To apply a different difficulty, stop the server, back up your files, choose a new worldname, save the configuration, and restart. The server then generates a fresh world at the selected difficulty. Mobile servers are documented by the community Terraria Wiki as using values one higher than the desktop table, but that platform-specific offset should be verified against your server build.

The server setting that controls difficulty
Terraria stores the difficulty choice in the text configuration used when a dedicated server creates a world. The relevant line is:
difficulty=numberUse one of the documented values below. These are world-generation values, not a live switch that rewrites an existing world.

The server reads this key while creating the world. If a world with the selected worldname already exists, the server loads that world rather than generating it again, so changing only difficulty= appears to do nothing.
Before editing the configuration
Changing a server’s difficulty is a text-file edit followed by a restart. You do not need a paid utility or a special item. Prepare the following:

- Access to the server’s installation directory or its control panel file manager.
- A plain-text editor that will not add rich-text formatting.
- A complete backup of
serverconfig.txtand every world file, especially the relevant.wldfile. - A maintenance window in which all players can be disconnected safely.
Stop the server process before editing. A running process may overwrite the file on shutdown, and players could continue changing the world while you are preparing a replacement. Keep the original configuration and world backup in a separate folder so that you can restore them if the new world is not the one you intended to create.
Change difficulty while creating a new world
This is the supported, repeatable method described by community server guides. It deliberately creates a new world, so choose a world name that does not point to an existing file.

- Stop the server. Use the normal stop command in your control panel or close the dedicated-server process cleanly. Confirm that it is no longer running before opening the file.
- Open the active configuration. Find
serverconfig.txtin the dedicated server directory or in the panel’s file manager. If several copies exist, use the one referenced by the startup command; editing an unused copy has no effect. - Make a backup. Copy the configuration and the current world files before changing anything. Give the backup a date or another identifier so you can distinguish it from the live files.
- Enable automatic world creation. Set
autocreate=1. Without automatic creation, the server will generally continue loading a specified existing world instead of using the difficulty value to generate one. - Enter the desired difficulty. Set
difficulty=0,difficulty=1,difficulty=2, ordifficulty=3according to the table above. - Choose a new world name. Set
worldname=to a name that does not already have a corresponding world file. Changing this name is what forces a fresh world rather than reopening the old one. - Save as plain text. Preserve the file name
serverconfig.txt, keep the existing key spelling, and do not add a second extension such as.txt.txt. Leave unrelated server options unchanged. - Restart the server. Start it with the same configuration file you edited. The process should report that it is creating a world; the exact wording depends on the server build and management panel.
- Verify the result. Check the startup log for the new world name and a world-creation event, then join and confirm that the expected mode is shown. If the old world opens, stop the server and work through the troubleshooting section instead of deleting files.
A minimal configuration excerpt looks like this:
autocreate=1
difficulty=2
worldname=MasterWorldIn this example, MasterWorld is generated as Master because the value is 2. The name is only an example; use a unique name appropriate for your server.
Why editing the file does not change an existing world
Community guides consistently report that difficulty is recorded when the world is generated. If the server finds an existing .wld for the configured name, it loads that file and does not rebuild its world data from the new difficulty= line. This is why changing difficulty=0 to difficulty=2 and restarting can leave players in the same Normal world.

- Back up the existing
.wldand its associated files. - Set
autocreate=1. - Choose the new difficulty value.
- Change
worldname=to a new name. - Restart and confirm in the log that generation occurred.
This preserves the old world as an archive while giving the new setting a clean generation event. Do not delete the old file merely to make the name available; renaming the configuration target is safer because it leaves the backup untouched.

Can an existing world be converted?
One unattributed search result reports that the world editor TEdit has a Game Mode setting that may be used to alter a world file. That method was not independently verified, and it is not the same as changing serverconfig.txt. Treat it as an advanced, unconfirmed option: make multiple backups, work on a copy rather than the live file, and be prepared for version-compatibility problems. The documented server workflow remains generating a new world.
Journey mode and permission settings
Journey is selected with difficulty=3 when the world is generated. Journey also has server permission keys that govern who may use particular Journey controls. For changing difficulty, the relevant key is:

For example, a newly generated Journey world in which every player may use the difficulty control could include:

journeypermission_setdifficulty=2These permissions matter only after the world is a Journey world. Setting journeypermission_setdifficulty does not turn a Normal, Expert, or Master world into Journey mode. Conversely, selecting Journey does not automatically give every player permission to change difficulty; use 0, 1, or 2 deliberately.

A community guide also describes research and item duplication as part of Journey mode rather than controls governed by these permission flags. The flags should therefore be treated as access controls for individual Journey actions, not as a switch for every Journey power.

Mobile servers: apply the documented offset carefully
The community Terraria Wiki documents a platform difference in which mobile servers use a value one higher than the desktop table. Under that documentation, mobile 2 corresponds to Expert, whereas desktop 1 corresponds to Expert. The same rule would make mobile 3 Master.

No primary developer documentation was available to confirm the mobile offset, and the value-4 Journey conclusion is an extrapolation rather than a verified platform instruction. Before generating a mobile world, check the server software’s own documentation or startup behavior and test with a disposable world. Do not assume that a desktop configuration can be copied unchanged to a mobile server.

The old world still loads
- Confirm that
worldname=is genuinely new and does not resolve to an existing.wldfile. - Check that
autocreate=1is present in the configuration actually used at startup. - Stop the server completely before editing and restart it afterward.
- Read the startup log. If it names the old world and does not report generation, the server has not created a replacement.
The setting seems to be ignored
- Check spelling and capitalization: use the key
difficultyexactly, followed by an equals sign and a documented numeric value. - Make sure the editor did not save a rich-text document or a second file extension.
- Verify that the panel’s startup command points to the file you edited. Hosting panels sometimes expose more than one configuration location.
- Use only values supported for the platform and server version. Behavior for values outside the documented range is not established.
The server fails after the edit
Restore the backed-up configuration, start the server with the known-good file, and compare the changed lines one at a time. A minimal test configuration containing only the required autocreate, difficulty, and worldname entries can help isolate a formatting mistake, but preserve all other options in the live file when you return to normal operation.

Players cannot change difficulty in Journey
Inspect journeypermission_setdifficulty. A value of 0 blocks everyone and 1 limits the action to the host; use 2 only when every player should have access. Restart after changing permission settings if the server does not reload its configuration dynamically.

The community wiki’s server history places the Master and Journey values in desktop Terraria version 1.4.0.1. No separate change to these numeric values specific to version 1.4.4 was identified. A server running a different branch, platform implementation, or older build may not interpret the same keys in exactly the same way, so check the version shown by the server at startup.
The configuration method itself is independent of any particular hosting company: the important details are the active serverconfig.txt, the autocreate setting, the world name, and a full restart. Control-panel labels may differ, but they ultimately edit or generate the same server settings.
A safe decision checklist
- Want a new Normal, Expert, Master, or Journey world? Set the documented difficulty value, use
autocreate=1, choose a newworldname, and restart. - Want to keep the current world? Do not expect a
difficulty=edit to convert it. Back it up and generate a separate world instead. - Want Journey players to change difficulty? Generate with
difficulty=3, then setjourneypermission_setdifficultyto0,1, or2. - Running on mobile? Treat the documented plus-one mapping as platform-specific and community-sourced; verify it before using a valuable world.
- Seeing no change? Check the active config path, the world name,
autocreate=1, and the startup log before attempting any world-file modification.
Bottom line
Difficulty is chosen at world creation, not switched onto an existing Terraria world through a server restart. Use the correct numeric value in serverconfig.txt, enable autocreate=1, give the new world a unique name, and verify generation in the log. For an existing world, keep the original backed up and create a new world; treat direct world-file editing as unconfirmed and version-sensitive.
