To change the name players see in the Unturned server list, stop the server, edit its server-specific Commands.dat, change the Name line, save the file, and start the server again. In a standard Unturned Dedicated Server (U3DS) installation, the file is U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/Commands.dat; a simple installation commonly uses U3DS/Servers/Default/Server/Commands.dat. Renaming the ServerID folder does not rename the public listing.

The setting that controls the public server name
Unturned reads the public listing name from the Name command in the server’s Commands.dat file. The command reference describes Name [Text] as assigning the name shown on the server list. The documented length is five to 50 characters, and the default is Unturned.

Name My Unturned ServerReplace My Unturned Server with the name you want players to see. Do not put the name in the ServerID folder name and do not treat the folder name as the public title; those are separate settings.

Change the name step by step
- Stop the server cleanly. Most U3DS settings cannot be configured while the server is open. Shut down the running server before opening its configuration file.
- Identify the server’s data directory. Go to
U3DS/Servers/<ServerID>/Server/. In the basic setup, the placeholder is oftenDefault, making the usual pathU3DS/Servers/Default/Server/. - Open
Commands.datas plain text. Each command occupies its own line. Use a plain-text editor so the file remains a normal text configuration file rather than a formatted document. - Add or replace the name command. Enter a line in this form:
Name Your Desired Name. If aNameline already exists, replace that line instead of leaving two competing entries. - Save the file. Keep the filename as
Commands.datand save it in that server’sServerdirectory. - Restart U3DS. The server reads this configuration during startup. Once it is online again, check the server list for the new public name.
Finding the correct Commands.dat
Standard U3DS layout
U3DS keeps each server’s configuration below its own directory:

U3DS/Servers/Default/Server/Commands.datThe important part is that you edit the Commands.dat belonging to the server instance you actually launch. A machine can contain more than one server directory, and changing a different directory will not alter the instance currently listed to players.
How the ServerID is chosen
The ServerID is the identifier used to create and organize a server’s files. It selects the data and configuration directory; it is not the display name. On Windows, the folder is supplied to the secure-server launch option. On Linux, the identifier appears after +InternetServer/ or +LanServer/ in the launch command. For example, +InternetServer/MyServer creates a directory under U3DS/Servers/MyServer.

Changing that identifier changes which saved data and configuration directory U3DS uses. It does not, by itself, change the title shown in the public server list.
Windows U3DS instructions
Locate the server files
Launch the Unturned Dedicated Server application at least once so it creates its server directory. Then open the U3DSServers directory and enter the folder for the instance you run. Continue into its Server subfolder and open Commands.dat.

Edit and apply the name
- Close the running dedicated server or stop it through the method you normally use.
- Open
U3DSServers<ServerID>ServerCommands.datin a plain-text editor. - Find the existing
Namecommand, or add one on its own line if none exists. - Set it to a value between five and 50 characters, such as
Name Weekend Survival. - Save, start the same shortcut or dedicated-server entry again, and inspect the server list after startup.
Linux U3DS instructions
Locate the server files
The Linux guide starts an internet server with:
./ServerHelper.sh +InternetServer/MyServerThat command uses MyServer as the ServerID and stores the configuration below U3DS/Servers/MyServer. A LAN launch uses the corresponding +LanServer/<ServerID> form. After stopping the process, open:

U3DS/Servers/MyServer/Server/Commands.datSubstitute the identifier from your own launch command if it is different.
Edit and restart
- Stop the Linux server process cleanly.
- Open the matching
Commands.datin a plain-text editor. - Add or replace the line
Name Your Desired Name. - Save the file without changing its location or filename.
- Run the same
ServerHelper.shcommand again and verify the listing after the server finishes loading.
The naming command is the same on Windows and Linux. Only the launch syntax and path separators differ.

Public name versus ServerID
These two names serve different purposes. The public name is a command read from Commands.dat and shown to players. The ServerID is the folder identifier used to select saved data and configuration. The official Windows guidance specifically states that the folder name has no impact on the server name shown publicly and is intended for personal organization. The Linux layout follows the same separation.

Because the settings have different scopes, renaming a folder can make U3DS use a different data directory without changing the public title. To rename the listing, edit the Name command in the active directory.

Editing one server when several are installed
If you operate multiple U3DS instances, each one has its own ServerID directory and its own Server/Commands.dat. The name change applies only to the file you edit. Use the launch configuration to determine which identifier belongs to the instance you want to rename, then follow that identifier into U3DS/Servers/.

For example, an installation containing U3DS/Servers/Default and U3DS/Servers/MyServer has two separate configuration locations. Editing Default/Server/Commands.dat will not rename the server launched with +InternetServer/MyServer.
Name-length and formatting rules
- The documented range is five to 50 characters.
- The command must begin with
Name, followed by the text of the desired server name. - Keep the command on one line, as U3DS commands are stored one per line.
- Save the file as plain text under the server’s
Serverdirectory. - Use the exact active
Commands.dat; a similarly named file in anotherServerIDdirectory controls a different instance.
A short value outside the documented range can prevent the intended name from being accepted. If you want to use a name close to either limit, count the characters before restarting.

The server was still running
U3DS reads the configuration at startup, and most settings cannot be configured while the server is open. Stop the process, save the file, and restart it. Merely saving while the server is online does not apply the new value immediately.

The wrong directory was edited
Check the launch argument and match its identifier to the folder under U3DS/Servers/. On Linux, compare the text after +InternetServer/ or +LanServer/. On Windows, compare the folder name after +secureserver. Then open the Server/Commands.dat below that exact directory.
The folder was renamed instead of the command
A renamed ServerID changes file organization, not the public listing title. Put the desired value in the Name line of the active Commands.dat.
The command is missing or malformed
Open the file again and confirm that the line starts with Name, is on its own line, and includes a value within the five-to-50-character range. Replace an old Name line rather than leaving multiple versions in the file.
The server has not completed a fresh startup
After saving, start the server and wait for it to come back online before checking the listing. The new title is available only after U3DS has loaded the updated configuration.
Choosing between the available approaches
There is one supported method for changing the public title: edit the server’s Name command while the server is offline, then restart it. Other actions affect different things and should not be substituted for that edit.

Does changing the name require paid hosting?
No. The documented procedure is a local configuration edit in U3DS followed by a restart. The name-setting command does not require paid hardware, additional software, or a hosting subscription. A managed host may operate the server for you, but hosting is separate from the naming process itself.
