Minecraft’s built-in mob-spawning gamerule is an on/off switch, not a slider for choosing a custom spawn rate. In Bedrock, use /gamerule domobspawning false to disable spawning or /gamerule domobspawning true to re-enable it. In Java, the command name depends on the game version: newer versions use /gamerule minecraft:spawn_mobs false or true, while older versions use /gamerule doMobSpawning false or true.
Disable or enable mob spawning with a command
Run the command in chat, replacing false with true when you want to turn spawning back on. These commands change the gamerule for the world; they do not set a custom percentage or frequency.

Microsoft documents Bedrock’s domobspawning rule as a Boolean that controls whether mobs spawn into the game: Bedrock gamerule reference. Mojang documented the Java rename from doMobSpawning to minecraft:spawn_mobs in its 25w44a snapshot notes.
If a command is rejected
- Check whether the command matches your edition and version. In Java, use command autocomplete after typing
/gameruleto see the names accepted by your game. - You need permission to use commands in the world. In a hosted world or server, that depends on its settings and your role; ask the owner or administrator if you cannot run the command.
What the gamerule changes—and what it does not
The gamerule toggles the spawning covered by that rule. It does not provide a numeric control such as “spawn 50% fewer mobs,” nor does it let you choose a new spawn rate for one mob type. Turning it off is therefore a broad change, not a fine adjustment. It also does not mean that every mob already present will be removed; the rule concerns spawning.

Java servers: use the game rule, not an outdated property
Server instructions can be version-sensitive. Mojang’s Java 1.21.11 release notes say the former spawn-monsters server property was removed in favor of a game rule. Use the gamerule appropriate to the server’s installed version rather than relying on older guides that instruct you to change that property. The same release notes state that mobs no longer spawn during chunk generation when minecraft:spawn_mobs is false: Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes.
For finer control, use custom spawn rules
Bedrock: data-driven spawn rules
Bedrock creators can customize conditions through data-driven spawning, typically by editing behavior-pack content. Microsoft’s documentation covers conditions and controls such as difficulty, distance, brightness, height, herd size, delay, and population-density limits. Spawn rules also assign entities to population-control pools with limits. This is a creator configuration workflow, not a general in-game rate slider, and exact setup can depend on the platform and tools used. See Microsoft’s Data-Driven Spawn Rules and spawn component reference.

Java 26.3: a world-generation setting, not a live rate dial
Java 26.3 release notes describe minecraft:gameplay/creature_world_gen_spawn_probability, with a documented default of 0.1. This is the probability of an iteration for creature-category mobs during world generation in dimensions and biomes; it is not a general control for how frequently mobs spawn in an already-running world. The notes also describe minecraft:gameplay/natural_mob_spawns as an environment attribute for mob spawns. See the Java Edition 26.3 release notes.
