During playback, open the Crunchyroll player’s gear icon, choose Subtitles/CC, and select a language that is listed. To make that choice the default, use Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language on the website, or open your avatar menu in the mobile app and choose Subtitle/CC Language. Subtitle appearance is a separate setting: use profile preferences on the website, device accessibility controls in supported apps, or the caption menu on some TVs. The available tracks and styling controls can differ by title, season, episode, region, and device.
Change the subtitle language for the video playing now
These controls change the track for the episode you are watching, without changing your account-wide preference. Crunchyroll describes the language selector as working on supported devices; the exact layout can vary slightly by app version and platform. See the official instructions at Crunchyroll Help.

- Start the show or movie on Crunchyroll.
- Move the pointer over the video, or tap the screen, to reveal the playback controls.
- Select the gear or Settings icon.
- Open Subtitles/CC.
- Choose the language shown in the list. The new track should apply immediately or after a short reload.
This is the quickest method when you want to switch languages for one episode, compare available translations, or temporarily override your usual preference. It does not alter the default stored for your profile. If you move to another episode, Crunchyroll will use your saved default when that language is available, unless you make another in-player selection.

When subtitles cannot be turned off
In some regions, certain Japanese-audio titles require subtitles to remain enabled. In those cases, the player may not offer an off option even though other titles do. This is a title- and region-dependent rule, not a failure of the gear menu. If an off option is present, selecting it affects only the current playback session; it does not change which language is selected by default.
Set a default subtitle language
A default tells Crunchyroll which subtitle language to select when a compatible video starts. It does not add a language track that the title, season, episode, or region does not provide. Think of the default as a preference, not a download or catalog unlock.
Website
- Sign in at Crunchyroll and select your avatar.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Preferences.
- Find Subtitle/CC Language.
- Select your preferred language and leave the settings page after the choice is saved.
New videos should use that language when it is available. A particular episode can still fall back to another available track or show no selectable track if the language is not licensed for it. If you share an account, remember that these are profile-based choices: edit the profile you actually use for playback rather than another household member’s profile.

- Open the Crunchyroll app and tap your avatar.
- Select Subtitle/CC Language in the settings menu.
- Choose the language you want as the default.
The mobile preference affects future playback in the app. You can still override it for one episode through the in-player Settings > Subtitles/CC menu. If the app starts an episode in another language, first check whether that episode offers your chosen track; a missing track is not corrected by repeatedly saving the preference.
Change subtitle and caption appearance
Language selection and visual styling are different controls. A language setting chooses the words; an appearance setting changes how captions are rendered. Crunchyroll’s current custom-caption guidance is documented at Crunchyroll Help.
Website profile controls
- Open the profile you want to edit.
- Select the avatar, then Settings.
- Open Preferences.
- Select the subtitle or caption appearance option.
- Adjust the available controls, such as text font and the background or window color, then save or close the panel.
These are profile-based preferences, so they apply when that profile is used on compatible web playback. The exact list of controls can change as Crunchyroll updates its player. Appearance changes do not translate text, add closed captions, or make a track appear in the language menu.
If you are trying to improve readability, change one visual option at a time and check it against a scene with both dialogue and a busy background. A background or window color can make text easier to distinguish, while font controls affect the shape and spacing of the letters. The controls available to you, however, are limited to those exposed by the website player.

Mobile and other app playback
For app caption styling, Crunchyroll directs viewers to the operating system’s accessibility caption settings. Open your device’s accessibility settings, find its caption or subtitle appearance controls, and adjust the options offered there. The device controls may include font size, text color, background, window, or edge treatment, but the available choices depend on the operating system and app support. If the app does not honor a device-level setting, there is no separate Crunchyroll appearance menu guaranteed on that device.
This is why a style you saved in a web browser may not look identical in a phone or television app. The website profile controls and the device accessibility layer are separate systems. Change the setting on the device where you watch, then reopen playback to check whether that app supports the selected caption style.

LG TV
On the Crunchyroll app for LG TV, the player includes a Closed Caption Styling option. Use the caption styling control while the video is playing to adjust supported closed-caption properties. LG’s help information distinguishes these from subtitles that are built into the video: those subtitles cannot be restyled through the LG player. Details are listed in Crunchyroll’s LG TV guide.
The distinction matters if a subtitle appears fixed in size, color, or position. A built-in subtitle is part of the video presentation rather than an independent closed-caption layer, so the TV’s styling menu cannot rewrite it. The presence of a Closed Caption Styling menu therefore does not mean every subtitle track can be customized.
Android TV
The Android TV app lists both caption styling and subtitle-language preferences as supported features. Open the player’s settings for a current-video language change, and use the app’s subtitle or caption preference controls for defaults and supported styling. Menus can differ by Android TV device and software version; the feature list is described in Crunchyroll’s Android TV guide.
If you cannot find a control in the same place shown in a guide, check whether you are in the player settings or the app’s general settings. Those two areas serve different purposes: the player changes the current track, while a preference is intended to carry into later playback. Android TV hardware and software variations can also change labels or menu placement.
Choose the right path for what you want to change
| Goal | Where to change it | What it affects | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change language for the episode playing now | Player gear or Settings > Subtitles/CC | Current video session | Only tracks offered for that video appear |
| Choose a default language | Website: avatar > Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language; mobile: avatar > Subtitle/CC Language | Future playback for that account or app | Cannot make an unavailable track appear |
| Change appearance on the website | Profile > avatar > Settings > Preferences > subtitle/caption appearance | Supported web playback for that profile | Controls and labels may change with the player |
| Change appearance in a mobile app | Device accessibility caption settings | Captions rendered by compatible apps | Support depends on the device and app |
| Style captions on LG TV | Player > Closed Caption Styling | Closed captions | Built-in subtitles cannot be restyled there |
| Use subtitle preferences on Android TV | Android TV Crunchyroll app settings and player controls | Language defaults, current track, and supported styling | Exact menu placement varies by device |
Use the table by identifying both the scope and the type of change. Scope means current video versus future playback. Type means language track versus visual appearance. Choosing the wrong path is the most common reason a setting seems not to stick: a player selection is not an account default, and a font setting is not a language selector.
Check whether a language exists before starting an episode
Crunchyroll’s language catalog is not necessarily identical for every season or episode. A show page can list languages that do not apply to every item in the series. Use the show’s details page to verify the specific availability:
- Open the show’s details page.
- Select More Details.
- Inspect the listed audio and subtitle languages.
- Check the individual season and episode when the page provides separate information.
- Start playback and confirm the same language appears under Subtitles/CC.
Check both audio and subtitle listings. A language offered for dubbing is not automatically offered as a subtitle, and a subtitle language shown for one season may not be present in another. Confirming the episode after opening the player is the final check because the catalog page and the playable asset can differ by item.
Crunchyroll explains that licensing can make language availability differ by region. A language shown for a series, but missing from one episode or from your location, is therefore not proof that your settings are wrong. The catalog explanation is available in What languages are available for shows?.
Why captions may be missing on a dubbed episode
Audio dubbing and captions are separate assets. A dubbed episode does not automatically include a caption track, and Crunchyroll says some titles provide an English CC option while others do not. If English CC is absent from the player menu, it may simply not have been supplied for that episode. The distinction and support steps are covered in Crunchyroll’s web-subtitle troubleshooting article.

Subtitles intended for translation and closed captions are also not interchangeable labels. A subtitle track may contain translated dialogue, while a CC track can include dialogue plus additional audio information when the provider supplies it. Do not assume that switching from a dub to the original Japanese audio will automatically reveal English CC, or that an English subtitle track is equivalent to an English CC track.

Use these checks when a language should be available but the subtitle track is not rendering in web playback:
- Turn off a VPN. A VPN can make the service identify a different region, changing the catalog or preventing a track from loading.
- Try a private or incognito window. If subtitles work there, an extension, cached data, or a browser setting is a likely cause.
- Disable extensions one at a time. Content blockers, script filters, and privacy extensions can interfere with the player.
- Update the browser or switch browsers. Test a current supported browser rather than repeatedly changing subtitle settings.
- Test another device. This separates an account or title issue from a problem limited to one browser or computer.
- Recheck the title details and region. Confirm that the desired track is listed for the exact season and episode.
Use the tests in order so you can identify whether the problem follows the title or stays with one browser. For example, a track that appears in a private window points toward an extension or browser-state conflict, while a track missing on several devices is more consistent with title or regional availability. Avoid treating a browser problem as evidence that Crunchyroll removed the language from the catalog.
If the track still does not appear, contact Crunchyroll support and include the episode title, the language you want, and your viewing location. Those details help support distinguish a missing asset, a regional licensing restriction, and a playback fault. Mention whether the issue occurs on one browser, multiple browsers, or another supported device, and whether the language is listed under More Details.
Understand subtitles, closed captions, and styling limits
- Subtitle language: selects a translated or otherwise available text track.
- Closed captions (CC): may include spoken dialogue and additional audio information, but only when a CC track is supplied.
- Appearance: changes font, color, background, window, or related rendering properties where the platform exposes those controls.
Because these layers are separate, changing a font cannot add a missing language, and selecting a new language cannot guarantee a particular visual style. Platform support also matters: a website profile setting, a phone’s accessibility setting, and an LG TV’s closed-caption menu are not interchangeable.

There is a further difference between captions that the player renders and subtitles built into the video image. Rendered captions can be affected by a supported styling control. Built-in subtitles remain part of the picture and cannot be reformatted through that player, as the LG TV guidance explains. If styling changes appear to work for one track but not another, the tracks may use different formats or caption layers.
A reliable workflow when your preferred language is unavailable
- Check More Details on the show page for the exact season and episode.
- Confirm your account’s region and disconnect any VPN that could alter location detection.
- Try the player’s Subtitles/CC menu rather than relying only on the default preference.
- Test the same episode on another supported device.
- If the language is listed but still missing, contact support with the title, episode, desired language, and location.
This sequence prevents wasted time changing appearance controls when the actual issue is catalog availability. It also separates a missing track from a track that exists but fails to render. Keep the title, season, episode, language, device, and viewing location together when reporting the issue so support can reproduce the same conditions.
Crunchyroll Help summarizes the supported-device behavior this way: “This feature works on all supported devices.” In practice, “supported” still matters: each platform can expose different styling controls, and catalog licensing determines which tracks can be selected.

Can I set a default subtitle language?
Yes. On the website, open your avatar, choose Settings > Preferences > Subtitle/CC Language, and select a default. In the mobile app, tap your avatar and choose Subtitle/CC Language. The preference is used when the selected language is available.
Why does my default language not apply?
The episode may not include that language, or the language may be unavailable in your region. Check More Details for the specific season and episode, then confirm the player’s Subtitles/CC list.
Why can’t I turn subtitles off?
Some Japanese-audio titles in certain regions require subtitles to remain on. For those titles, an off option may not be provided.
How do I change subtitle font or color?
On the website, edit the profile through avatar > Settings > Preferences, then open the subtitle or caption appearance controls. On supported mobile and other apps, use the device’s accessibility caption settings. LG TV has a player-level Closed Caption Styling option for closed captions.
Why did a style change work on one platform but not another?
Web profile settings, device accessibility settings, and TV player controls are separate. Each platform exposes different options, and some subtitles are built into the video and cannot be restyled.
Does a dubbed episode always have English captions?
No. Dubbing and captions are separate assets. Some titles include an English CC track, but others do not.
Why is a language listed for the show but missing from an episode?
Availability can differ by season, episode, and region because of licensing. Use More Details and then verify the exact episode’s player menu.
What should I send support if subtitles are missing?
Provide the episode title, desired language, and viewing location. Also explain which browser or device you tested and whether the language is listed for that episode.
Do these instructions work on every device?
Crunchyroll says the language feature works on supported devices, but menu names and styling controls vary. Website, mobile, LG TV, and Android TV paths are not identical.

Use subtitle or caption appearance controls in website profile preferences. In supported apps, use the device’s accessibility caption settings; LG TV also provides Closed Caption Styling for closed captions.
Why can’t I turn subtitles off?
Some Japanese-audio titles in certain regions require subtitles to stay enabled.
Do dubbed episodes include captions?
Not always. Dubbing and captions are separate assets, and an English CC track appears only when that title and episode provide one.
What should I do if subtitles do not show on the web?
Turn off any VPN, test a private window, check extensions, update or switch browsers, try another device, and verify title and regional availability. Contact support with the episode, language, and location if the problem remains.
The Bottom Line
For a one-time change, use the player’s Settings > Subtitles/CC menu. For a recurring choice, save Subtitle/CC Language in your website or mobile preferences. Treat appearance as a separate, platform-dependent setting: website profile controls, device accessibility options, LG TV’s closed-caption menu, and Android TV controls do not expose identical features. If a language is absent, verify the exact season and episode, region, and licensing availability before troubleshooting the player.
