To change an Abiotic Factor dedicated-server password, stop the server, replace the password in your host panel or launch command, save the change, and start the server again. A running process normally continues using its old startup settings, so changing a field without restarting may not affect new connections.
Use the instructions below for a rented control panel or a Windows self-hosted installation. Panel names and server support can change, and no official Deep Field Games or Steam setup guide was available for these procedures; the steps reflect current third-party host documentation and a community configuration guide.

Before you change the password
Tell connected players that the server will be unavailable during the restart and give them the new password through a private channel. Do not put the password in a public server name, screenshot, stream overlay, or forum post. Keep the join password different from any administrator credential.
- Have access to the hosting panel or the machine that launches the server.
- Confirm the exact server instance you are editing if the account contains more than one.
- Record the current server name, port, query port, and administrator settings before changing anything.
- Plan a short maintenance window so players do not mistake a restart for an outage.
Change the password on a rented server
Most game-hosting panels use the same sequence: stop the instance completely, edit the password setting, save it, and start the instance. A restart button that only reloads a dashboard is not enough; wait until the panel reports that the process has stopped.

Standard control-panel procedure
- Open the server in your host’s control panel.
- Choose Stop and wait for the process and console to show that it is offline.
- Open the settings page named in the host-specific table below.
- Enable the password option if the panel presents it as a switch, then enter the new value exactly as intended.
- Save or apply the setting. If the panel has a separate command-line save action, use that as well.
- Start the server and wait until it finishes loading and appears online.
- Test from a client that is not already authenticated, using the new password.

Nodecraft
Stop the server fully, open Game Settings on the dashboard, select the Basic tab, and edit Server Password. Save the setting and start the server again. If the old password still works, verify that you edited the correct instance and that the stop operation completed before the save.
BisectHosting
Stop the server, open the Startup tab, turn on the Server Password option, and enter the new password. Apply the change, start the server, and test with a fresh client connection. The switch matters: entering text while the option is disabled may leave the server without a password.

Stop the instance, open Server Settings, select the Server tab, and replace the password. Save before starting the server. If the panel regenerates a startup command, allow that operation to finish before launching.

Kinetic Hosting
Stop the server, edit the Server Password field under Settings, save, and start it again. Kinetic’s documentation says that leaving this field blank disables the password, making the server public. That behavior is not universal across hosts, so do not assume a blank field has the same result elsewhere.
Host Havoc
Open Command Line Manager, edit the predefined command line that contains the password field, and save the command line before restarting. Check the resulting command for accidental deletion of other arguments such as the game port, query port, or administrator password.
Change the password on a self-hosted Windows server
For a self-hosted dedicated server, the password is supplied as a launch argument. Add or replace -ServerPassword= in the command that starts the executable, then close the running server and launch it again. The community configuration guidance currently describes the dedicated server as Windows-only and places it under Tools in the Steam library; verify those details if you are setting up a new installation because platform support can change.

Find the command that starts the server
- Locate the shortcut, batch file, PowerShell script, scheduled task, or service that launches
AbioticFactorServer-Win64-Shipping.exe. - Make a backup copy before editing it. A shortcut’s Target field and a batch file’s command line are common locations.
- Search the full command for an existing
-ServerPassword=argument. Replace only the value after the equals sign; if it is absent, add the argument with the other server options. - Save the file using the same account and location that normally starts the server.
Example launch command
The following is a complete example drawn from configuration guidance. Replace the sample values with your own and keep the arguments separated by spaces:

If your password contains characters that your shell treats specially, test the launch method with a temporary value and use the quoting rules for that particular shortcut or script. Avoid placing the command in a publicly readable paste or repository because it contains credentials.
Restart and verify the self-hosted process
- Use the server’s normal shutdown method and wait for the process to exit. Terminating the window abruptly can risk a world-save issue.
- Start the server from the edited shortcut or script, not from an older shortcut that still contains the previous password.
- Watch the console for a normal startup and confirm that the expected
-SteamServerName, game port, and query port are still present. - Join from a separate client. An existing session may not prompt again, so disconnect completely or test from another account.
- If the new password fails, stop the process and inspect the actual launch command used by the running task; Windows may be starting a service or scheduled task different from the file you edited.
Keep the administrator password separate
-AdminPassword is optional and should not be reused as the player join password. The available guidance recommends keeping these credentials separate. If you omit -AdminPassword, administrators are added by SteamID in Admin.ini rather than by a shared administrator password. This is single-source guidance, so confirm the current administration method in the server build you are running before removing an existing admin setting.

How players join after the change
Players can search for the server using the value supplied to -SteamServerName in the server browser, or connect by IP when the host exposes that method. When a password is configured, they must enter the new value at the join prompt. Send the password privately and include the exact capitalization and punctuation.

- The server’s current display name, so they select the right result.
- The new password, copied exactly rather than retyped from memory.
- Whether they should use the browser listing or a direct IP connection.
- When the restart finished, since joining during startup can produce misleading connection errors.
Troubleshoot a password that does not work
The old password still works
- Confirm the server was stopped before editing and actually restarted afterward.
- Check for duplicate server installations or multiple instances using different startup files.
- On a host panel, verify that the setting was saved on the intended server and not merely changed in an unsaved form.
- On Windows, inspect the process or service command line to make sure it includes the edited
-ServerPassword=value.
The new password is rejected
- Copy it again, preserving uppercase letters, spaces, and punctuation.
- Make sure the client is connecting to the intended server name, IP, and port; a similarly named public server can produce a valid-looking but wrong prompt.
- Stop and start the server once more after confirming the saved value.
- Test with a second client or player account to rule out a cached session.
The server appears public
Check whether the panel has a separate enable switch. BisectHosting documents a distinct Server Password option, and Kinetic Hosting states that a blank field disables protection. Other guides do not establish consistent blank-field behavior, so treat an empty value as host-dependent rather than assuming it will require a password.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup command or previous panel value to determine whether the password edit introduced a syntax error.
- Check for a missing space between arguments or an accidentally removed hyphen.
- Verify that the executable path, game port, query port, and quotation marks around
-SteamServerNameremain intact. - Review the host console or Windows service log for the first startup error, not only the final generic failure message.
A console command is suggested online
One hosting blog lists an in-game password newpassword command, but it is not confirmed by official documentation or the other setup guides. Do not rely on that command for a production server. Change the startup setting or control-panel field instead, then restart.

Security and operational practices
Use a strong, shareable join password
Choose a password that is not reused for email, hosting, Steam, or administrator access. A long passphrase is easier for a trusted group to type than a short predictable word. Because players need to enter it, avoid characters that are routinely altered by chat software, but do not reduce it to a guessable name or date.
Limit who can edit the setting
Give control-panel access only to people who need server administration. On a self-hosted machine, restrict write access to the shortcut, script, or service definition that contains the credential. Remove old copies of command files from shared folders and backups that ordinary players can read.
Rotate after a leak
If the password appears in a public chat, stream, log, screenshot, or mod-support ticket, treat it as compromised. Stop the server, generate a replacement, save it in the proper panel or command, restart, and distribute the new value privately. Rotate the administrator credential separately if it was exposed as well.
What is confirmed and what may change
The host-specific paths above come from third-party provider guides rather than an official Deep Field Games or Steam manual. Dashboard labels, launch syntax, and platform availability are volatile; recheck the current panel and server build before relying on an old screenshot or saved command. The community wiki’s Windows-only note is specifically subject to change.
There is also conflicting third-party advice about an empty password field: Kinetic Hosting says blank disables the password, while another guide describes players needing a password to join. Use the behavior documented by your own host and verify it with a test account. No reliable evidence establishes a universal in-game password-change command or a remote configuration method beyond a host panel or direct file/command access.
