Yes. WordPress Multisite can serve each subsite from a different public domain, and WordPress 4.5 and later include native domain mapping. The WordPress setting is only one part of the implementation: every domain must resolve to the server, the web server or hosting panel must route each hostname to the same WordPress installation, and every hostname must have valid HTTPS coverage.

What “different domains” means in Multisite
A Multisite network has one WordPress installation and several subsites. Each subsite normally receives either a hostname or a path generated from the network’s primary address. Domain mapping replaces that generated address with a separate public domain while the sites continue to share the same WordPress codebase and network administration.
For example, a network can contain a game-news site at news.example.net, a reviews site at reviews.example.net, and a separate mapped domain at arcade-example.com. The mapped domain is still a subsite in the same network; it is not a second WordPress installation.

WordPress Developer Resources describes domain mapping as a native feature in WordPress 4.5 and later. A mapped URL saved in WordPress does not, by itself, make the domain work. The request has to pass through three layers:
- DNS: the public domain resolves to the server that hosts the network.
- Web server or hosting panel: the hostname is accepted and routed to the WordPress document root.
- WordPress: Network Admin associates that hostname with the intended subsite and generates links, redirects and canonical URLs accordingly.
HTTPS is a fourth operational requirement. Each mapped hostname needs a certificate that covers it, and the certificate must be installed where that hostname is served.

Choose the network URL model first
Multisite can be created as a domain-based network or a path-based network. A mapped top-level domain can be attached to a subsite in either model, but the underlying routing and migration work differ.

The choice is made when the network is configured and should reflect how you will publish and administer sites, not merely the first domain you want to map. Domain-based networks generally require more deliberate hostname routing from the beginning. Path-based networks can be simpler when most sites remain under one domain, but a mapped domain still introduces the same external infrastructure obligations.
Questions to answer before choosing
- Does every subsite need its own public domain, or would a path such as
example.com/teambe sufficient? - Can your hosting account or server configuration route several domains to one WordPress document root?
- Can DNS records and certificate renewals be automated for all current and future domains?
- Will users sign in across hostnames, or should each site behave as a more independent property?
- How will you reproduce the routing in a staging environment and during a migration?
Prerequisites before you activate or map anything
Prepare the infrastructure first. Mapping a domain in the dashboard before DNS and server routing are ready commonly produces a site that redirects to the wrong host, shows the wrong certificate or returns a server error.

- A correctly installed WordPress Multisite network with its rewrites working.
- A documented primary network URL and the network’s current domain/path model.
- Control of DNS for every domain you intend to map.
- A server or hosting panel that can route every hostname to the same WordPress installation directory.
- HTTPS certificates for the primary domain and each mapped domain.
- Administrative access to Network Admin as a super administrator.
- A plan for backups, certificate renewal, redirects, caching and testing on every hostname.
WordPress Developer Resources specifically advises mapping the domains to your DNS server before using them and configuring both DNS and the server to point at the WordPress installation directory. Changing only the site URL in WordPress is therefore insufficient.

For each domain, create the DNS record required by your DNS provider so the name resolves to the server hosting the network. Depending on the provider and architecture, that may be an address record, an alias or another supported hostname target. The important result is that a request for the mapped domain reaches the same server that serves WordPress.
Domain-based networks and wildcard DNS
A domain-based network commonly uses wildcard DNS for generated subdomains, or explicit records for each hostname. Wildcards can reduce repetitive DNS work for subsites under one parent domain, but they do not replace records and routing for unrelated top-level domains. A separately branded domain still needs its own DNS configuration.
Allow for DNS propagation and verification
Verify resolution from outside your local network before changing WordPress. Check the exact hostname, not just the parent domain, and confirm that it resolves to the intended server. If a domain resolves elsewhere, WordPress cannot correct that mismatch; the request never reaches the installation.
Configure web-server or hosting-panel routing
DNS only delivers the request to an IP address. The web server must also recognize the hostname and send it to the Multisite document root. In a managed panel this may be called an add-on domain, alias, parked domain or additional virtual host. On a server you control, it is a virtual-host configuration.

Ensure that every mapped hostname uses the same WordPress files and that the Multisite rewrite rules are enabled. Do not create a second document root containing a separate WordPress copy unless you intentionally want a separate installation. The mapped site is expected to be selected by WordPress after the request arrives at the shared installation.
Routing checks
- The hostname appears in the server or hosting-panel domain list.
- The hostname points to the same document root as the network’s primary domain.
- HTTP requests are handled by the same rewrite configuration used by the network.
- HTTPS requests reach the same application after TLS negotiation.
- Any proxy or cache in front of the server preserves the original host header and does not force every domain to the primary hostname.
Install HTTPS certificates, including SNI coverage
Install a valid certificate for the primary network domain and for every mapped domain. If several domains share one server, use certificates and server configuration that cover multiple hostnames as appropriate. The official guidance calls out SNI for serving multiple domains while keeping administration encrypted.
Test both the certificate and the redirect policy for each hostname. A certificate for example.com does not automatically cover an unrelated mapped domain, and a wildcard certificate for one parent domain does not cover a different parent domain. Renewals must be monitored for every certificate rather than only the primary site.
Map a subsite in Network Admin
Once DNS, routing and HTTPS are in place, assign the public domain to the subsite.

- Open Network Admin → Sites.
- Locate the subsite you want to map and choose its edit action.
- In the site address field, replace the generated hostname or path with the complete mapped URL, such as
https://arcade-example.com. - Save the site settings.
- Open the mapped address in a new browser session and confirm that it loads the intended subsite rather than the network’s primary site.
Use the complete HTTPS URL that users should see. The saved value becomes the basis for front-end links, redirects and canonical URLs, so a scheme or hostname mistake can affect the entire site.

Test host-specific behavior before launch
Do not stop after seeing the home page. A Multisite request can appear successful while links, cookies or API routes still point at the old address. Test each mapped hostname independently, including an incognito session that has no existing WordPress cookies.
Front-end and navigation
- Open the home page, a representative post, an archive and a 404 URL.
- Follow menus, pagination, search results and internal links. They should remain on the mapped hostname where appropriate.
- Inspect image, stylesheet, script and downloadable-media URLs for accidental references to the primary network domain.
- Submit forms and confirm that redirects return to the mapped host.
Administration and authentication
- Open the login screen on the mapped domain and sign in.
- Confirm that the dashboard, logout link and password-reset flow use the intended host.
- Test a user who has access to only that subsite as well as a network administrator.
- Check behavior after closing and reopening the browser so you test cookie persistence, not just one active session.
APIs, caching and canonicalization
- Exercise the site’s REST/API endpoints and any editor functions that make background requests.
- Check canonical tags, feeds, sitemaps and robots directives for the mapped domain.
- Purge and rebuild caches after the mapping. Verify that the cache varies by hostname so one subsite’s HTML is not served on another domain.
- Test HTTP-to-HTTPS and old-host redirects, ensuring they do not create loops or send visitors to the network’s primary URL.
Fix common failures systematically

When login cookies fail
Cookies are especially sensitive when a network uses several hostnames. A cookie created for one host is not automatically available to an unrelated domain. First verify DNS, HTTPS, redirects and the mapped URL; cookie changes should not be used to hide an infrastructure error.
For deployments that genuinely require host-specific cookie handling, the official WordPress guidance documents this troubleshooting setting:

Because it derives the cookie domain from the incoming host, an incorrect proxy or host header can create confusing authentication behavior. After launch, treat DNS, certificates, routing and WordPress configuration as one change-management system. A domain can remain registered and resolve correctly while its certificate expires or its hosting-panel route is removed.

Renewals and monitoring
- Track certificate expiry for the primary domain and every mapped hostname.
- Monitor DNS changes and confirm that records still point to the intended server after hosting or provider changes.
- Check representative pages, login and API requests on each domain after WordPress, server, proxy or cache changes.
Backups and recovery
Back up the Multisite database and files together with a written inventory of network domains, subsite mappings and routing configuration. A database backup without the server’s hostname configuration may restore the content but leave domains unreachable.
Moving or staging the network
Moving a Multisite installation is more complicated than moving a single site because the original network domain, mapped domains, DNS records, certificates and server routes all interact. Plan the order of operations: reproduce routing, prepare certificates, migrate files and database, verify mappings, then change DNS or redirects. Keep the original network domain and routing configuration documented until every subsite has been tested on the destination.

For ordinary mapping of a subsite to a different public domain, current WordPress core is sufficient in WordPress 4.5 and later. A plugin may add alias or microsite-oriented features, but it does not remove the need for DNS, web-server routing or certificates.
The WordPress.org Domain Mapping System listing describes multiple-domain and Multisite support and requires a custom sunrise.php integration. Treat that kind of plugin as an optional or legacy/advanced workflow. Before adopting it, verify compatibility with the current WordPress version, the server’s rewrite and PHP setup, proxy or cache behavior, and login-cookie configuration. Introducing a plugin solely to perform basic native mapping can add another failure point.
A practical decision framework
Use the following choices to determine the least complex design that meets your publishing needs:
