To change stations in GTA 5, tap the radio control while you are in a vehicle to cycle through stations. Hold the same control to open the radio wheel, then select a station directly. The commonly documented default is Q on PC keyboard and mouse, or left on the D-pad on PlayStation and Xbox controllers. The two ways to switch stations
GTA 5 gives you two practical radio controls when you are driving or riding in a vehicle. The same input performs two different actions depending on how long you press it:
- Tap the radio control: the game moves to the next available station in the current radio wheel.
- Hold the radio control: the full radio wheel appears, allowing you to choose a station without cycling through every option.
A tap is quickest when the station you want is close to the current one. Holding the control is better when your target is farther around the wheel or when you want to see the available choices before selecting one. Changing stations is a built-in game action. You do not need an accessory, a separate music service, or an additional purchase.

The radio wheel is available in Story Mode and GTA Online, although Online lets you customize which stations appear on the wheel. You must normally be driving or riding in a vehicle for the standard control to work. If an input does nothing on foot, that is not necessarily a control failure.

The Q and left-D-pad assignments are the commonly documented defaults. They are not a promise that every keyboard layout, controller profile, or remapped scheme will use those buttons. A different active input device can also change the prompts you see. Treat the table as the starting point, then verify the live binding in the Controls settings if your game displays another prompt.
How to change stations on PC
Cycle one station at a time
- Enter a vehicle in GTA 5. The radio control is intended for vehicle play, not ordinary on-foot movement.
- Tap Q once. The game switches to the next station available in your current radio wheel.
- Keep tapping Q until the station you want is selected.
Use short, separate taps rather than holding the key accidentally. A tap advances through the list; a hold changes the interface to the wheel. If you press Q and see the wheel instead of changing immediately, release it and try a briefer press.

If you are a passenger, the vehicle still has to be in a context where the game permits radio interaction; a location-specific issue can produce different behavior.
Open the radio wheel and select directly
- While driving or riding, press and hold Q.
- When the radio wheel appears, move the mouse toward the station you want.
- Use the scroll wheel if that is the input your current PC layout presents for selecting or moving around the wheel.
- Release the control after highlighting the station. The game returns to driving with that station active.
The wheel is the faster method when your target station is far from the currently selected one. It also shows which stations are currently available, including any GTA Online favorites you have configured. If the wheel opens but the highlight does not move, make sure the game is reading the mouse rather than a connected controller and test the alternate selection input shown by your layout.
How to change stations with a PlayStation or Xbox controller
Cycle with the D-pad
- Get into a vehicle.
- Press left on the D-pad once to advance to the next station.
- Press left again as needed until the desired station plays.
Do not substitute the left analog stick for the D-pad when testing the default. The commonly documented radio input is the left direction on the D-pad. A remapped profile may use another button, so follow the on-screen binding if it differs.

Choose from the wheel
- Press and hold left on the D-pad.
- When the wheel opens, move the right stick toward the station you want.
- Release the D-pad input after highlighting the station and return to the vehicle view.
This default description covers the commonly documented PlayStation and Xbox controller layout. If your console shows a different button prompt, use the binding shown in the game rather than forcing the default input. The exact menu labels can also vary after updates or when a different control scheme is selected.

Tap versus hold: which method should you use?

There is no separate purchase or service associated with either method. The difference is only the duration of the same radio-control input and the selection device used after the wheel appears.
What to do when the radio wheel does not open
Control prompts can differ because of remapping or because the game is currently reading a different input device. Check the active assignment before treating the behavior as a fault.
- Pause the game.
- Open Settings.
- Open Controls.
- Review the vehicle or radio-wheel binding and note the button currently assigned to radio control.
- Return to the vehicle and tap that assigned input once, then hold it to test the wheel.
Rockstar makes the settings controls available from the Pause Menu in both Story Mode and Online. A keyboard-and-mouse player who has a controller connected can see behavior change when the game switches its active input method, so confirm which device is currently providing the prompts. If the binding was changed previously, restore or reassign it before testing again.
Test the input in a normal road vehicle after changing the setting. This removes distractions from menus, interiors, scripted scenes, or unusual passenger situations. If the wheel works there, the control itself is probably fine and the original context was the cause.
Using Radio Station Favorites in GTA Online
GTA Online has a Radio Station Favorites option that lets you decide which stations populate the radio wheel. The feature was added in update 1.54 as part of the July 20, 2021 Los Santos Tuners update. It is useful when you regularly use only a few stations and do not want to cycle through the full list.

Open the Interaction Menu
- In GTA Online, open the Interaction Menu with the platform’s default command:
- PC: hold M.
- PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5: hold the Touchpad.
- Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S: hold the View button.
- Find the option named Radio Station Favorites.
- Use that option to mark the stations you want available.
- Close the menu, enter a vehicle, and hold the radio control to view the reduced wheel.
Menu organization can change as Rockstar revises GTA Online, so look for the option by its exact name in the Interaction Menu rather than relying on a fixed submenu position. The platform commands above are Rockstar’s documented defaults for opening that menu; a remapped Interaction Menu control may differ.
Favorites affect the stations presented on the wheel; they do not replace the normal tap-to-cycle or hold-to-open controls. A station that seems to have disappeared may simply be unselected. Reopen Radio Station Favorites, add it, and then close and reopen the wheel in a vehicle.
When favorites appear to behave incorrectly
Rockstar later documented a fix for a radio-wheel display problem that could occur when passengers used Station Favorites. If a passenger sees an incomplete or incorrect wheel, update the game and reopen the wheel after the vehicle is moving. The feature can also look different when you switch between game modes or vehicles, so confirm that you are in GTA Online and that the selected favorites are still present in the Interaction Menu.

Do not assume that every station or every radio feature is available in every platform and mode. The favorites option is specifically an Online customization, while the normal radio controls apply to the vehicle context in both major modes.
How to use your own music with Self Radio on PC
If by changing radio stations you mean playing your own tracks, GTA 5 has a separate PC feature called Self Radio. It is not a console feature and it does not stream music from an online service. You provide supported local files, then let the game scan them.
Prepare supported files
- Use non-DRM MP3, WMA, or M4A files.
- Place the files in
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. - Instead of copying files, you may put shortcuts in that folder that point to folders containing your music.
Non-DRM matters because the game must be able to read the audio file directly. A shortcut is useful if your library is stored elsewhere, but the shortcut must point to a folder the game can access. This documented folder workflow is for PC; there is no equivalent instruction here for adding personal files on PlayStation or Xbox.

Scan the folder and select a playback mode
- Start GTA 5 on PC.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings > Audio.
- Use the Self Radio scan control so the game checks the User Music folder and its shortcuts.
- Choose the Self Radio mode that matches how you want the tracks handled.

The modes differ in track order, skipping behavior, advertisements, and DJ banter. After scanning, select Self Radio from the normal radio wheel; it appears alongside the game’s built-in stations on PC. If you later add or remove files, run the scan again so the game refreshes its library.

Vehicle controls are the reliable baseline. A property interior can behave differently from a normal road vehicle, and Rockstar’s February 2026 update notes include a fix for players who could not switch stations or turn off the radio while inside properties.
If the radio input fails in a property:
- Confirm the game has installed its latest update.
- Leave the property and enter a vehicle outside.
- Test the normal tap and hold behavior there.
- Check Pause Menu > Settings > Controls if the vehicle test also fails.
- Return to the property only after confirming that the control works in a standard vehicle.
This separates a location-specific problem from a remapped control. Do not assume that a failed property interaction means the radio control has been permanently removed.
Troubleshooting checklist
Q or left D-pad does nothing
- Make sure you are in a vehicle rather than on foot.
- Check the current input method and the assigned control in Pause Menu > Settings > Controls.
- Try a short tap first; holding the input is intended to open the wheel, not simply advance one station.
- If you are on PC with a controller connected, verify whether the game is showing keyboard or controller prompts.
- Test a standard vehicle outside a property or special interior.
The wheel opens, but the station will not select
- On PC, move the mouse or use the scroll wheel as indicated by your active layout.
- On a controller, move the right stick toward the desired station.
- Release the radio input after highlighting the station instead of continuing to hold it indefinitely.
- Test with the full wheel before applying favorites, so you know whether the issue is selection or the reduced station list.
A station is missing in GTA Online
- Open the Interaction Menu.
- Check Radio Station Favorites.
- Add the missing station if you want it in the wheel.
- Close and reopen the wheel in a vehicle.
Favorites intentionally limit the wheel, so a station that is not selected there may not appear even though the game still includes it.
Self Radio shows no tracks
- Confirm the files are MP3, WMA, or M4A.
- Remove DRM-protected files.
- Check the exact folder:
Documents/Rockstar Games/GTA V/User Music. - If you used shortcuts, verify that they point to folders containing the audio files.
- Run the scan again from Pause Menu > Settings > Audio.
- Remember that this workflow is for PC; it does not configure personal music on PlayStation or Xbox.
