Change the server’s CastleDecayRateModifier value in its JSON settings. The default is 1.0; setting it to 0 disables castle decay. Stop the server before saving the edit, restart it afterward, and verify the result in-game.

What the castle-decay setting does
Castle decay determines how quickly a castle deteriorates after its stored Blood Essence has run out. The modifier scales that decay speed: values below 1 slow the process, while values above 1 accelerate it. It does not refill Blood Essence or protect a castle whose upkeep is still empty; it changes what happens after the supply is exhausted.

There are no published laboratory timings for the modifier, so a value such as 0.5 should be understood as a slower multiplier rather than a promise that a castle will last a precisely measured number of hours. Actual in-game results can also depend on the server build and its other settings.

Find the setting in the correct file
Secondary guides disagree about the file location. The most likely location for a gameplay rule is ServerGameSettings.json, where loot, castle, PvP and resource-rate rules are normally grouped. One configuration guide places CastleDecayRateModifier inside the CastleStatModifiers_Global object, beside entries such as CastleLimit and CastleBloodEssenceDrainModifier. A Steam community example instead shows the key at the top level, next to BuildCostModifier and CraftRateModifier.

Other hosting guides put the key in ServerHostSettings.json. That file generally contains infrastructure options such as the player limit, port, save name, administrator list and security mode, which is why ServerGameSettings.json is the more plausible home for a gameplay modifier. However, the key name and layout have not been officially confirmed against every current server build.
- Open the settings file your server actually loads.
- Search for
CastleDecay, rather than assuming a fixed nesting level. - If the key is not present in
ServerGameSettings.json, inspectServerHostSettings.jsonas well. - Follow the structure already used by the file. Do not create a second copy of the key in two files unless your host explicitly documents that arrangement.
If your installation uses a generated configuration or a control panel, the panel may write the file for you. In that case, use the panel’s castle-decay field when it exists and treat the generated JSON as the resulting configuration, not as a separate source of truth.
Before editing: protect the save and stop the server
Make a copy of the relevant JSON file before changing it. A backup gives you a way to restore the previous configuration if the server refuses to start or a preset regenerates the file.

- Announce maintenance to players and close the game server cleanly.
- Use the host’s stop control or stop the dedicated-server process completely. Do not edit while the process is still running, because it may rewrite the old values on shutdown.
- Back up
ServerGameSettings.jsonand, if you checked it during the search,ServerHostSettings.json. - Open the file in a plain-text editor that preserves JSON punctuation and UTF-8 text.
Change the modifier on a self-hosted server
The exact folder varies by operating system, installation method and server manager. The important part is to edit the active save’s JSON file, not a template or an old backup.
- With the server stopped, open the active settings directory.
- Open
ServerGameSettings.jsonand search forCastleDecayRateModifier. - Change only the number. For example, a no-decay configuration uses
"CastleDecayRateModifier": 0; a slower configuration could use0.5. - Keep the key in the same object where it already appears. If your file places it under
CastleStatModifiers_Global, leave it there. If your build shows it at the top level, preserve that layout. - Save the file and check that commas, braces and quotation marks remain balanced. A trailing comma or a missing brace can make the settings unreadable.
- Start the server again and wait for it to finish loading before joining.
- Confirm the practical result in-game rather than relying only on the file contents.
If the key is absent, do not blindly paste it into an arbitrary location. Check the other settings file, inspect the surrounding syntax, and compare the file with the configuration format generated by your server manager. A malformed or misplaced entry may be ignored or prevent startup.
Change it through a hosting control panel
Many game-server hosts publish a dedicated castle-decay control or provide a text editor in their panel. The labels and navigation differ, but the safe sequence is consistent:

- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the server-game settings editor, configuration files area or the provider’s castle-decay page.
- Set the modifier to the desired number, or edit the generated JSON if no dedicated field is available.
- Save or apply the change.
- Start the server and test the result in the game.
A panel can regenerate JSON when you change a preset, restart, or apply another configuration form. If a manual edit disappears, make the change in the panel’s own field or custom-preset editor instead of repeatedly editing the generated file.
Presets can overwrite a manual value
One hosting guide reports that a difficulty preset can override hand-edited settings and recommends switching to a custom preset before saving the castle-decay value. That behavior is not corroborated by a second source, so treat it as a possibility rather than a universal rule.
If your value keeps reverting:
- Check whether the panel is applying a named difficulty preset on every save or restart.
- Select a custom or editable preset if the panel offers one, then save the modifier again.
- After restarting, reopen the active JSON and confirm that the number is still present.
- Check both settings files if the host has moved or duplicated the key.
Verify that the new rate is active
The server must be restarted after the file is saved. A running instance normally continues using the configuration it loaded at startup, so changing the file alone is not sufficient.

After joining the restarted server, inspect a castle whose Blood Essence upkeep can be observed safely. Verify that the server is using the intended save and that the castle’s decay behavior changes only after its Blood Essence has run out. Do not expect an immediate visual change while Blood Essence remains available.

For a zero setting, the intended result is that the castle does not enter the normal decay process after its Blood Essence is depleted. For a value below or above one, allow enough game time for the difference to become observable; no authoritative source publishes a universal time-to-collapse for each multiplier.

The server will not start after the edit
Stop the process, restore the backup, and start the server to confirm that the configuration change caused the failure. Then reapply only the numeric value, checking every comma, brace and quotation mark. Avoid adding duplicate keys while testing.

The setting is present but decay has not changed
- Confirm that you stopped and restarted the server after saving.
- Make sure you edited the active save’s file rather than a template or unused instance.
- Search both
ServerGameSettings.jsonandServerHostSettings.jsonbecause guides disagree about placement. - Check whether a panel or difficulty preset rewrote the file during startup.
- Remember that decay begins after Blood Essence is exhausted; a stocked castle will not show the effect immediately.
The key keeps disappearing
A control panel, preset, update process or server manager may regenerate the file. Use the provider’s dedicated setting or custom-preset workflow when available, then verify the generated JSON after each restart.
Different players report different results
First confirm that everyone is connected to the same server instance and save. Then check the active configuration after the latest restart. A copied local file does not prove that the live server loaded that file.
Choosing a rate for your server
Choose based on how often players are expected to return and whether abandoned bases should be removed between wipes. A private or infrequently visited server may use a low value or zero to avoid losing builds during long absences. A competitive server that wants inactive territory cleared can choose a value above one. The ranges below reflect community recommendations, not official balancing guidance.

Use these as trial settings and observe your own community’s response. Since published measurements are unavailable, avoid promising players an exact number of hours before a castle collapses.
What is and is not officially established
The key name, default multiplier and zero-value behavior are consistently reported by secondary configuration guides, but the current official server documentation was not available for confirmation. The disputed file location and nesting level therefore deserve extra care, especially after a game update or a hosting-panel migration.
