Where to find camera settings
Rockstar says GTAV settings can be changed from the Pause Menu in either Story Mode or Online. Open the menu, select Settings, and check the relevant camera or controls section. The precise menu names can differ by platform and release. Rockstar Support’s settings instructions were last updated April 20, 2024.

How to switch between first and third person
Use the camera-mode control for your platform to toggle views. The official Xbox One game help describes switching into and out of first-person mode with the controller’s camera-mode control, but the available material does not establish one button mapping for every platform, controller, or edition. Check Settings > Controls in your game for the current binding rather than relying on a universal button instruction.

First person shows the scene from the character’s perspective. Third person keeps the character visible. Neither is universally better: choose based on which view feels comfortable and gives you the visibility you want in the activity you are playing. First-person mode is documented in the later console/PC-era release described by the official game help; do not assume every historical edition has the same feature set.

First-person settings and what they change
The Xbox One help lists these options under Settings > Controls. Treat the names below as Xbox One help terminology; other platforms or editions may use different labels or expose different options.
- On-foot field of view: Widens or narrows the view while on foot. Adjust it to taste rather than assuming one setting suits everyone.
- First-person head bobbing: Turning this off removes the bobbing effect while running or jogging, which may feel steadier to some players.
- First-person ragdoll: Can make the view switch temporarily to third person during a ragdoll event.
- First-person combat roll: Can switch the view temporarily to third person during a combat roll.
- First-person cover in third person: Allows the camera to switch to third person while taking cover.
These are preference and comfort choices. If an action changes your view unexpectedly, check the related setting and decide whether you want the game to switch perspectives during that behavior.

Set independent camera defaults for on foot and vehicles
In the Xbox One help, Allow Independent Camera Modes appears under Settings > Display. Enabling it lets you set first person or third person as the default view independently, instead of sharing one default between on-foot and vehicle play. The help describes this as the way to set the default camera view for each mode. Menu availability and wording may differ in other versions.
Why a GTA Online job may lock your camera
If your preferred view is unavailable during a particular creator-made race, the activity may be enforcing a camera mode. Rockstar’s GTA Online Race Creator Guide documents a Force Camera View option that can lock players to first or third person. The host can override the setting before the race begins. This restriction applies to the job, not necessarily your general camera settings.
