Ocelot or cat: know which animal you have
The biggest source of confusion is that Minecraft used to treat the jungle ocelot as the wild form of a cat. In modern vanilla Minecraft, those mechanics are separate. Microsoft’s current Bedrock entity documentation says that minecraft:ocelot_tame remains only for backward compatibility and that “ocelots are no longer tameable in Vanilla Minecraft.”

If your goal is a pet that stays with you, skip the ocelot and search for a cat. If your goal is simply to make an ocelot less wary, use fish and approach it as a wild animal.

Where cats spawn in Minecraft
Villages are the best first destination
Current Minecraft guidance places cats in “well-populated villages.” In practical terms, search an active village rather than an isolated collection of structures. Walk through the settlement and check around houses, paths and open areas for an untamed cat.
Bring your fish before you begin the search. A cat can move away while you return for food, and the taming process depends on being able to approach it while holding the correct item.

Swamp huts are another source
The official Mob Menagerie article also identifies swamp huts as cat locations, where cats accompany witches. If village searches have failed, explore swamp-hut areas and look for a stray cat there.
Do not use the old jungle-cat assumption
Older guides often tell players to find a jungle ocelot and turn it into a cat. That advice reflects an earlier version of the game, not the current vanilla system. Cats were introduced in version 1.2.1 in March 2012, when the wild jungle cat was commonly described as an ocelot. Modern cats are more common and are found through villages and swamp huts instead.
How to tame a stray cat
A stray cat is the animal you can turn into a controllable companion. The visible confirmation is a collar around its neck.

- Collect raw cod or raw salmon. These are the foods identified for taming a stray cat. Carry enough for several feeding attempts.
- Hold the fish in your active hand. The cat must be able to recognize that you are approaching with a tempting item.
- Approach slowly. Move toward the cat without rushing. Sudden movement can make it retreat before you are close enough to feed it.
- Feed the cat. Use the normal interaction key for your edition while still holding the raw cod or salmon. Continue feeding as needed.
- Look for the collar. A collar appearing around the cat’s neck is the success signal that it has been tamed.
- Set its behavior. Interact with the tamed cat to make it sit, or leave it standing so it follows you.
The official instruction is to “slowly approach it while holding something tasty” and feed it raw cod or salmon until the collar appears. The collar, rather than a message or a numerical indicator, is the reliable in-game confirmation.
Why a cat keeps running away
- You may be moving too quickly. Stop sprinting and close the distance gradually.
- The fish may not be in your active hand. Switch back to the food before approaching.
- You may be pursuing an ocelot rather than a stray cat. An ocelot will not develop a collar through this process.
- The animal may have moved out of reach. Pause, keep the fish selected and let it come closer before trying again.
How to befriend an ocelot
“Befriend” is the most accurate modern description, because an ocelot can become trusting without becoming tame.
Use fish and let the ocelot approach
Hold qualifying fish or salmon and give the ocelot room to come toward you. Avoid sudden movement. The documented ocelot behavior includes avoiding players and a can_get_scared temptation behavior, so chasing it works against the interaction you want.
Feed within the temptation range
Microsoft’s Bedrock entity definition specifies a 16-block temptation radius. Stay close enough for the ocelot to detect the food, but do not crowd it. If it turns away, stop advancing and allow it to settle before trying again.
Understand the trust result
Each qualifying feeding action has a documented trust probability of 0.33. In other words, an individual feeding attempt is not guaranteed to produce the trusting state. Keep the fish selected and repeat the slow approach-and-feed cycle when the ocelot remains receptive.

Even after trust is established, the ocelot is not converted into a domestic cat. It does not gain the cat’s sit-or-follow-owner controls, collar, or companion utility. Treat it as a wild mob that has become less fearful, not as a pet waiting for a command.
What a tamed cat can do
Sit or follow
A tamed cat has a simple control state. Interact with it to make it sit in place, or leave it standing so it follows you. Sitting is useful when you want the cat to remain at a base; standing is the setting to use when you want it to travel with you.
Scare creepers and phantoms
The official Minecraft description says tamed cats scare away creepers and phantoms. This is defensive utility rather than a command system: the cat’s presence can influence those hostile mobs, but the cat is not a substitute for lighting, shelter or ordinary combat preparation.
Occasional gifts after sleep
A tamed cat may bring a gift after the player sleeps. The gifts are described as small animal remains. Because the behavior is occasional, regard it as flavor with a little incidental utility, not as a dependable way to collect a particular resource.

Variant appearance does not change the taming procedure described above. A stray cat of any listed appearance is approached with raw cod or raw salmon and becomes tamed when the collar appears.
A practical decision path
Use this quick sequence to avoid spending time on the wrong animal:
- Identify the mob. If it is the jungle-associated ocelot form, plan for trust only. If it is a village or swamp-hut cat, plan for taming.
- Choose the outcome. For a pet that sits, follows and provides cat behavior, continue searching for a stray cat. For a less fearful wild ocelot, carry fish and use the slow approach.
- Prepare the correct food. Raw cod or raw salmon are the explicitly documented cat-taming foods. The ocelot definition refers to fish or salmon for trust.
- Use movement as part of the mechanic. Keep the food selected, move slowly and stop if the animal becomes frightened.
- Verify success visually. A collar confirms cat taming. Trusting an ocelot does not produce a collar or pet controls.
Common mistakes and fixes
“I fed the ocelot, but it never became a cat”
This is expected in current vanilla Minecraft. Ocelot taming is retained only for backward compatibility, according to Microsoft’s Bedrock documentation. Feed it to build trust, but find a stray cat if you need an owned companion.
“The cat keeps escaping before I can feed it”
Keep raw cod or raw salmon selected and reduce your movement speed. Approach in short advances rather than sprinting directly at the cat. If it retreats, wait and let it return instead of following immediately.
“I cannot tell whether the process worked”
For a cat, check its neck: the collar is the success signal. For an ocelot, do not look for a collar or sit/follow commands; those belong to a tamed cat, not a trusting ocelot.

“I searched a jungle for a pet cat”
That search follows the historical model. Begin with well-populated villages, then check swamp huts. The jungle-oсelot story explains old tutorials but is not the current route to a domestic cat.
Why older guides disagree
Minecraft’s cat history explains the contradiction. Cats arrived in version 1.2.1 in March 2012, alongside the jungle biome and other early features. At that time, players were instructed to track down and tame a wild jungle cat “better known as an ocelot.” The modern game separates the two: cats are the tameable domestic mobs found in villages and swamp huts, while ocelots can only be made trusting.
When evaluating a tutorial, check whether it tells you to tame an ocelot, promises a collar after feeding one, or directs you to a jungle for a pet. Those are signs that the instructions describe the older system rather than current vanilla behavior.
What you actually need
- A source of raw cod or raw salmon for taming a stray cat.
- Fish or salmon for attempting to build trust with an ocelot.
- A village or swamp hut to search for a domestic cat.
- A calm approach and patience; rushing makes the animal retreat.
No physical product, accessory or external item is required for this in-game task. Everything needed is obtained and used inside Minecraft.
Bottom line for your next trip
For a pet, search a well-populated village or swamp hut and tame a stray cat with raw cod or raw salmon; stop when the collar appears. For an ocelot, hold fish or salmon, stay within its 16-block temptation range, avoid sudden movement and feed repeatedly, understanding that each qualifying attempt has a 0.33 trust probability. The ocelot may become trusting, but it will not become a tamed cat in current vanilla Minecraft.
