Which Palworld setting controls the number of bases?
Palworld has two different limits that are easy to confuse. BaseCampMaxNum is the server-wide pool: every guild draws from the same total. BaseCampMaxNumInGuild is the allowance for one guild. Raising the guild value does not automatically create more room in the server-wide pool, and raising the server-wide value does not change the separate guild cap.

If a guild cannot place another base, first determine which ceiling it has reached. A server-wide shortage points to BaseCampMaxNum; a guild that has reached its own allowance points to BaseCampMaxNumInGuild. Changing the worker or building settings will not solve either problem.

The word WindowsServer matters. Palworld also ships a file named DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini, but that is a template. Editing the template alone does not change the running server.
Linux dedicated server
The official Linux path is:
steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini

For a Linux installation, Pocketpair’s setup example copies DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini into the active LinuxServer configuration directory before editing. The documentation explicitly warns: “Note that editing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini will not affect the changes.” Work on the copy in the active save-directory path.
Hosted and containerized installations
A hosting panel may expose the same file through a configuration editor rather than a normal file browser. Some Docker deployments expose the server-wide value as the BASE_CAMP_MAX_NUM environment variable, which maps to BaseCampMaxNum. In those deployments, change the variable in the compose file or panel, then let the container recreate or restart according to that deployment’s normal process. If the panel regenerates configuration files at startup, a direct file edit can be overwritten.

Prepare safely before changing the value
Changing an .ini value is simple, but a clean shutdown and a backup prevent the most common recovery problems.
- Stop the dedicated server cleanly. Do not edit while the process is still writing configuration or save data.
- Back up the current file. Make a copy of
PalWorldSettings.iniand give it a recognizable name, such as a date-stamped backup. Keep the original contents, including the completeOptionSettings=(...)line. - Confirm the installation type. Use the
WindowsServerdirectory for Windows andLinuxServerfor Linux. A similarly named template or another installation directory may not be the file your server loads. - Check the existing value first. Record the current
BaseCampMaxNumand, if relevant,BaseCampMaxNumInGuild. This gives you a known rollback value. - Use a plain-text editor. Do not let a word processor reformat punctuation, quotes, commas, or line endings.
Windows: step-by-step procedure
- Stop the Palworld dedicated server from its console, service wrapper, or hosting panel. Wait until the process has fully exited.
- Open
steamappscommonPalServerPalSavedConfigWindowsServer. - Make a backup of
PalWorldSettings.ini. - Open the active file in a plain-text editor and find the single line beginning with
OptionSettings=(. - Find
BaseCampMaxNum=within that line. Replace only the number. For example, a server-wide target of 200 usesBaseCampMaxNum=200. - If the goal is a per-guild allowance, edit
BaseCampMaxNumInGuild=instead. Keep the value within the limit documented by Pocketpair; the current guide lists 10 as the guild maximum. - Leave the surrounding parentheses, commas, equals signs, and other options unchanged. Save the file in the same directory with the same filename.
- Start the server again and wait for it to complete its normal startup.
- Test placement with a guild that has not already reached its separate guild cap. This distinguishes a server-wide change from a guild-specific limit.
Linux: step-by-step procedure
- Stop the Linux dedicated server completely through the service manager, shell session, container supervisor, or host panel that launched it.
- Open
steamapps/common/PalServer/Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. - Back up the active
PalWorldSettings.ini. - If this is a fresh Linux installation, follow the official setup pattern: copy
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniinto the activeLinuxServerdirectory, then edit the resulting active file. Do not leave the change only in the default template. - Open the active
PalWorldSettings.inias plain text and locateOptionSettings=(...). - Change the number after
BaseCampMaxNum=for a server-wide total, or afterBaseCampMaxNumInGuild=for the per-guild allowance. A server-wide example isBaseCampMaxNum=200. - Preserve the one-line option structure and save the file without changing its name or directory.
- Restart the server and test with a guild that still has room under its own cap.
How to edit the OptionSettings line without breaking it
Palworld stores these options in one parenthesized OptionSettings=(...) expression. The safest edit is a surgical replacement of the digits after the relevant key. Do not create a second OptionSettings line, move the key outside the parentheses, remove commas between options, or paste a second copy of the entire line below the first.
For a total-server change, locate the existing entry and change only its value:
BaseCampMaxNum=128 becomes BaseCampMaxNum=200
For a guild change, edit the separate entry:
BaseCampMaxNumInGuild=3 becomes BaseCampMaxNumInGuild=5

The numbers above illustrate the syntax. Choose a value appropriate to your server and keep the guild value within the current official maximum. If your file uses a different existing number, replace that number rather than adding another key.
Choosing a sensible limit
Server-wide budget
BaseCampMaxNum is a shared budget. If it is set to 200, that is the total pool available across all guilds, not 200 bases for every player or every guild. A busy community server therefore needs to account for competing guilds when selecting the number.
Per-guild allowance
BaseCampMaxNumInGuild applies separately to each guild. It is the setting to inspect when one guild needs another camp but the server still has unallocated capacity. Pocketpair’s current guide lists 10 as the maximum and cautions that increasing the value raises processing load.
Processing implications
More bases mean more base activity for the server to process. The official warning is about processing load, not a guaranteed frame-rate or memory result, so treat a larger value as a capacity change that should be tested on your own hardware and player population. Increase in measured steps, keep a rollback copy, and watch whether the server remains stable under normal activity.

Default values and version differences
A Paldb extraction reports BaseCampMaxNum=128 in DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini for build 4570950001, extracted on 15 September 2026. That is a version-specific shipped value, not a universal rule. Official versioned pages show that defaults can differ between releases, so read the value in the template shipped with your own server before deciding what to change.

The server was still running
If the process remained active while you edited, it may have retained the old configuration or written it back during shutdown. Stop it fully, restore the intended value if necessary, and restart only after saving.
The wrong file was edited
The most common path error is changing DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini or a file under the wrong platform directory. Confirm that the edited file is the one under Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ or Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/, depending on the server operating system.
The key is outside OptionSettings
Palworld reads the setting from the OptionSettings=(...) expression. A correctly spelled key placed on a separate line may be ignored. Move the edit into the existing expression and preserve its punctuation.

A panel or container overwrote the file
Managed hosts can regenerate PalWorldSettings.ini from panel fields, startup arguments, or environment variables. Check the panel’s configuration page and, for Docker deployments, the BASE_CAMP_MAX_NUM variable. Apply the change at the layer that owns the configuration, then restart through that same layer.

A guild cap is still blocking placement
Raising BaseCampMaxNum does not raise BaseCampMaxNumInGuild. Conversely, raising the guild value cannot help when the shared server pool is exhausted. Check both settings before treating the restart as unsuccessful.
Forum advice about deleting saves
No authoritative source establishes that deleting WorldOption.sav is universally required for this change. Treat deletion instructions as deployment-specific, and verify them with the host before removing any save file. A backup and a clean configuration edit are the safer first steps.

How to verify the change after restart
- Confirm that the server starts normally after the edited file is saved.
- Reopen the active file and make sure the intended number is still present. If it reverted, an automated panel, container startup process, or template copy likely replaced it.
- Use a guild that has not reached its own
BaseCampMaxNumInGuildallowance for the placement test. - If that guild can place a camp and the total has not been exhausted, the server-wide setting is being applied. If placement still fails, compare the two limits rather than changing unrelated worker or building settings.
- For a high limit, observe the server during ordinary multi-guild activity. The official guide’s processing-load warning means that a successful configuration load is not, by itself, proof that the chosen capacity is appropriate.
