There are two reliable ways to change a Minecraft server’s difficulty. Run /difficulty peaceful, /difficulty easy, /difficulty normal, or /difficulty hard for an immediate change while the server is running. To make the setting persistent, edit the server’s server.properties file so it contains the desired difficulty= value, then restart the server. On versions that support it, /reload can apply the file change without a full restart.

Choose the right method
The command is best when you need to change the active world immediately. Editing server.properties is better when the setting must survive a restart or be part of the server’s normal configuration.

Use the names peaceful, easy, normal, and hard. These are the modern values. Older guides often show the numbers 0, 1, 2, and 3; do not substitute those numbers when a current server expects names.
Before changing the setting
- Confirm which server software and Minecraft version you are running. Command permissions, reload behavior, and configuration keys can change between releases.
- Make sure you are changing the configuration for the world your players actually use. A hosting panel can expose several server instances or world folders.
- Keep a copy of
server.propertiesbefore editing it. This gives you a known-good version if a panel or text editor changes another line. - Tell connected players that the change can alter the danger level immediately, especially when moving from peaceful to a hostile-mob difficulty.
Change difficulty with the command
From in-game chat
- Join the server with an account that has operator privileges.
- Open the chat window.
- Enter one of these commands exactly, including the leading slash:
/difficulty peaceful/difficulty easy/difficulty normal/difficulty hard
- Press Enter and wait for the server’s confirmation. The new difficulty applies to the running world immediately.
A guide used for current server commands places this command at operator permission level 2. In practice, an account must be an operator or have an equivalent permission granted by the permissions system. A player without that permission will see a denial instead of changing the setting.

From the server console
- Open the console supplied by your host or start the server’s local console.
- Enter the command without the slash, for example
difficulty hard. - Submit the line and check the console response.
The console is useful when nobody with operator status can join the game. It also avoids chat-command permission problems, although the console still needs to be connected to the correct server instance.
What the command changes
The command changes the active world state; it does not edit the text in server.properties. That distinction matters after a restart: if the file still contains another value, the server can load that value again. For a one-time event, such as temporarily making a survival session peaceful, the command may be all you need. For a permanent policy, update the file as well.
Change difficulty in server.properties
Find and open the file
Stop the server before editing whenever possible. A running server or control panel can rewrite the file when it shuts down, potentially discarding an unsaved change. In a hosting panel, look for a file manager or configuration editor; on a self-hosted installation, open the server.properties file in the server’s main directory.

Make a backup, then search for the line beginning with difficulty=. The documented default is:
difficulty=easySet the desired value
Replace only the value after the equals sign. For example, to use hard difficulty, the complete line should be:
difficulty=hardOther valid modern examples are difficulty=peaceful, difficulty=easy, and difficulty=normal. Use lowercase names, do not add quotation marks, and do not create a second difficulty line. If duplicate lines exist, remove the extra one so there is a single unambiguous setting.

Save and apply the file
- Save the file without changing unrelated settings.
- Start the server again, or perform a full restart if it was already running.
- Watch the startup console for errors and connect to the world to confirm that the intended setting is active.
The Minecraft Wiki’s server-properties reference says a restart is required for file changes and also documents /reload as an alternative on versions where that command applies the change without a full restart. Because reload behavior is version-dependent, a restart is the safer choice when players can tolerate brief downtime.
Understanding persistence and restart behavior
A command and a configuration edit can temporarily disagree. For example, if you run /difficulty hard while the file still says difficulty=normal, players experience hard difficulty immediately, but a later restart can load normal again. Conversely, editing the file while the server is running does not necessarily alter the current world until the server reads the file at startup or through a supported reload.
For a lasting change, make the file value match the command you want players to experience. If you only need a temporary change, use the command and leave the stored configuration untouched, but document that choice for anyone who restarts the server.

The command and property value select the difficulty level; they do not change the game mode of individual players. A player’s survival, creative, adventure, or spectator mode is controlled separately.

The server says you do not have permission
- Check that you are an operator on this particular server, not another instance.
- If the server uses a permissions plugin or proxy, verify that your account has the permission associated with the command.
- Run the command from the server console instead. Console input uses
difficulty hard, without/.
The command is rejected as invalid
- Use one of the four names exactly:
peaceful,easy,normal, orhard. - Do not rely on the numeric format from an old tutorial. Some legacy tools convert 0, 1, 2, and 3 to names, but that behavior is not a safe assumption for a current server.
- Check that you are using the command syntax for your server version and that a proxy is not intercepting the command.
The change works, then disappears after a restart
Compare the active command change with the saved file. If server.properties still contains the previous value, edit that line, save it, and restart again. Also make sure the panel is editing the file belonging to the server you restarted; multi-server accounts commonly expose more than one configuration directory.
The edited file appears to be ignored
- Confirm the line is spelled
difficulty=and has a valid name after the equals sign. - Remove a duplicate line and preserve the rest of the file’s syntax.
- Stop the server before saving if the panel warns that it will overwrite live configuration.
- Perform a full restart rather than relying on reload if your version does not apply server-property changes through
/reload.
A difficulty lock is mentioned
Documentation is inconsistent about a key called difficulty-locked=true. One hosting knowledge base describes it as disabling in-game /difficulty; another error guide says the lock does not prevent the command and describes the lock as a per-world flag in level.dat, rather than a server.properties key. The official behavior is not established consistently across versions.

If a command is denied even though your operator permissions are correct, inspect the target version’s documentation and test on a backup world. Do not add or remove a lock setting blindly: first verify whether that release recognizes the key and where it stores the lock. Console access may help distinguish a permission failure from a world-lock response, but it does not override a version-specific lock implementation automatically.
Legacy numbers and modern server versions
Older tutorials commonly map difficulty as 0 = peaceful, 1 = easy, 2 = normal, and 3 = hard. Current documentation uses the names instead. A hosting guide notes that a legacy number may be converted to its name by some server tooling, but conversion is not a guarantee that the underlying Minecraft release accepts numeric input everywhere. When editing server.properties or issuing the command yourself, use the names and treat numeric values as legacy-only syntax.

If a migrated server contains a numeric value, make a backup, replace it with the corresponding name, restart, and check the startup output. This avoids depending on a conversion step that could differ between server versions or panels.
A safe change procedure for administrators
- Record the current Minecraft and server-software versions.
- Decide whether the change is temporary (command only) or permanent (command plus
server.properties). - Back up the world and the configuration file.
- Warn players if the change affects an active survival session.
- For an immediate change, use the in-game command as an operator or enter the equivalent command in the console.
- For persistence, stop the server, set one valid
difficulty=line, save, and restart. - Confirm that the server you edited is the server you restarted and that no lock or permission rule blocked the command.
- Record the final value in your server notes so the next administrator does not accidentally restore an older setting.
Bottom line
Use /difficulty peaceful, easy, normal, or hard when you need an immediate change. Edit server.properties when the setting must persist, then restart (or use a version-supported /reload). If the command fails, check operator permission, console syntax, the exact value names, the file being edited, and any version-specific difficulty lock before changing anything else.
