The complete workflow is: confirm the server knows the map with maps, use changelevel for an immediate switch, edit the mapcycle file for future transitions, and test the rotation with a controlled map change.

These commands are entered in the dedicated server console. If your administration panel provides a console field, enter the same commands there. A command panel may label the field “Server console,” “Console,” or “RCON,” but the command syntax remains the same.
What you need before editing
- Administrative access to the running TF2 server console or an equivalent remote console interface.
- File access to the server’s
tf/cfgdirectory. - The exact map names installed on that server.
- A text editor that can save a plain-text file.
- A backup of the existing
mapcycle.txtso you can restore the previous order.
Map names are identifiers, not display titles. A server may show a friendly title in a browser while requiring an identifier such as cp_dustbowl in a command or configuration file. Confirm the identifier with maps before adding it. This also catches spelling errors and maps that were never installed on the server.

Change the current map immediately
1. Confirm the map name
At the console, run:
maps *
For a narrower result, use a partial name:
maps upward
Use the exact result returned by the server. If the command does not list the map, changing the spelling will not solve the problem; the map must first be installed or made available to that server.
2. Run changelevel
Enter the command with the map identifier:
changelevel cp_dustbowl
The server begins loading cp_dustbowl immediately. Players are moved through the normal loading process, and the current map session ends. Warn players before using this command on a populated server, particularly during a competitive or objective-based round.

3. Confirm the result
Watch the console for the map-load messages and check the server’s current map through your administration interface. If the server reports that the map is unknown, return to maps * or maps <partial name> and compare the returned spelling character for character.
changelevel is an immediate operation. It is the right tool for correcting a bad map, moving to a test map, or starting the first map in a planned rotation; it is not a way to edit the rotation itself.
Find out which maps the server recognizes
The maps command reads the maps available to the running server. Use the broad form when you need an inventory:

maps *
Use a partial search when the list is long:
maps gorge
maps 2fort
maps pl_
Only add a name that appears in the server’s results. Keep the map name exactly as returned, including its prefixes and underscores. Do not copy the visible title from a web page or workshop listing unless it matches the server’s recognized identifier.

This check is useful both before an immediate change and before editing mapcycle.txt. A map can be valid in principle yet unavailable on one particular server because its files have not been installed there.
Set the default map rotation in mapcycle.txt
Open the correct file
Open the TF2 configuration file at:
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt
The path is relative to the game directory used by the dedicated server. In a hosting control panel, use the file manager’s game configuration area; on a self-managed installation, navigate to the server’s tf directory and then cfg. Make a copy of the existing file before changing it.
Enter one map per line
Each line should contain one map identifier without .bsp. For example:
cp_dustbowl
cp_gorge
ctf_2fort
pl_upward
The first line is the first entry in the file, and subsequent lines follow in the listed order as the server advances through its default map sequence. Do not put two names on one line, and do not write full filenames such as cp_dustbowl.bsp.

Choose an order that matches your server
Order is a practical design decision, not merely formatting. A short public rotation might alternate game types; a practice server might keep several versions of the same mode together; a private event server might list only the maps selected for that event. The file should express the sequence you actually want, because the server uses the order you provide.
For a predictable configuration, keep every nonblank line to a single map name and remove accidental spaces or copied punctuation. Save the file as plain text. Do not change the filename to mapcycle.cfg or place it in a neighboring directory: the documented TF2 workflow uses tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt.
Save without changing the identifiers
After saving, reopen the file and check each line against the output of maps. This catches common editing mistakes such as a trailing extension, a misspelled prefix, or a map copied from a different server installation.
Apply and test the new rotation
Mapcycle edits are read for a subsequent map change. Saving the file does not, by itself, restart the current round or visibly change the map. To test the result without waiting for normal play, use changelevel to move to a known map, then observe the next transition generated by your server’s normal map progression.

- Record the map that loads and compare it with the next expected line in your file.
- If the result is wrong, stop and inspect the file path, spelling, and saved contents before changing more settings.
Testing the transition is important because a file can be edited successfully while the wrong file is being read, a map can be listed under a different identifier, or a hosting panel can save changes to a different server instance than the one you are watching.

Use Workshop maps in commands and rotations
Valve’s Team Fortress 2 update note dated June 11, 2015 states that Workshop map names can be used with the map, changelevel, and nextlevel commands, as well as in mapcycle configuration. That means a Workshop map does not require a different rotation-file format: use the identifier recognized by the server as the map name on its own line.
Verify the exact Workshop identifier first:
maps *
Then test it directly before committing it to the rotation:

Replace the angle-bracketed text with the exact name returned by the server; do not leave the brackets in the command. If the identifier is not returned by maps, the server is not ready to load that map, regardless of whether the map exists in a Workshop listing. Resolve availability first, then add the verified name to mapcycle.txt.
Workshop support does not remove the need to test. A map may be available on one server but absent from another, and a copied display title may not be the identifier accepted by the console.

“Unknown map” or the server refuses changelevel
- Run
maps <partial name>and copy the identifier exactly. - Check that you did not append
.bsp. - Check prefixes such as
cp_,ctf_, andpl_. - Confirm that the map files are installed on this server instance, not merely on your local computer or another server.
Once the name appears in the server’s map list, retry changelevel with that exact spelling.

The edited rotation appears to do nothing
- Confirm the file is exactly
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt. - Make sure the edit was saved to the server, not only to a downloaded local copy.
- Check that the file contains one map per line and no
.bspsuffixes. - Verify that you are observing the same server instance whose files you edited.
- Force a controlled map change and observe the following transition instead of judging the result during the current round.
A map is skipped or the order looks wrong
Compare the live file with the expected sequence line by line. Remove duplicate entries unless you intentionally want a map to appear more than once. Check that every line is a recognized identifier. If a Workshop entry was copied from a browser page, replace it with the exact identifier returned by maps.
The server changes maps at an inconvenient time
changelevel ends the current map immediately, so reserve it for deliberate interventions. For routine play, edit the rotation and let the server reach its normal transition. If your administration software exposes a separate next-map control, follow that software’s documentation; Valve specifically documents Workshop-name support for nextlevel, but the control’s presentation varies by server tool.
Players see a different sequence from the file
First establish which mapcycle file the running instance is using. Multi-instance servers, test servers, and managed panels can have separate game directories. Then verify the active server’s map list and inspect the saved file through that same instance’s file manager or console workflow. Changing a file belonging to another installation cannot affect the server players are using.
Self-hosted and managed-server workflows
The commands and file format are the same, but the work around them differs depending on who maintains the server.

Choose the self-hosted route when you need direct control and are comfortable maintaining the files. A managed route can reduce infrastructure work, but it does not eliminate the need to use valid map identifiers or test the resulting rotation.
Operational practices that prevent map-rotation problems
- Keep a known-good backup. Save the previous
mapcycle.txtbefore every substantial change. - Change one variable at a time. If you add several maps, verify them individually with
mapsso one missing map does not obscure the diagnosis. - Use a short test rotation first. A temporary file with two or three verified entries makes the next transition easy to observe.
- Record exact identifiers. Maintain a private list copied from the server’s
mapsoutput rather than relying on display names. - Warn players before immediate changes. A direct
changelevelinterrupts the current map, so announce the move when the server is populated. - Check the active instance. On machines hosting multiple TF2 servers, confirm that the console and file path belong to the intended instance.
Practical examples
Move to a stock map for an event
maps dustbowl
changelevel cp_dustbowl
The first command confirms the identifier; the second performs the immediate switch.
Create a four-map public rotation
cp_dustbowl
cp_gorge
ctf_2fort
pl_upward
Save those lines in tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, verify each name with maps, and watch the next transition to confirm the order.
Test a Workshop map before adding it
maps *
changelevel <workshop-map-name>
If the test succeeds, place the same verified identifier on its own line in mapcycle.txt. If it does not appear in the map list, resolve installation or availability before editing the rotation.
