To connect to a Minecraft LAN world, make sure everyone is using the same edition and a compatible game version, and that all devices are on the same local network. The host must open the world to multiplayer; then guests join from the edition-specific menu: Play > Worlds in Bedrock or Multiplayer in Java.
Before you connect
- Match editions: Java players join Java worlds, and Bedrock players join Bedrock worlds. Java and Bedrock players cannot join each other’s hosted games. Check Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements and troubleshooting for current compatibility guidance.
- Use compatible versions: Make sure the host and guests are running compatible current releases.
- Join the same local network: Each device must be connected to the same local network, and the host must start the world.
Join a Bedrock LAN world
Host: make the world visible
- Select Play, then edit the world you want to host.
- Open the Multiplayer tab. Turn on Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Select Play to start the world.
Guest: join the world
- Select Play, then open Worlds.
- Select the host’s world marked LAN.
Minecraft’s Bedrock LAN instructions describe this flow for supported devices on the same network. On consoles, an online-multiplayer subscription may also be required; check the current requirements for your platform rather than assuming a local connection avoids them. Minecraft lists premium online subscriptions among its console multiplayer requirements.
If you and the host are online Minecraft friends, Bedrock may offer a direct friend-join option instead of showing a LAN entry. That lets you play together, but it uses the internet rather than the local network.
Join a Java LAN world
Host: open the world to LAN
- Open Singleplayer, then select an existing world or create one.
- Press Esc to open the in-game menu and select Open to LAN.
- Adjust the LAN settings if needed, then select Start LAN World. Minecraft reports that the world has been hosted on a port.
Guest: find the hosted world
- Select Multiplayer from the title screen.
- Join the LAN game displayed in the server list.

If the LAN world does not appear
- Confirm the host started it. The host must have the world open to LAN, and every player must be on the same local network.
- Verify edition and version. Confirm that host and guests use the same edition and compatible game versions.
- Check Bedrock visibility. The host should confirm that Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players are enabled. In the guest’s Worlds screen, check that LAN entries are not hidden.
- Review permissions and platform rules. Account multiplayer permissions, particularly for child accounts, or a console’s online-multiplayer requirements can prevent joining. Minecraft’s multiplayer troubleshooting guide provides further account and platform guidance.
If these checks do not resolve it, the next steps depend on the devices, operating systems, and router configuration involved. Minecraft’s general guidance recommends a strong, stable connection; an Ethernet connection is an optional improvement for compatible devices, not a requirement or a fix for mismatched editions, hidden worlds, or permission settings.
