Identify the Halo game before choosing hardware
“Halo” covers multiple releases with different support lists and requirements. The two clearest buying cases are Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection. They should not be treated as interchangeable PC or console workloads.

Halo Infinite
Xbox lists Halo Infinite for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 PCs. Its multiplayer and Campaign are separate offerings. Multiplayer is free-to-play on both PC and Xbox and does not require an active Game Pass subscription for online multiplayer. Campaign is a separate paid listing, although some Game Pass memberships may include it. Check the current Xbox or PC storefront and the membership catalogue when you budget, because listings and catalogues can change.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection
MCC bundles a different set of Halo campaigns and multiplayer components and has its own platform documentation. Halo Support documents installation on Xbox consoles and on PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app. Requirements and online-access rules vary by platform, so do not use Halo Infinite’s PC table as a substitute for an MCC check.
Compare the three practical buying routes
| Route | What is supported | Questions to answer before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S | Halo Infinite and MCC are supported. | Is a 1080p display acceptable? Which Halo games and modes will you play? Do you need the higher-resolution target associated with Series X? |
| Xbox Series X | Halo Infinite and MCC are supported. | Do you own a compatible 4K or high-refresh display? Are the maps and modes you care about among those that support the advertised performance modes? |
| Windows PC | Both named games are supported, provided the PC meets the exact game’s requirements. | Do your CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, Windows edition and SSD satisfy the relevant official table? What would an upgrade cost compared with buying a console? |
Current console prices, storage capacities and PC-market prices were not established in the available official material, so a price ranking would be unreliable. Compare live retailer and storefront figures separately, after you have identified the game and performance target.
What the Xbox options mean for Halo
Series S: a supported, lower-resolution route
Series S supports both Halo Infinite and MCC. Halo Support’s MCC enhancement page lists 1080p output for Series S, with 60 or 120Hz in the specified single-player and two-player split-screen modes. Those figures describe the modes on that enhancement page; they are not a promise that every Halo title, multiplayer mode or split-screen configuration uses the same setting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Confirm the console’s available storage and the install size shown by the current storefront before purchase; the supplied specifications do not establish a current storage figure or price.
Series X: the higher-resolution console route
Series X also supports Halo Infinite and MCC. The MCC enhancement documentation lists 4K output at 60 or 120Hz in its specified single-player and two-player split-screen modes. It is therefore a better fit for a 4K display, but the mode qualification matters: these numbers belong to the documented MCC enhancements, not every Halo game or every mode.

- Gaming Resolution: 1440p; Performance Target: Up to 120 FP.
- HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.
For Halo Infinite, Xbox describes performance of up to 120 frames per second and 4K on Series X and compatible PCs across supported maps and modes. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a guarantee for the whole game. You also need a TV or monitor that supports the intended resolution and refresh rate; a 120Hz-capable game cannot make a 60Hz display show 120Hz output.
Xbox One considerations
Halo Infinite is listed for Xbox One as well as newer Series consoles. If you already own an Xbox One, verify the current store listing and update requirements before buying Campaign or installing multiplayer. The Series-specific enhancement figures above should not be applied to Xbox One.
Windows PC requirements for Halo Infinite
Use the official Halo Infinite requirements page as a gate before buying or upgrading parts. Halo Support’s page, updated December 12, 2024, separates a minimum tier from a High (Recommended) tier:
| Component | Minimum | High (Recommended) |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 RS5 x64 | The same supported Windows baseline unless the current page states otherwise |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or Intel Core i5-4440 | AMD Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel Core i7-9700K |
| Graphics card | AMD Radeon RX 570 or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 |
| Graphics memory | 4GB or more VRAM | 8GB or more VRAM |
| System memory | 8GB or more RAM | 16GB or more RAM |
| Storage | 50GB or more SSD space | 50GB or more SSD space |
These are requirement tiers, not measured frame-rate promises. A PC that meets Minimum may launch and run the game under the supported configuration without matching the image quality or frame rate of a machine meeting High. Drivers, Windows updates, game patches, resolution and graphics settings all affect the result. Halo Support also advises checking current driver guidance from the relevant GPU manufacturer.
How to check an existing PC
- Open Windows Settings, choose System, then About, and record the processor model, installed RAM and Windows edition.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and inspect the GPU model, dedicated GPU memory and available disk information.
- Open File Explorer and confirm that the target SSD has at least the required free space, not merely that the drive has that capacity in total.
- Compare every component with the Halo Support table. A stronger CPU does not compensate for insufficient VRAM, and adequate RAM does not make an unsupported operating-system edition compatible.
- Check the current game page again immediately before buying parts. The December 12, 2024 table is a dated snapshot, and software or driver guidance can change.
Display and performance details that are easy to misunderstand
Xbox’s performance statement for Halo Infinite says “up to 120 FPS and 4K” on Series X and compatible PCs, limited to supported maps and modes and requiring a compatible TV or monitor. Treat all four conditions as part of the claim: the game, the hardware, the particular map or mode and the display must align.

- Enjoy over 100 games right out of the box with a 1 month Xbox Game Pass trial
- Watch 4K Blu-ray movies and stream 4K video on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Microsoft Movies & TV, and more
- Play with friends and family near and farsitting together on the sofa or around the world on Xbox Live, the fastest, most reliable gaming network
- Xbox One games and accessories work together
- A 4K panel alone does not create 4K rendering if the selected game mode or hardware does not support it.
- A 120Hz panel is necessary to display 120 frames per second, but it does not force the game to produce that rate.
- PC results depend on the selected resolution, graphics settings, drivers and the exact hardware combination; the official requirement table does not provide a universal benchmark.
- MCC’s Series S and Series X figures apply to the enhancement page’s described single-player and two-player split-screen modes. Do not generalize them to all MCC multiplayer modes or to Halo Infinite.
Online access, free multiplayer and Campaign costs
| Use case | What the official guidance supports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Halo Infinite multiplayer on Xbox | Free-to-play and no active Game Pass subscription required for online multiplayer. | The current store listing, account sign-in requirements and any optional paid content. |
| Halo Infinite multiplayer on PC | Free-to-play. | The current PC storefront, Windows support and hardware requirements. |
| Halo Infinite Campaign | Separate paid listing, or included with some Game Pass memberships. | Whether your chosen membership currently includes Campaign and whether you prefer buying it outright. |
| MCC on Xbox console | Halo Support’s requirements page says online play needs an Xbox network account and an active Game Pass subscription. | The current membership tier and the exact console edition you are accessing. |
| MCC on PC | PC rules differ; Steam play is documented without an active Xbox subscription, while other PC storefront arrangements can have different requirements. | The storefront you will use and its current sign-in or online terms. |
Do not infer MCC’s console subscription rule from Halo Infinite’s free multiplayer rule. They are different products with different documented access conditions.
Choose based on your starting point
You already own a supported Xbox
First identify whether you want Infinite, MCC or both. An existing Xbox One can cover Infinite according to Xbox’s platform listing, while Series consoles add the newer enhancement options documented for MCC and the higher-end performance target described for Infinite. Check the current Campaign listing or membership catalogue before paying for a mode you may already access through a subscription.
You already own a gaming PC
Do not decide from the GPU name alone. Compare CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, Windows edition and SSD space against the exact game table. If the machine falls below Minimum in one category, price the missing upgrade and include the cost of a suitable display if you are pursuing high refresh or 4K output. No official source here establishes a blanket “best” PC configuration or benchmark.
You are buying a complete system
Choose the target game and display first, then select hardware. A Series S is a supported 1080p-oriented MCC route; Series X is the console route for the documented 4K enhancements and Infinite’s higher performance ceiling; a Windows PC offers configurable settings but requires component-by-component verification. The practical winner is the route that meets your game, display and subscription needs without paying for capability you will not use.

Installing Halo Infinite
- On Xbox, open the current Xbox store listing for Halo Infinite, choose the multiplayer or Campaign product you intend to use, and review the edition and membership information before confirming the install.
- On Windows, use the supported PC storefront shown by the current Halo installation guidance, sign in with the required account, and select the same multiplayer or Campaign product distinction.
- Allow the installation to complete on an SSD with the required free space, then install pending game, Windows and GPU-driver updates.
- Launch the game and select a resolution and refresh rate supported by both the hardware and display. If a desired mode is missing, test the display connection, driver and in-game settings before assuming the console or PC is defective.
Installing MCC
- On Xbox, open the MCC listing and verify the console edition, included components and current online-access requirement.
- On PC, choose Steam, the Microsoft Store or the Xbox PC app. The storefront determines the installation workflow and can affect account and subscription rules.
- Read the current MCC PC requirements for the components and Windows version of your machine; Infinite’s table is not a substitute.
- Install the specific campaigns or multiplayer components you need if the storefront offers component selection, leaving enough SSD space for updates.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying for the franchise instead of a game
Fix this by writing down the exact title and mode first. Platform support, PC requirements and subscription rules are title-specific.

Assuming free multiplayer means every Halo mode is free
Infinite multiplayer is free-to-play, but Campaign is a separate purchase or a possible membership benefit. Confirm the product name on the checkout page.
Turning “up to” into a guaranteed frame rate
Check the supported map or mode and the display specification. The Xbox statement is conditional, not a promise of 120 FPS in every situation.
Using the wrong PC requirements
Compare MCC with its own current requirements and Infinite with the Halo Support table updated December 12, 2024. Recheck both before purchasing parts because drivers and software guidance can change.
Forgetting console online rules
An active Game Pass subscription is part of the documented MCC Xbox online requirement, while Infinite multiplayer does not require an active Game Pass subscription. PC storefront rules differ again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buying a high-refresh display without a compatible setup
Match the display to the console or PC, game, map or mode and cable/input path. A display’s advertised refresh rate is not evidence that a particular Halo mode will output at that rate.
Quick Recap
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Name the exact Halo game and mode: Infinite multiplayer, Infinite Campaign, MCC campaign, MCC multiplayer or split-screen.
- Confirm that your intended Xbox model or Windows storefront supports that title.
- For PC, check CPU, GPU, VRAM, RAM, Windows edition and SSD space against the game’s official requirements.
- Decide whether you need 1080p, 4K, 60Hz or a higher-refresh display, and verify that the chosen game mode supports the target.
- Separate the free Infinite multiplayer decision from Campaign pricing.
- Check the current Game Pass catalogue and the online requirement for the platform you will use.
- Recheck official support pages, storefront listings, drivers and game updates immediately before purchase.
