If your Old School RuneScape (OSRS) items, levels, or character suddenly look missing, do not assume they were deleted. First check your inventory and bank, then verify that you opened Old School RuneScape on the intended account and login method. RuneScape and Old School RuneScape use separate profiles, and signing into a different account can make a familiar character appear to have vanished.
If the account itself is inaccessible, use Jagex’s official recovery process. If an item was genuinely lost in OSRS, set expectations before submitting anything: Jagex says it does not offer a general lost-item service, except for narrowly defined incidents such as a verified exploit, a Jagex error, or a Group Ironman storage malfunction.

Start with the fastest checks
- Open the correct game. Confirm that the client or launcher says Old School RuneScape, not RuneScape.
- Check both obvious locations. Search your inventory and every relevant bank tab. Look for items that may have been moved, equipped, noted, or deposited in a different tab.
- Ask Diango. Diango can return some recoverable items, including certain Old School holiday items. This is an in-game retrieval option, not a promise that every lost item is recoverable.
- Stop and verify the account if the character looks unfamiliar. An unexpected name, level, location, quest state, or bank usually indicates a different account or login route rather than erased progress.
Jagex’s lost-items guidance also excludes several categories from return, including items recoverable from Diango, unique quest items, certain pets, temporary holiday-event items, and items that grant experience. Check those possibilities before opening a support request.

Identify which problem you actually have
The next step depends on whether you can log in, whether the correct game profile is open, and whether there are signs that somebody else accessed the account.

Make sure RuneScape and Old School RuneScape are not being confused
A single Jagex account can provide access to both games, but the profiles remain independent. Jagex states in its RuneScape and Old School explanation that character information, statistics, items, and progress do not move between the games. An account with a high-level RuneScape character can therefore open an entirely new OSRS character with no shared bank or skills.
This is a common reason a returning player thinks progress disappeared. If you remember a character from years ago, first identify which game it belonged to. Select Old School RuneScape from the launcher, then check the character’s name, starting location, skills, quests, and bank. Do not treat a fresh OSRS character as evidence that your RuneScape progress was deleted; the games are separate by design.
Check the exact account and login method
Use the login credential, not the display name
Your in-game display name is not necessarily the credential that identifies the account. Use the account login name or login email when trying to recover access. Jagex’s recovery guidance distinguishes accounts created before November 2010 from those created after that date: older accounts generally use a login name, while later accounts use a login email. Entering a character’s current display name in a password-reset form can therefore lead to the wrong result.

If the account was created or linked through a third-party provider, use that provider’s original sign-in option instead of typing an email into a different route. Jagex lists Apple, Facebook, Google, Steam, and other linked methods among the possibilities. An account can appear empty when you sign in with a normal email address even though the OSRS character is attached to a third-party login.

Check which account has priority
If the same email address is associated with a RuneScape account and a Jagex Account, Jagex says the Jagex Account takes priority at login. If you do not remember the login identifier, use the email-reminder and third-party routes described in the wrong-account support article rather than repeatedly guessing credentials.
Recover access when you cannot sign in
Use Jagex’s account recovery appeal when a password reset cannot reach the registered email, an authenticator cannot be removed, or someone changed the account email. The form asks for a new email address to register and for as much account-creation and account-history information as you can provide.
- Start from the official recovery form, not a forum, social-media message, or a third-party “recovery” service.
- Enter the login name or login email associated with the account. Do not substitute the in-game display name.
- Provide the new email address where Jagex can contact you.
- Answer the ownership questions with the oldest and most accurate information available, including account-creation details and historical payment information.
- Submit the appeal once, then monitor the new email address for the result.
Jagex says an outcome email should arrive within 24 hours. That is a published process timeframe, not a guarantee that access will be restored or that missing items will be returned. Send recovery information only through the official form; never post passwords, payment details, recovery answers, or account identifiers in comments or public channels.

If an account-recovery appeal is denied
Read Jagex’s account-recovery-denied guidance before trying again. Jagex recommends submitting from the device and location normally used to play, avoiding VPNs and proxies, and supplying the earliest passwords and historic payment details you can remember. These details help establish that you are the original creator.

Jagex states that the original account creator remains the owner, even if another person later played on a bought or shared account. Playing on an account, knowing its current password, or having paid for someone else’s account does not transfer ownership under that recovery standard.
What to do if “No accounts could be found” appears
If the login information is correct but recovery still says no account exists, treat the result as a possible hijacking signal. Jagex says an attacker may have imported the account into a Jagex Account, changing how the original login is found. Follow the instructions in its unable-to-submit-an-account-recovery article and contact Support immediately.
Do not keep creating new accounts with the same address in the hope that one will reveal the old character. Preserve the exact error message, the login route you used, and the date and time of the attempt for the official support form, but do not publish those details publicly.
Secure the account before you return to the game
If items, settings, or linked accounts changed without your permission, secure every layer before playing again. Jagex’s security tips recommend the following:

- Upgrade to a Jagex Account where applicable.
- Use a unique, strong password that is not reused on email or other services. A password manager can help manage unique passwords.
- Enable an authenticator. It can block a login even when somebody knows the password.
- Secure the associated email account with its own unique password and multi-factor protection.
- Review linked third-party logins and remove any you do not recognize.
- End other active sessions if the account controls provide that option.
- Set an Old School RuneScape Bank PIN.
- Check the device for malware or unauthorized software before entering new credentials.
Email security is especially important: Jagex warns that someone who controls the email may be able to disable an authenticator or take over recovery messages. Changing only the game password is not enough if the email or a linked provider remains compromised.

For ordinary OSRS losses, Jagex’s position is explicit: “Please be aware that we are currently unable to offer a general lost item service for Old School.” In practice, that means support is not a routine restoration desk for deaths, drops, scams, mistakes, or losses caused by account hijacking.

- An error made by Jagex staff.
- A Group Ironman storage malfunction.
Jagex says it generally identifies affected players through its own processes. If a large number of players are eligible for compensation, it will publish a news post describing the incident and the make-good plan. An isolated report that merely feels unusual is not evidence that one of these exceptions applies.

Do not use RuneScape’s separate claim process for OSRS
The other game, RuneScape, has a different page that discusses rare returns after widespread service disruptions or confirmed bugs and mentions a 48-hour claim window. That process is not an Old School RuneScape promise. Do not submit an OSRS loss expecting the RuneScape-only form to restore it.
When a support request is appropriate
Contact Jagex when you cannot recover the account, believe a hijacker changed the login structure, or have evidence that your loss matches an officially verified incident. Include a clear chronology and the account-recovery information requested by the relevant form. Keep the request focused on one account and one incident.
For a normal missing-item situation, complete the in-game checks first. If the character and account are correct, the item is not recoverable through Diango, and no verified incident applies, Jagex’s published policy means restoration should not be expected. Account recovery can return control of an account; it is not a general item-restoration process.

- Missing character or levels? Confirm Old School RuneScape is open, then test the correct login name, email, or original third-party button.
- Cannot access the account? Submit the official recovery appeal and wait for its outcome email, normally expected within 24 hours.
- Recovery denied? Retry with the usual device and location, no VPN or proxy, and the oldest account and payment details available.
- “No accounts could be found” despite correct credentials? Treat it as possible account import or hijacking and contact Jagex Support.

- Any sign of unauthorized access? Secure email, Jagex Account, linked providers, device, authenticator, and Bank PIN before continuing.
