To change server-wide rules in Conan Exiles, edit ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. Start the server once to generate the configuration, stop it completely, make a backup, change the value in the appropriate section, save the file, and restart the server. Editing while the process is running can be undone when Conan Exiles writes its in-memory settings during shutdown.

ServerSettings.ini is the main file for server-wide Conan Exiles rules. Guides commonly group its options into areas such as PvP and PvE rules, performance behaviour, and clan configuration, but the names and arrangement of individual variables are not guaranteed to remain identical after an update.
This file is different from a player’s local game settings. A value in ServerSettings.ini applies to the dedicated server and therefore affects connected players. It also differs from launch parameters and operating-system service settings, which control how the server starts rather than the gameplay rules stored in this file.

Do not create a hand-written file before the server has run. The first successful launch creates the configuration files and gives you the exact section names and syntax for that build.
Find the file on a Windows installation
The standard location is:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini
For example, if the server was installed in C:ConanServer, the full path would be:
C:ConanServerConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.ini

The installation root is not universal. SteamCMD, a game-server control panel, and a manually chosen directory can all place ConanSandbox somewhere different, so search from the directory that contains the server executable instead of assuming the example drive or folder.
Prepare before making a change
A few checks prevent the most common causes of lost settings and unbootable configurations.

- Confirm that you are changing the dedicated server’s files, not a client installation used to play the game.
- Record the current server version and the setting you intend to change. This makes it easier to identify an update-related change later.
- Tell players when the server will be unavailable. A restart is required for a normal configuration change.
- Have sufficient permissions to stop and start the service and to write to the configuration directory.
- Make a dated copy of
ServerSettings.inibefore editing. Keep the original untouched until the new configuration has been tested.
If the file does not exist, launch the server once and allow it to finish creating its saved configuration. Stop it normally, then look again in the WindowsServer directory.
Change a setting step by step on Windows
- Generate the configuration. Start the dedicated server and wait long enough for it to create its saved files. You do not need to join the game for this step.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server’s normal stop control or the service manager you use to run it. Do not edit while the process is still active.
- Open the configuration directory. Go to
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerbeneath the installation root and locateServerSettings.ini. - Back up the file. Copy it to a separate folder or rename the copy with the date and the server version. A backup lets you restore the last known-good state without reconstructing every value.
- Open the original in a plain-text editor. Avoid word processors that may add formatting. Keep the existing section headers, spelling, punctuation, and value style intact.
- Locate the correct section. The generated file shows where each variable belongs. Search within that file for the setting name instead of relying on a screenshot or an older article.
- Change only the value. Leave the variable name and section header unchanged. If the option is already present, edit its value on that line. Make one related change at a time when troubleshooting.
- Add a missing option only when necessary. If the generated file has no line for a setting documented for your build, add it under that setting’s own section and copy the syntax used by nearby entries. If you cannot determine the section or value format, do not guess; check the current file or the documentation for the same server version.
- Save the file. Close the editor only after confirming that the filename is still
ServerSettings.ini, not a second extension such as.txt. - Restart the server. Start it through the same method you normally use. Wait for the server to finish loading before asking players to test the change.
- Verify in-game. Test with the smallest practical case, and check the server log or administrator interface for startup errors. Keep the backup until the result is confirmed.
Change settings on Linux-hosted servers
Conan Exiles does not provide a native Linux dedicated-server build. Linux installations run the Windows server build through a compatibility layer such as Wine; common setups also use a systemd service and xvfb-run. For that reason, the configuration directory normally retains the Windows-oriented name:

ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini
One example installation places the server under /home/server, but the real path depends on the service account and the directory selected during installation. Treat that location as an example, not a universal command.
- Use the service’s normal stop operation and confirm that the server process has exited.
- Find the installation root referenced by the Wine or systemd service definition.
- Open the
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServerdirectory beneath that root. - Copy
ServerSettings.inito a dated backup outside the live configuration directory. - Edit the live file with a text editor, preserving its sections and existing value syntax.
- Start the same systemd, Wine, or wrapper service you used before editing, then test the setting.
A 2026 hosting guide described a separate LinuxServer directory, but that layout is not confirmed by the official Conan Exiles Linux setup guidance and conflicts with the commonly documented WindowsServer path. Check the directories actually present on your installation before creating or moving any file. Do not assume that renaming the folder will make the server read it.
Use a managed-host control panel when one is provided
Managed hosts can expose Conan Exiles settings through a text editor, an environment-specific configuration page, or an administrator panel. Their filesystem layout and restart behaviour may differ from a self-hosted installation.

- Use the panel’s stop control before opening its file manager or configuration editor.
- Export or download a backup if the panel offers that function. If it does not, use its file manager to copy the existing file before changing it.
- Change the option in the panel’s editor, or follow the host’s documented path to the generated
ServerSettings.ini. - Save the change through the panel, then use the panel’s restart control rather than starting a second server process manually.
- Reconnect only after the panel reports that the server is running, and verify the rule in-game.
If a panel regenerates configuration files during a restart, direct edits made over an unrelated file-transfer or shell session may be replaced by the panel’s stored values. In that situation, the panel’s configuration screen is the authoritative place to make the change. Ask the host which values it persists if an edit disappears.
Read the generated file instead of copying an old list
Conan Exiles updates can add, remove, rename, or relocate variables. A guide written for another build may show an option that your server no longer recognizes, or may place a valid option under the wrong section. The safest workflow is therefore:
- Search the file created by your own server for the option.
- Use the surrounding entries to determine the section and formatting style.
- Change an existing line before attempting to add a new one.
- When an option is absent, verify that it applies to your server version and add it only under the documented section.
- Restart and test one change before stacking several unrelated edits.
Settings guides often discuss PvP/PvE rules, performance tuning, and clan behaviour. Those labels describe the kind of decision you are making; they do not guarantee that your file uses the same variable spelling as the guide. Keep a change log with the exact line you altered and the result you observed.

The dedicated server keeps settings in memory while it runs and can write them back to disk when it shuts down. If you save a file while the process is active, the shutdown write can replace your change with the older in-memory value. This is why the reliable order is stop, back up, edit, save, and restart.

A hot-reload command was mentioned by one source but is not verified across Conan Exiles server builds. Unless you have tested that command on your exact build and can confirm the result, do not rely on hot reload; perform a normal restart instead.
Troubleshoot a setting that is missing or ignored

Self-hosted and managed servers: which workflow fits?

Verify and document the change
After the restart, verify the setting from the perspective of a player affected by it, not only from the text file. Some changes are visible immediately, while others require a new session, a new character, or a particular gameplay event before their effect is obvious. Record the date, server version, exact variable, old value, new value, and test result.
Keep at least one known-good backup for each server update. When upgrading Conan Exiles, compare the newly generated configuration with your saved copy rather than blindly replacing the new file. Reapply only the settings you still need, because an old file can contain variables or syntax that the updated server no longer expects.
