private server | Simpler initially, but easier to overwrite and more prone to update or merge conflicts |
| Register a custom CE file | Persistent production settings and modded content | Requires a <ce> registration and valid tags, but improves update safety, rollback and traceability |
For a live community server, the custom-file approach is usually the safer default. Keep a small file containing only your intentional overrides, record why each value was chosen and remove obsolete entries when a mod or map changes its classnames.
A repeatable workflow for increasing loot
- Back up the active mission folder and note the mission path in
serverDZ.cfg. - Decide whether you are changing one item, a global timer, a subsystem, an event or attachments; choose the narrowest file.
- For an item, copy its existing
typesdefinition into a registered custom file and adjustnominal,min, lifetime or quantity values deliberately. - Keep its category, usage, value and count flags unless you have a specific reason to change them.
- Declare any genuinely new tags in
cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xmland add a root class only for a new hierarchy. - Validate XML or JSON, then restart the server.
- Inspect RPT and CE logs for load errors and enable targeted CE diagnostics if the behavior is unclear.
- Check multiple valid spawn locations after the CE has had time to restock, then adjust one variable at a time.
Operational checklist
- Mission backup completed before editing.
- Correct mission confirmed in
serverDZ.cfg. - Narrowest CE file selected for the goal.
- Custom files registered through
cfgeconomycore.xml. - Classnames and tags match the server’s definitions.
- Global parameter types preserved as integer or float.
- XML and JSON syntax validated.
- Server restarted after deployment.
- RPT and CE logs reviewed.
- Diagnostic logging reduced after troubleshooting.
Why the file choice matters
DayZ’s economy is modular by design. Item population, global limits, subsystem state, dynamic events and spawn contents are related but not interchangeable. Treating every loot problem as a types.xml problem can leave event behavior unchanged; treating every gameplay problem as a loot problem can produce invalid or ignored settings. Start with the player-visible outcome, map it to the responsible CE file, make the smallest registered override, and verify the server’s interpretation in its logs.
