The safest Palworld server backup is a clean, complete copy of the active world folder. Run /Save in game (or through RCON), stop PalServer, then copy PalServer/Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<WorldID>/—including Level.sav, any LevelMeta.sav and WorldOption.sav, and the entire Players/ directory—to storage outside the live save directory. A restore must put one matching snapshot back in place; never combine a newer world file with older player files.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Palworld servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Palworld can also create rolling local copies when bIsUseBackupSaveData is enabled, but those copies remain on the server unless you download or copy them elsewhere. The procedure below covers Windows, Linux, Docker or panel-managed servers, world transfers, verification, and the failure signs that mean you should stop the server again.

Where Palworld keeps a dedicated-server save
Palworld identifies a dedicated world by a folder beneath Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Replace <WorldID> with the folder name used by your server. The active folder directly contains the world files and a Players/ subdirectory.
| Platform or deployment | Common location | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Windows dedicated server | steamappscommonPalServerPalSavedSaveGames <WorldID> |
The folder contains Level.sav and Players. |
| Linux dedicated server | steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/<WorldID>/ |
The folder contains Level.sav and Players/. |
| Docker or a hosting panel | The host path mapped to Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/ |
Use the panel file browser or volume mapping, then locate the folder containing both items. |
The Windows and Linux locations above are the usual Steam or SteamCMD layouts documented for Palworld dedicated servers. A container, control panel, or customized installation can expose a different host path, so do not assume the installation directory is the same as the path visible inside the service. The presence of both Level.sav and Players/ is the practical check that you found a complete world folder rather than a parent directory or an unrelated save.

Make a clean manual backup
A save can be changing while the server writes it. Creating a copy during that write can leave world and player data from different moments. Use this sequence whenever you want a dependable restore point.
- Save the world. While connected as an administrator, run
/Save. You can issue the same command through RCON if you manage the server remotely. - Stop the server cleanly. Shut down
PalServerafter the save completes. Do not copy the live folder while the process is still writing. - Identify the active WorldID. Open
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/and select the world folder that contains the currentLevel.savandPlayers/. - Copy the whole folder. Copy the complete
<WorldID>directory, not just one file. Include every file at that level and the entirePlayers/directory. - Write the copy outside the live tree. Put it on a separate backup disk, another machine, or remote storage. Keeping the only copy under
SaveGames/0exposes it to the same accidental deletion, disk failure, or corruption as the live world. - Record when it was made. Use a date-and-time name such as
palworld-2026-10-15-2030-<WorldID>. Keep the original folder name inside the archive so it can be restored without guessing. - Confirm the copy. Open the backup and check that
Level.savexists, that anyLevelMeta.savandWorldOption.savpresent in the source were copied, and thatPlayers/contains the player data.
Do not delete the live save until the backup is stored and checked. If you use a graphical file manager, copy rather than move. If you use a synchronization tool, make sure it preserves the directory structure and does not silently omit subdirectories.

The smallest useful manual backup is a complete WorldID folder from one moment in time. These components have different jobs, but they are interdependent during recovery.
| Component | Why it matters | Backup rule |
|---|---|---|
Level.sav |
Core world state, including the map and its persistent objects. | Copy it with the matching player directory; never restore it alone. |
LevelMeta.sav |
World metadata when the server has created the file. | Include it whenever present in the source folder. |
WorldOption.sav |
World-option data when the server has created the file. | Include it whenever present in the source folder. |
Players/ |
Player-specific data such as characters and their progression. | Copy the entire directory from the same snapshot as the world files. |
A newer Level.sav paired with older files in Players/ is not a valid snapshot. The mismatch can produce missing characters, rolled-back inventories, or a world that does not correspond to what players last saw. Treat the folder as one unit when copying, archiving, and restoring.

Choose a storage and retention plan
Keep at least one backup outside the server that runs Palworld. A second copy on a separate physical or remote location protects against a failed drive, a mistaken deletion, or a host outage. An external SSD or hard drive is suitable for a local archive; remote storage is useful when the game server and your home equipment share a location.
Use a naming scheme that makes the recovery order obvious. Include the date, time, and WorldID, and do not overwrite the only known-good copy with a newer one. For example:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

palworld-backups/
palworld-2026-10-15-2030-ab12cd34/
ab12cd34/
Level.sav
LevelMeta.sav
WorldOption.sav
Players/
Keep several points in time rather than only the latest copy. A recent backup is useful for accidental deletion, while an older copy may be needed if corruption was discovered hours or days after it began. Before pruning an archive, open it and verify that it still has the complete WorldID folder.
Enable Palworld’s rolling backup feature
Palworld’s server configuration includes bIsUseBackupSaveData. When enabled, Pocketpair’s Palworld Server Guide says it will “Create backup directory in save data directory when enabled this parameter.” The copies are created under the save-data directory, so they are convenient for quick local recovery but remain dependent on the same server storage unless you copy them elsewhere.

The guide (version 0.6.8) documents these rolling intervals:
| Configured cadence | Documented retained save data |
|---|---|
| Every 30 seconds | 5 save data |
| Every 10 minutes | 6 save data |
| Every 1 hour | 12 save data |
| Every 1 day | 7 save data |
These are rolling local copies, not a substitute for an off-host archive. A full disk, damaged filesystem, or accidental deletion of the save directory can affect both the live world and its local backup directory. If you enable the option, periodically copy the useful backup set to your separate storage and apply the same date-based naming used for manual backups.
Manual, built-in, and managed backups compared
| Method | Strengths | Limits and responsibilities |
|---|---|---|
| Manual full-folder copy | Maximum control over timing, retention, naming, and off-host storage. | Requires a clean /Save, a stopped server, and a disciplined copying routine. |
| Built-in rolling backups | Automatic local recovery points through bIsUseBackupSaveData and the documented cadences. |
Retention is rolling and the files remain on the server unless you export them. |
| Managed hosting controls | A panel may simplify file access, scheduled backups, and restore operations. | Check the provider’s retention period and whether backups can be downloaded before relying on them. |
Many administrators use both automatic rolling copies for fast rollback and periodic complete-folder archives for disaster recovery. The two methods solve different problems: one reduces the time needed to recover from a recent mistake, while the other gives you an independently stored snapshot.
Restore a Palworld save after corruption
Restore only while the server is stopped. Preserve the suspect data first so you can investigate it or return to it if the chosen backup is older than expected.

- Stop
PalServer. Prevent new writes before touching the save directory. - Quarantine the current folder. Rename or copy the damaged or suspect
<WorldID>folder to a separate location, for examplesuspect-2026-10-15-<WorldID>. Do not overwrite it with the backup. - Select one dated snapshot. Confirm that the archive contains the complete WorldID folder, including
Players/, and that the files belong to the same backup time. - Restore the folder structure. Place the selected WorldID folder under
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. Preserve the folder name unless you are deliberately moving the world and will update the server setting described below. - Check the contents before starting. Verify
Level.sav, any accompanying metadata or option files, and the completePlayers/directory are present at the expected level. - Start the server for a private check. Join with an administrator before announcing that the world is available to everyone.
- Validate the recovery. Check the expected map, bases, inventories, guilds, and player characters. If any of these are wrong, stop immediately and try another coherent snapshot rather than allowing the server to continue saving over the restored files.
- Reopen the server. Only after the administrator check matches expectations should you let the wider player group reconnect.
Restoring a complete snapshot is safer than replacing only the file that appears damaged. A corruption symptom in the world can coexist with a valid player file, but there is no reliable way to make a mixed-time set coherent by guessing which individual files to keep.
Move a world to another server
A world transfer uses the same complete-folder copy as a backup restore. Shut down the source server after running /Save, copy the WorldID folder, and place it under the destination server’s Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/. The destination must receive the entire folder, including Players/, rather than only Level.sav.
If the folder name changes during the move, set DedicatedServerName= in GameUserSettings.ini to the exact name of the world folder on the destination. The transfer guidance requires those names to match for the server to load that world. Check spelling, capitalization, and any characters in the WorldID; a near match can cause the server to generate or open a different world.
- Stop the source server and run
/Savefirst. - Archive the source WorldID folder as your rollback copy.
- Install or prepare the destination server and stop it before copying data.
- Copy the WorldID folder into the destination’s
SaveGames/0/directory. - Set
DedicatedServerName=to the exact destination folder name when required. - Start privately and verify map, bases, player characters, inventories, and guilds.
- Keep the source archive until every player confirms the transfer succeeded.
Different operating systems do not change the save’s logical structure. Windows and Linux use different slash styles and installation roots, but the destination still needs the same WorldID folder and its matching contents.

Verify a restore before players return
Use an administrator account for the first login. A successful process should load the intended world rather than silently create a new one. Check each category deliberately:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- World identity: the map and world settings are the expected ones.
- Structures: major bases and other known builds are present.
- Characters: existing players can load their established characters instead of being prompted to create new ones.
- Progress: inventories, guild membership, and other known progression match the backup date.
- Server behavior: the server remains stable through a save and a controlled restart.
After the check, make a fresh backup of the now-confirmed state before inviting everyone back. This gives you a known-good checkpoint if the move or repair exposed another issue.
Troubleshoot a server that loads the wrong world
| Symptom | Likely cause | Immediate action |
|---|---|---|
| The server opens a new world. | The wrong directory was copied, the WorldID folder is in the wrong level, or DedicatedServerName= does not match after a move. |
Stop the server, preserve the current folder, and restore the complete intended WorldID folder with the exact matching name. |
| Players are asked to create new characters. | The Players/ directory is missing, belongs to another snapshot, or the server loaded a different world folder. |
Stop immediately and restore Players/ from the same dated snapshot as Level.sav. |
| Expected bases are missing. | The world file is from an older point, the wrong WorldID was selected, or files from different times were mixed. | Quarantine the current attempt and try a complete, verified snapshot. |
The backup folder contains only Level.sav. |
The copy was incomplete. | Do not use it as a full restore; locate an archive that includes the metadata files when present and the entire Players/ directory. |
| The supposed automatic backups disappeared with the server. | The rolling backup directory was stored on the same host or volume as the live save. |
Use an off-host manual copy or export the rolling backups regularly. |
When a restore fails, avoid repeated starts that continue writing into the wrong folder. Stop, retain the failed attempt, recheck the path and folder name, and use a single coherent archive. This preserves the evidence needed to choose the next recovery point.
A practical backup routine
For a small private server, run /Save, stop the service, and make a dated full-folder copy before updates, configuration changes, or major building sessions. For an active community server, combine the built-in rolling option with a scheduled process that copies complete WorldID folders to separate storage. Whatever schedule you choose, test the process by opening an archive and confirming the expected files exist.
- Keep the live save and its backup archives in different directories.
- Keep at least one archive on a different physical or remote location.
- Retain multiple dates so delayed corruption does not eliminate every recovery point.
- Preserve the original WorldID name inside each archive.
- Document who can stop the server, access the files, and perform a restore.
- After a restore or migration, perform an administrator-only validation before public access.
The central rule is consistency: save once, stop once, copy the complete folder, and restore that same complete folder as a unit. Palworld’s automatic copies can shorten recovery time, but only an independently stored archive protects the world when the server’s own storage is unavailable.
