What actually changes when you switch difficulty
Unturned server difficulty is a combination of a selected preset and the gameplay settings loaded for that preset. The documented presets are Easy, Normal, and Hard. Normal is the default. Changing only a selector while leaving the wrong configuration section or file untouched can make the server appear not to change at all.

The safe model is therefore:
- Choose the preset your server build supports.
- Edit the matching gameplay configuration.
- Restart the server so it reads the saved files.
- Confirm the selected file or overrides in the startup output.
Most server options cannot be configured while the server is open. Unturned also has no built-in autosave, so a clean shutdown protects recent progress before you edit anything. Difficulty changes are configuration changes, not a command you should test repeatedly on a live world while players are connected.
What you need before changing the setting
Have administrator access to the machine or hosting panel, the server’s console or log viewer, and a plain-text editor. You should also know the server ID you actually launch. A machine can contain several Unturned installations or several folders under U3DS/Servers/; editing a similarly named folder does nothing for the running process.

- Record whether the server is currently Easy, Normal, or Hard.
- Note the current server ID and installation path.
- Plan a short maintenance window so players are not disconnected without warning.
- Keep a copy of the commands and configuration files before making changes.
- Have the server startup log available for verification after the restart.
Do not change multiple unrelated gameplay values at the same time. If the new difficulty does not load, a small, isolated edit is easier to identify and roll back.
Find the correct server files
For a simple installation, begin in U3DS/Servers/Default/. If you created a different server ID, replace Default with that folder name. The exact path can vary with the installation method, but the server-specific folder is the one containing its commands and gameplay configuration.

Smartly Dressed Games’ current documentation places most server options in a server’s Config.txt, with Servers/Default/Config.txt as its example. Servers created before version 3.25.8.0 may instead contain Config.json. On startup, the server can convert that legacy JSON into a per-difficulty text file such as Servers/ExampleServer/Config_NormalDifficulty.txt.
Do not assume that a file with a familiar name is the active one. The startup log is the authority when several configuration files exist. If your installation has both a general Config.txt and generated difficulty files, identify which one the running build loads before changing values. The path shown in the process launch command or panel settings is more reliable than a shortcut or an old tutorial.
Before you edit: save and stop the server
Never rely on a forced process termination immediately before changing configuration. Use the server console to save, then shut down cleanly.
- Warn connected players that the server is going offline.
- Run the
Savecommand in the server console. - Run
Shutdownand wait for the process to close. The documented shutdown operation safely saves and closes the server. - Confirm that no server process is still writing to the folder before opening the configuration files.
- Make a copy of the relevant configuration file or folder. Keep the original until the new difficulty has loaded successfully.
If you operate through a managed panel, use its stop button rather than editing files while the server status still says running. A panel restart is not a substitute for checking that the previous process has finished shutting down. If the panel offers separate save and stop controls, use both in that order.
Change difficulty on a current installation
1. Identify the selector used by your build
Current documentation describes the Difficulty command as the mechanism for using settings configured in the Easy or Hard files, with Normal as the default. The exact command syntax can differ between server builds and older tutorials. Use the syntax documented for the version you actually run; do not copy a command written for a different configuration format.
On builds that accept the common command form, the line pairs the selector with a preset, such as Difficulty Normal. Treat that as an example of the relationship, not a guarantee that every build accepts identical capitalization or placement. If the server rejects the line, remove it and follow the command syntax shown by that build’s documentation and startup messages. A line that is silently ignored is just as ineffective as a misspelled file path.

2. Set Easy, Normal, or Hard
Choose Easy, Normal, or Hard. If you are moving from Normal to Hard, select Hard and then make sure the Hard configuration is the one you edit. Selecting Hard without changing the matching settings can leave you with defaults or with values inherited from another file. The same rule applies when moving back to Normal or Easy: the selector and the edited settings must point to the same preset.
3. Edit the active text configuration
Open the active Config.txt or generated difficulty-specific text file in a plain-text editor. Change only the settings you intend to change, preserve the existing key/value syntax, and save the file in its original location. Do not add JSON punctuation to a text-format file or text-format lines to a JSON file.
When a level supplies its own value, an empty setting can be overridden by that level. A value explicitly assigned in Config.txt takes priority. If you need to prevent level-based overrides globally, the documented -NoLevelConfigOverrides launch option disables them; use it only when that broad behavior is really wanted. It affects the server globally, so do not add it merely to diagnose one setting unless you understand the wider effect.
4. Start and verify
Launch the server normally. Read the startup output for the selected difficulty and the configuration file it loaded. The -LogGameplayConfig launch option prints gameplay-configuration overrides, which is useful when a value appears to be ignored. Do not invite players back until the log confirms the intended configuration.
If the startup output does not identify the expected preset, stop again rather than trying to correct files while the process is live. Check the selector, the server ID, and the path printed by the launcher. Verification at this point prevents you from testing the wrong world or installation.
Change difficulty on a legacy Config.json installation
Understand the three sections
Legacy Config.json stores Easy, Normal, and Hard settings together. Editing a section that is not active has no effect on the running server. For example, changing values under Hard while the selector still uses Normal will not make a Normal server harder.

Use the section name and the active selector as a pair. If you cannot tell which section is active, make no gameplay change yet; start the server once, read its startup output, and identify the selected difficulty before stopping it again.
Edit safely
- Stop and save the server as described above.
- Open the server’s
Config.jsonin an editor that preserves plain JSON. - Locate the Easy, Normal, or Hard section corresponding to the preset you selected.
- Change the required values without removing quotation marks, braces, or commas.
- Save a backup copy before starting the server.
- Start the server and watch for conversion messages or a newly generated difficulty-specific text file.
The official documentation warns that a missing comma can prevent legacy JSON from loading. If the server reports a parsing error, restore the backup and validate the punctuation before trying again. Once startup conversion creates a text file, use the new format and confirm which file is active instead of continuing to edit an obsolete JSON section.

Do not keep two competing copies as if both were authoritative. After conversion, note the generated filename, archive the old JSON backup separately, and make future changes in the file the server reports as loaded.
Commands.dat: what to check and what not to assume
Many older guides tell administrators to put a difficulty or mode selector in Commands.dat. That advice is not automatically wrong, but the command syntax and file layout depend on the server build. The authoritative current documentation for your build should take precedence over a wiki page written for an earlier release.
- Open
Commands.datonly while the server is stopped. - Use the documented
Difficultycommand and one of the three supported preset names if your build exposes that command. - Keep the selector and the edited configuration aligned. A Hard selector paired with changes made only in the Normal section is a mismatch.
- Restart and verify in the startup log rather than assuming the command was accepted.
If the server starts without an obvious error but the gameplay remains unchanged, first check that the selector was parsed and then check the loaded file. A command that is valid for one release may be ignored or interpreted differently by another. Do not add several alternative selector lines in the hope that one will work; duplicate or conflicting entries make diagnosis harder.
Manual files versus a managed hosting panel
Both approaches perform the same underlying operation, but the trade-offs are different.

There is no universal cheapest choice. Compare the total monthly cost with the value of backups, rollback, support, and reliable restart controls. If a provider advertises one-click difficulty switching, confirm whether it changes a persistent setting or merely edits a generated file that will be replaced at the next boot.
Use a managed hosting panel
A managed Unturned host usually presents the same operation through a web control panel: stop the server, open a file manager or configuration editor, select the difficulty, save, and restart. The panel can be convenient when you do not have direct filesystem access, but it does not remove the need to match the selector and configuration.

- Open the server settings, file manager, or advanced configuration editor.
- Set Easy, Normal, or Hard using the panel’s documented field. If the panel exposes raw files, identify whether it is editing
Config.txt, a generated difficulty file, or legacyConfig.json. - Save the change and create a panel backup if that feature is available.
- Start the server and inspect its console or log viewer for the loaded difficulty and configuration.
- If the panel regenerates files on startup, make the change in the panel’s persistent setting rather than editing a generated file that will be overwritten.
Before choosing a managed service, compare whether it provides file access, controlled restarts, backups and rollback, visible configuration values, responsive support, and a clear total monthly cost. The underlying Unturned procedure is still the same; the panel simply changes how you reach the files and restart controls.
Troubleshoot a difficulty change that did not apply
The wrong section was edited
This is the most common legacy-layout mistake. Config.json contains all three presets, but only the active section is read. Select the intended preset, edit that exact section, restart, and confirm the loaded configuration in the log.

The server was still running
Most options cannot be configured while the server is open. A text editor may report that it saved successfully even though the running process continues using its old values. Shut down with Save and Shutdown, make the edit, and restart.
An old tutorial does not match the installation
Guides written around the JSON layout can be misleading on installations that use Config.txt. Check the server’s actual files and the version boundary at 3.25.8.0. If startup converted JSON into a text file, follow the current file rather than recreating the old structure.
An empty setting is being overridden
An empty value can allow a level to supply its own setting. Assign the value explicitly in the active configuration when you need it to take priority. Use -NoLevelConfigOverrides only if disabling level overrides for the entire server is acceptable.
JSON parsing failed
For a legacy file, inspect commas, quotation marks, braces, and brackets. Restore the last known-good backup if the server refuses to load the file, then reapply one change at a time. Do not use JSON punctuation while editing a text-format configuration.
The panel silently regenerated the file
Some panels recreate generated files during startup. If your change disappears, look for a persistent difficulty field or template editor in the panel and change that source instead. Then restart and verify the resulting file in the log.

The selector appears correct but gameplay is unchanged
Enable -LogGameplayConfig and compare the reported overrides with the file you edited. Check for a second server ID, a duplicate installation, or a different active configuration path. The folder you changed must belong to the process you actually launched.
The server will not start after the edit
Stop the process, restore the backed-up command and configuration files, and start with the last known-good settings. For JSON, check punctuation first. For text files, remove accidental JSON braces or unsupported lines. Once the server starts, make one change and test again.

Keep a dated copy of Commands.dat, Config.txt, any generated difficulty file, and legacy Config.json when present. Record the previous preset before switching. If startup fails, stop the server, restore the last working files, and start again before attempting another change. Because Unturned has no built-in autosave, a configuration backup does not replace regular world saves; it protects the settings and gives you a fast recovery path.

For a busy community server, retain the backup until players have connected and the new preset has been confirmed. Then keep at least one older copy so you can reverse the change without reconstructing the previous values from memory.

How do I verify which configuration Unturned loaded?
