DayZ has no single server-side difficulty slider. To make a server more hardcore, administrators combine switches in serverDZ.cfg with optional mission-level values in cfggameplay.json. The first file handles core rules such as camera perspective, crosshair, personal light, lighting, respawn delay and structure damage. The JSON file supplies map-specific gameplay tuning and must be explicitly enabled. Stop the server, back up both files, edit the file belonging to the mission in use, restart with the intended configuration, and test from a connected client.

What “difficulty” means on a DayZ server
In DayZ, “difficulty” is a collection of independent rules rather than one numeric setting. A server can enforce first-person play while leaving other assists enabled, make nights darker without changing the camera, increase the wait after death, or remove protection from bases and containers. Treat each rule as a separate decision and document the combination you want before editing.

Bohemia’s gameplay-settings documentation describes the mission JSON approach this way: “Gameplay settings provide a way for server admins to tweak the game’s behavior by simply modifying values inside the gameplay settings’ JSON file.” That file is optional, while serverDZ.cfg is the normal server configuration loaded at startup.
The two configuration layers

The mission file is not global. A valid JSON file placed in a different mission directory is ignored because the server loads the mission named in the class Missions block.

Decide which access method you have
Your editing path depends on how the server is hosted. A self-hosted installation normally gives you direct access to the executable directory, serverDZ.cfg, and mission files. A rented server may hide those files behind a web control panel. Panels often expose equivalent controls for third-person view, crosshair, personal light, lighting, time acceleration and persistence, but labels and available fields vary by provider and can change without matching the file names exactly.

If a panel writes configuration files for you, do not edit a second copy and expect it to win. Determine which file or startup option the panel actually uses, then make and verify changes in that authoritative location.

Stop the server first
Shut down the DayZ server cleanly before changing either file. Editing while the process is running can leave you with an in-memory configuration that does not match what is saved on disk, and a later stop operation may overwrite your change.
Back up the active files
Copy the current serverDZ.cfg and the entire mission folder to a dated backup location. Keep the original directory structure. A backup lets you restore a known-good configuration if the server refuses to start, a setting is ignored, or a later experiment produces an unwanted rule combination.
Identify the active mission
Open serverDZ.cfg and find the class Missions block. Record the mission selected there, including its map and scenario name. You will use that exact mission directory for cfggameplay.json; copying a file into another map’s folder has no effect on the running server.

Server-level controls in serverDZ.cfg
These entries use DayZ server-configuration syntax: each assignment ends with a semicolon. Place them in the active serverDZ.cfg beside the executable, not in the JSON file.

The binary switches shown with a value of 1 are the documented form for disabling the corresponding feature. Do not assume that every gameplay option uses the same syntax or that a key belongs in both files. For mission-level options, use the JSON template shipped with the same map and game version.
First-person and interface restrictions
For a first-person survival ruleset, set disable3rdPerson = 1;. If you also want players to judge aim without an on-screen aid, add disableCrosshair = 1;. These are independent: disabling third person does not remove the crosshair, and removing the crosshair does not force a camera perspective.
Night visibility
Set disablePersonalLight = 1; when you do not want the player’s ambient light to soften darkness. Set lightingConfig = 1; for the documented darker-night server configuration where that server-level value applies. If you enable the mission gameplay file and it contains a WorldsData::lightingConfig value, that mission value overrides the server-level lighting value. In that case, change the effective value in the JSON rather than repeatedly changing the server-level line.
Respawn delay
respawnTime is expressed in seconds. Decide the delay outside the configuration editor, then enter the resulting integer in the server file. Because this is a death-to-respawn wait, test it with a connected client rather than inferring success from the file alone.

Base and container protection
disableBaseDamage = 1; and disableContainerDamage = 1; are protection switches. They are useful when you want harsh survival and combat rules without allowing those structures or containers to be damaged. They address different object categories, so enabling one does not automatically enable the other.
Enable and edit mission gameplay settings
Turn on the gameplay file
DayZ will not load cfggameplay.json merely because the file exists. Add enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; to the active serverDZ.cfg, save it, and restart the server. The setting is a server-configuration directive; it is not JSON and therefore uses the semicolon-terminated syntax shown above.
Copy the map’s template
Use the template shipped with the map and game version. For Chernarus, the documented source path is DZworldschernaruspluscecfggameplay.json; use the equivalent template for another map. Copy that file into the mission folder selected by class Missions. Do not build a new file from memory: the shipped template defines the keys and nesting that the current game version expects.
Understand the JSON sections
Typical templates contain GeneralData, PlayerData, WorldsData, BaseBuildingData and MapData. The exact keys and available values belong to the template for your map and version. World lighting, player behavior, base-building behavior and map-interface behavior may therefore live in different sections of the same mission file.

Keep double-quoted property names, valid commas and matching braces. Do not add a trailing comma after the final property, and do not use comments inside the file unless the shipped template explicitly supports them. Preserve the template’s structure while changing only the values you intend to test.

Complete procedure
- Stop the DayZ server. Use the normal stop control or service command and wait until the process has exited.
- Back up the active configuration. Save copies of
serverDZ.cfgand the mission folder before touching either file. - Read
class Missions. Record the exact mission selected by the server; this determines where the gameplay JSON must go. - Edit server-level rules. In the
serverDZ.cfgbeside the executable, add or change the documented camera, crosshair, personal-light, lighting, respawn and damage entries you need. - Enable mission gameplay settings when required. Add
enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;if you are changing values held incfggameplay.json. - Install the correct template. Copy the map’s shipped
cfggameplay.jsoninto the active mission folder, replacing an older copy only after preserving it in your backup. - Edit JSON values carefully. Keep the template’s sections and syntax intact. Change only documented fields, including the relevant value under
WorldsDatawhen mission-level lighting is intended to control the result. - Save and launch with the intended configuration. Start the server using the command or service definition that includes
-config=serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm the mission and connect. Verify that the startup selection matches the folder you edited, then join with a client and test each changed behavior in an appropriate situation: camera and crosshair in play, personal light and darkness at night, and respawn delay after death.
- Record the working change. Keep the tested files together with a short note of the date, mission and rules so a future map change or panel update does not silently replace them.
Build a difficulty preset without a slider
Use the following combinations as planning checklists. They are not additional settings; each row points to the documented control that implements the desired rule.

Change one group at a time on a live community server when possible. Players can then tell which rule changed, and you can revert a single edit without discarding unrelated settings.

The JSON file is ignored
Check three conditions in order: enableCfgGameplayFile = 1; is present in the configuration actually loaded at startup; cfggameplay.json is inside the mission selected by class Missions; and the server was restarted after both edits. A correctly formatted file in the wrong mission folder has no effect.
Lighting still looks unchanged
When the gameplay file is enabled, WorldsData::lightingConfig overrides the server-level lighting value. Inspect the mission JSON’s effective lighting field, confirm that it belongs to the selected map, then restart and test during the night cycle. Also check whether disablePersonalLight was changed separately; personal light and world lighting are distinct controls.
The server fails to start after a JSON edit
Restore the backup to confirm that the file is the cause. Then compare the edited file with the shipped template: look for a missing quote, brace or comma, an accidental comment, or a key copied from a different map or game version. Make one correction at a time and restart after each valid save.

The server starts but a rule is not active
Confirm that you edited the file named by the startup option -config=serverDZ.cfg, rather than a spare copy. Check spelling, semicolons and the value type. Join from a client to test the behavior; reading a configuration file does not prove that the running process loaded it.

The panel may regenerate serverDZ.cfg or supply a startup override. Use the provider’s current instructions to identify the authoritative field, save the setting there, restart through the panel and verify the resulting behavior. If the panel does not expose a mission-level field, request file access or use only the controls it documents.
Map changes, updates and rollback discipline
Because cfggameplay.json is mission-specific, changing maps requires a new check even when the desired rules are identical. Locate the new mission in class Missions, copy that map’s shipped template, and transfer only settings supported by the new template. Do not assume that a Chernarus file is valid for another map.
Keep a pristine template and a separate customized copy. When the game server updates, compare the new template with your customized file before replacing it. This preserves newly introduced structure while avoiding unsupported keys from an older version.
For rollback, stop the server, restore the backed-up serverDZ.cfg and mission JSON, start with -config=serverDZ.cfg, and test from a client. If the rollback works, reapply changes individually rather than restoring an entire experimental set at once.
Verification checklist for administrators
- The server process is stopped before files are changed.
- Backups contain both the active server configuration and the active mission folder.
- The selected mission in
class Missionsmatches the folder containingcfggameplay.json. enableCfgGameplayFile = 1;is present when mission JSON values are used.- Server-level entries use semicolons; mission entries remain valid JSON.
- The startup definition includes
-config=serverDZ.cfg. - The server has been restarted after saving edits.
- A connected client has tested camera, crosshair, personal light, night lighting, respawn delay or damage behavior as applicable.
- Lighting precedence has been checked whenever both server and mission values are present.
- The working configuration is dated and stored with its map and version context.
What to remember
To change DayZ server difficulty, combine the documented switches in serverDZ.cfg with the map-specific controls in cfggameplay.json. Enable the gameplay file, place it in the mission selected by class Missions, account for mission-level lighting precedence, restart with the intended configuration and verify the result in game. Managed hosting panels can simplify the same work, but their labels and available options are provider-specific.
