You can change the brightness of a PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s light bar, but the PS4 does not provide a setting for choosing a custom color. To adjust brightness, go to Settings > Devices > Controllers > Brightness of DUALSHOCK 4 Light Bar and choose a level.
How to adjust the PS4 controller light-bar brightness
- From the PS4 function screen, open Settings.
- Select Devices, then Controllers.
- Open Brightness of DUALSHOCK 4 Light Bar and choose a level. Sony’s documented options are Bright, Medium and Dim.
This setting changes how bright the light bar appears, not its hue. Labels may vary with the console’s language or system software. Sony also says the light bar cannot be completely switched off.
Why the light bar changes color
Player assignment
The controller’s assigned color depends on the order in which users press the PS button: the first controller is blue, followed by red, green and pink. This is player identification, not a menu for picking a preferred color. See Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 instruction manual.
Game behavior
Supported games can control the light bar’s color and brightness to communicate gameplay information. For example, PlayStation described uses such as identifying players and signaling events like damage. These changes are controlled by the game, not by a general PS4 color-picker setting. PlayStation’s PS4 FAQ explains that developers can adjust the light bar but cannot switch it off completely.

What if the controller is connected to another device?
When a DUALSHOCK 4 is connected over Bluetooth to most non-Xperia devices, Sony lists changing the light-bar color as unsupported. That limitation concerns use away from the PS4; it does not add a color-selection option to the console. See PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 pairing guidance.
