You can change the theme, UI density, message layout, zoom, chat text size, and spacing. Desktop, browser, and mobile Discord do not offer exactly the same options, and Discord does not provide a single switch for completely rearranging its navigation.
The steps below reflect Discord’s documented interface as of August 18, 2026. Menu names and feature availability can vary slightly by platform, account, experiment, or rollout.

Change Discord’s UI on desktop or in a browser
- Open Discord.
- Select the User Settings gear beside your username.
- Select Appearance.
- Choose the theme, density, message layout, zoom, and text settings you want.
Discord’s current desktop Appearance menu documents Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, and Sync with computer. Your client may show a different selection while Discord rolls out updates or experiments. See Discord’s current Appearance guide for the latest labels.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Light: A light interface with dark-gray text. Discord also offers a dark-sidebar option.
- Ash: A mid-gray interface with white text.
- Dark: A charcoal or dark-gray interface with white text.
- Onyx: A darker gray-and-black appearance.
- Sync with computer: Follows your computer’s light or dark appearance setting.
Change Discord’s UI on iPhone or Android
- Open the Discord mobile app.
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the gear icon in the top-right.
- Scroll to Appearance.
- Select a theme or adjust the available mobile appearance controls.
Discord’s current mobile documentation lists Light, Dark, Midnight, and Automatic. Automatic follows your phone’s system appearance setting. The available menu can change between mobile releases.

- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions
- WORKS WITH WINDOWS SONIC — Make the most of the headset’s powerful drivers by pairing it with lifelike surround sound that places audio with pinpoint accuracy, heightening in-game awareness and immersion
Desktop and mobile themes do not always correspond visually. For example, Discord says that the desktop Ash theme may appear as Dark on mobile. If available, Sync across clients can synchronize your selection between desktop, browser, and mobile, but it does not guarantee identical rendering on every device.
Mobile Discord is not simply a smaller desktop window. Tapping a channel, DM, or group-chat name at the top opens its details, and swiping across a message can invoke reply behavior. Mobile also includes Message Previews under Appearance, which can simplify or hide previews in the Messages tab. Discord explains these changes in its mobile layout documentation.
Make Discord dark, light, or automatic
| Goal | Desktop or browser | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Dark mode | Appearance → Dark | Appearance → Dark |
| Darker black appearance | Choose Onyx if shown | Choose Midnight if shown |
| Light mode | Appearance → Light | Appearance → Light |
| Follow the device theme | Sync with computer | Automatic |
Midnight should not be treated as a universally available desktop theme. Discord’s mobile documentation specifically described it as a mobile option, while newer Appearance menus can vary by client. Use the options actually displayed in your version of Discord.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMake Discord more compact or spacious
Discord separates general interface spacing from chat-message spacing. Changing one does not necessarily change the other.
Change general UI density
- Open User Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Find UI Density.
- Choose Compact, Default, or Spacious.
- Compact: Shows more content at once, but feels denser.
- Default: Keeps Discord’s standard balance.
- Spacious: Adds breathing room and can make controls easier to scan or tap, at the cost of showing less content.
On desktop, UI density can also affect navigation spacing.
Change the chat message layout
- Open User Settings → Appearance.
- Find Message Spacing.
- Under Chat Message Display, choose Default or Compact.
Compact chat message display removes user icons from the chat view and creates a denser presentation. It is separate from the general UI Density setting.

Adjust message-group spacing
Use Message Group Spacing when messages feel visually crowded or run together. Increase it for easier scanning; reduce it if you want more messages visible without changing the entire interface density.

Make Discord text larger or smaller
Discord provides separate controls for the whole interface and for chat text:
- Zoom Level: Changes the size of Discord interface elements, including text.
- Chat Font Scaling: Changes chat text while leaving other interface elements comparatively unchanged.
- Message Group Spacing: Adds separation between groups of messages, which can improve readability.
On the desktop app, adjust Discord’s zoom control or slider in Appearance. On Discord Web, the browser controls the overall page zoom. Typical browser shortcuts are Ctrl or Cmd plus + or -, depending on the browser.
If only chat messages are too small, increase Chat Font Scaling first. If every Discord control is too small, increase Zoom Level. Discord notes that zoom amplifies the selected font size, so avoid immediately maxing out both settings.
Use custom Discord themes
Discord’s current support documentation identifies additional themes and custom-theme creation as Nitro benefits. Free users may be able to preview themes on desktop, but previewing does not necessarily mean that the theme can be applied, created, or shared by that account.
Create a custom theme
- Open User Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Under Color Themes, select Custom Theme.
- Choose Dark or Light mode.
- Pick colors using the color field, hue slider, color picker, or hexadecimal input.
- Add more colors to create a gradient if desired.
- Adjust the gradient direction and color intensity.
- Select Apply.
The documented custom gradient supports up to five colors. The exact controls and availability can vary by platform and account.

Share a custom theme
Discord says Nitro subscribers can share, preview, and apply custom themes on the desktop app and browser client. Mobile users have more limited capabilities and can generally preview and apply shared themes rather than create or share them in the same way.
- Open the custom-theme sidebar.
- Select the Share icon.
- Choose users or channels.
- Add an optional message.
- Select Send.
- The recipient can select Preview, then Apply if supported on that platform and account.
Improve Discord accessibility and contrast
If the goal is readability rather than decoration, open User Settings → Accessibility. Theme selection alone may not solve problems with contrast, text size, or crowded messages.
Discord documents a contrast-synchronization setting related to Windows High Contrast. When enabled, Windows High Contrast can affect Discord’s normal theme behavior. If Dark or Light controls appear disabled, check whether Windows High Contrast is active and review Discord’s Accessibility settings. Disabling contrast synchronization can restore Discord’s usual theme controls. This behavior is specifically relevant to Windows and may not apply to macOS, Android, or iPhone.
You can combine accessibility settings with Chat Font Scaling, Zoom Level, Message Group Spacing, and your operating system’s text or display controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Change the Discord app icon
Custom app icons are available to Nitro and Nitro Basic members according to Discord’s official documentation.
- Open User Settings.
- Select Appearance.
- Select App Icon.
- Choose the icon you want.
On Android and iOS, this changes the mobile app icon. On desktop, it changes the icon inside the Discord app and does not necessarily change the Windows or macOS launcher shortcut. See Discord’s Custom App Icon guide for platform details.

Why Discord still looks different after changing the UI
The system theme is not changing
If Sync with computer or Automatic does nothing, confirm that your operating system or phone is actually switching between light and dark mode. Restart Discord after changing the device theme, then disable and re-enable cross-client synchronization if available.
You changed browser zoom instead of Discord zoom
Discord Web uses the browser’s page zoom, while the desktop app has its own zoom control. Adjust the setting in the client you are currently using.
Desktop and mobile themes render differently
Synchronization can carry a theme choice between clients without making the colors and layout identical. Check the Appearance menu separately on each device.
Normal theme controls are unavailable
Review User Settings → Accessibility, especially when Windows High Contrast or contrast synchronization is active. Also update Discord if the Appearance menu appears incomplete.
A feature is missing
Discord sometimes rolls out appearance features gradually or tests them with selected accounts and servers. A missing custom theme, app icon, or server-theme option may reflect platform, account, or rollout availability rather than an incorrect step.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can you completely redesign Discord?
Not with Discord’s built-in settings. Appearance controls let you change colors, spacing, message presentation, zoom, and text size, but they do not provide unrestricted drag-and-drop control over the server list, DM list, member list, or every mobile navigation element.
You may encounter unofficial modified clients, plugins, injected CSS, BetterDiscord, or Vencord while searching for more extensive changes. These are separate from Discord’s supported settings and can introduce compatibility, privacy, security, account-policy, and maintenance risks. Use Discord’s built-in Appearance and Accessibility controls first, and do not assume that an unofficial modification is safe or permitted.
Quick answer: which Discord setting should you change?
| If you want to… | Change… |
|---|---|
| Make Discord dark | Theme → Dark or Onyx on desktop; Dark or Midnight on mobile, if shown |
| Follow the system theme | Sync with computer or Automatic |
| Fit more content onscreen | UI Density → Compact |
| Remove message icons | Chat Message Display → Compact |
| Enlarge chat text | Chat Font Scaling |
| Enlarge the whole interface | Zoom Level, or browser zoom on Discord Web |
| Add breathing room | UI Density → Spacious or increase Message Group Spacing |
| Use custom colors | Custom Theme, generally requiring Nitro |
| Improve contrast | Accessibility settings and system accessibility controls |
