Change these settings in the server’s server.properties file, then restart the server. Set view-distance to control how many chunks the server sends around each player, and set simulation-distance to control how far away game logic runs. View distance mainly affects memory use and network traffic; simulation distance is usually the heavier CPU and tick-rate cost.

Minecraft divides the world into chunks. These two settings determine what happens to chunks around each player, but they do different jobs.
View distance
view-distance controls how many chunks the server sends to a client around that player. A higher value can make more distant terrain visible, but it also means the server may keep more chunk data available and send more data over the connection. Raising it can therefore increase RAM pressure and bandwidth use, especially when several players explore in different directions.

Simulation distance
simulation-distance controls the radius in which the server runs game logic. Within that area, systems such as mob activity, crop growth, redstone, fluid movement and hopper processing can continue. The extra work is performed on server ticks, so increasing simulation distance commonly affects CPU load and ticks per second (TPS) before it affects a player’s download speed.
A player may be able to see terrain outside the simulation area, but blocks and entities there will not necessarily update until they come within the active simulation range. For that reason, simulation distance is normally set at or below view distance.

Before editing the server
Identify the edition and server software
Java Edition servers normally expose both view-distance and simulation-distance in server.properties. Bedrock Dedicated Server uses different terminology: its render-distance setting controls what clients can see, while a tick-distance setting controls the radius that receives active simulation. Do not copy Java keys into a Bedrock file.
Software distributions and hosting panels can also add their own limits or overwrite configuration during startup. If a panel has a dedicated server-properties editor, use it or confirm that it writes to the same file you edit manually.
Stop the server and make a backup
Stop the server cleanly from its control panel or management service. Editing while the process is running risks having the server rewrite the old values when it shuts down. In a terminal opened in the server directory, a simple backup is:
cp server.properties server.properties.bak
On systems without the cp command, download a copy through the file manager before changing anything. Keep the backup until players have confirmed that the new settings work.

Check available resources
Record current memory use, CPU use and TPS before changing the values. If the server is already struggling, increasing either distance is unlikely to solve the problem. A larger simulation radius can make an existing tick-rate problem substantially worse.
Java Edition: change the settings in server.properties
- Stop the server. Use the panel’s Stop or Shutdown action and wait until the process is fully offline.
- Open the file. In the server’s main directory, open
server.propertieswith the panel editor or a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that adds formatting. - Find the two keys. Search for
view-distance=andsimulation-distance=. If a key is missing, add it on its own line; do not create duplicate entries. - Enter integer chunk values. For example:
view-distance=10
simulation-distance=6
- Save the file. Preserve the spelling, hyphens and one-key-per-line format. Do not put spaces around the equals sign unless your server software specifically documents that format.
- Start the server. Watch the startup console for configuration errors. If the server refuses to start, restore the backup and check for a misspelled key, duplicate key or non-numeric value.
- Verify in game. Join with a test account, travel in several directions and observe chunk loading. Check a farm, redstone circuit or mob area if you changed simulation distance. Compare TPS and CPU use with the measurements taken before the change.
Editing through a hosting control panel
Most panels provide a Files, File Manager or Configuration section. Stop the server first, open server.properties, change the two values, save, and use the panel’s Start action. Some panels expose separate fields for view and simulation distance; those fields should ultimately write the same keys. If a panel regenerates the file, check its startup variables or advanced settings after every restart.
Editing over a remote terminal
If you administer the machine yourself, connect to the server directory, copy the file, and edit it with a text editor. A safe sequence is:
cp server.properties server.properties.bak
nano server.properties
After saving, start the server using the same service or script that normally launches it. The exact service command depends on your operating system and installation, so use your existing management procedure rather than guessing a new one.
Choosing values without creating lag
There is no single best number for every server. Player count, world-generation activity, hardware, loaded farms and the distances between players all matter. Treat the first change as a controlled test rather than a permanent maximum.
Use simulation distance as the CPU budget
If TPS falls, lower simulation-distance first. The cost grows with the area around every player that is actively ticking. Several players spread across separate regions can therefore cost more than the same number gathered in one base. Large automated farms, villager halls, redstone clocks and flowing fluids make a high simulation radius more expensive.

Use view distance as the network and memory budget
If players report blank terrain, slow chunk arrival or disconnections while exploring, reduce view-distance or inspect bandwidth and memory headroom. A higher view distance is most noticeable to players travelling quickly, flying or generating new terrain.
Start conservatively and change one setting at a time
A practical starting pattern is to keep simulation distance lower than view distance, such as a view value of 8 with a simulation value of 5 or 6. These are starting choices, not universal limits. Increase one value by a small amount, restart, and monitor TPS, CPU, memory and network use for several minutes of normal play. If performance declines, return to the previous value before testing the other setting.
| Goal | Adjustment to try | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Players need to see farther terrain | Raise view-distance slightly while leaving simulation distance unchanged |
Chunk-load time, memory and outbound bandwidth |
| Farms or redstone need to remain active farther away | Raise simulation-distance only if CPU and TPS have headroom |
TPS, tick time, CPU utilisation and entity processing |
| Server is already behind on ticks | Lower simulation-distance; lower view distance if exploration also causes pressure |
Whether tick time and farm response recover |
| Players see terrain loading slowly | Lower view-distance or investigate bandwidth and storage |
Network saturation, disk activity and memory exhaustion |
Defaults and valid ranges: what is actually established
Published server guides commonly report a Java default of 10 chunks for both settings, often describing that value as a Paper reference default. Those reports are not a substitute for the documentation for your exact server build. Defaults can be changed by software distributions, control panels or existing configuration files; the value already present in your file is the effective value until you change it.
Range information is inconsistent across secondary guides. A 3–32-chunk range is reported for the Java settings in more than one guide, while another guide lists 4–12 for simulation distance. Because the evidence conflicts and the official version-specific limits were not established here, verify the allowable range in the current documentation for your server software before using an extreme value. If a value is rejected or silently changed after restart, treat the server’s accepted value and its documentation as authoritative.
| Edition or setting | Values reported in available documentation | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Java view and simulation distance | Default 10 is commonly reported; 3–32 is also commonly reported as a range | Use the existing file and current Java server documentation to confirm the default and limits for your build |
| Java simulation distance in one hosting guide | 4–12 reported | Conflicts with the broader 3–32 report; do not assume it applies to every server |
| Bedrock render distance | Microsoft Learn documentation states an allowable range of 4–96 chunks | Confirm the setting name and build-specific behavior in the Bedrock documentation you use |
| Bedrock tick distance | Default 4 and range 4–12 are reported by a single secondary source | Consider this unverified until confirmed for your Bedrock Dedicated Server version |
Some guides claim that simulation distance is clamped to view distance—for example, a simulation value of 10 allegedly becoming 8 when view distance is 8. That behavior is not confirmed consistently. Keeping simulation distance no higher than view distance is sensible, but check the resulting values after restart instead of assuming a clamp occurred.
Bedrock Dedicated Server considerations
Bedrock does not use the Java setting names as a drop-in replacement. Look for the render-distance and tick-distance options in the Bedrock server configuration used by your installation. Render distance determines how much terrain is available to clients; tick distance determines how far active game simulation runs.

- Stop the Bedrock server and back up its configuration file.
- Open the configuration in a plain-text editor or the control panel’s Bedrock settings page.
- Change the render-distance and tick-distance entries supported by your build. Do not paste
simulation-distanceunless your software explicitly documents it. - Save, start the server, and confirm the accepted values in the startup output or configuration after restart.
- Test both distant terrain visibility and a ticking farm. Bedrock’s documented render-distance range is broader than the commonly reported Java range, but hardware and player count still determine a practical value.
Why a change may appear not to work
The server was not restarted
Changing the file does not necessarily reload these settings in a running process. Stop and start the server, then reconnect. If the panel offers only Restart, ensure it performs a full process restart rather than merely reconnecting the console.
You edited the wrong file
Multi-server machines often contain several folders with a file named server.properties. Confirm the path shown by the startup script or panel and check the file’s modification time after saving.
The panel overwrote your edit
Some management systems generate configuration from a template or environment variable. If your value returns to its old number, inspect the panel’s advanced settings and startup variables, change the source value there, and restart again.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe key is duplicated or misspelled
Only one active line for each key should exist. Remove duplicates and use the exact spellings view-distance and simulation-distance for Java. A typo may be ignored, leaving the old value in effect.
The value is outside the accepted range
A server may refuse an out-of-range value, clamp it, or start with a fallback. Check the startup log and reopen the file after startup. Because reported limits differ by edition and software, use the documentation for the precise build rather than relying on a generic chart.
Terrain is visible but machines stop working
This usually indicates that simulation distance, not view distance, is limiting the area that ticks. Raise simulation distance only if TPS and CPU capacity allow it. Also check whether the player is within the simulation radius and whether the farm depends on a player being present.

TPS dropped after increasing distance
Lower simulation distance first, especially on worlds with many entities or automated systems. If the server still struggles during exploration, reduce view distance as well and inspect memory, storage and network utilisation for separate bottlenecks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Testing and maintaining the setting
Use a repeatable test
Make one change, restart, and test the same route or farm under similar player activity. Record the setting, player count, TPS, CPU, memory and any chunk-loading complaints. Reverting quickly is easier when you have a before-and-after record.
Test the busiest locations
A quiet spawn area does not represent a technical base, mob farm or redstone district. Walk through the area that normally produces the most entities and block updates, then ask players in distant regions to explore simultaneously.
Review after updates
Server software updates can alter defaults, accepted ranges or panel templates. Recheck both keys after an update and keep a copy of the working configuration. Do not assume a value accepted by one Java or Bedrock build will be accepted by another.
Can a command change these settings?
Reports about a live in-game command are inconsistent, and the command text was not established reliably. These options are not ordinary gamerules. Use server.properties and a restart as the supported procedure unless the documentation for your exact server software explicitly provides a live configuration command.
