How to Change the Operating System on a VPS Safely

A safe VPS OS change starts with a restorable backup and a choice between reinstalling, upgrading in place, or migrating to a second server. This guide covers exact preparation, commands, DNS and SSH changes, and post-migration validation.

There are three legitimate ways to change a VPS operating system: a provider-panel reinstall, an in-place release upgrade, or a side-by-side migration to a second server. A panel reinstall is the quickest way to replace Ubuntu with Debian (or another available image), but it erases the VPS disk. An in-place upgrade keeps the existing machine and data but can break packages or control panels. A second VPS takes more preparation and cost, yet lets you test before moving production traffic.

Whichever method you choose, make a restorable backup, record networking and access details, confirm application compatibility, and ensure you can use the provider’s web console or rescue mode if SSH stops working.

Choose the method before touching the server

Your target determines the safe procedure. Changing from one distribution to another is normally a replacement or migration, not an in-place package operation. Moving from one release to a newer release of the same distribution may be supported in place.

Method What changes Data risk Best use
Provider-panel reinstall The provider reprovisions the VPS from a selected image. Disk contents are erased after confirmation. A clean replacement when you have a verified backup and can tolerate rebuilding the server.
In-place release upgrade The existing installation, packages, users and services are upgraded. Data remains on the machine, but dependency, kernel and control-panel failures are possible. A supported Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or CentOS Stream release transition.
Side-by-side migration A new VPS runs the target OS while the old VPS remains available. Lowest production exposure; migration errors can be corrected before cutover. Important production services, complex stacks, or a move between unrelated distributions.

Do not treat an in-place command such as dist-upgrade as a general-purpose way to turn Debian into Ubuntu or a control-panel server into another distribution. Distribution vendors and hosting panels support specific paths only.

Prepare a recovery plan

Make a backup you can actually restore

Create a provider snapshot and an independent backup before changing anything. A snapshot can capture application data, files, configuration, the kernel, installed packages and dependencies, but it is not automatically a complete system backup. Keep an off-server copy of critical data and test restoring at least one representative database and application directory.

  • Export MySQL or MariaDB databases with mysqldump, and PostgreSQL databases with pg_dump.
  • Copy application files, uploads, user home directories and persistent storage to separate storage.
  • Save TLS certificates and renewal configuration, environment files, deployment keys and service secrets securely.
  • Record users, SSH authorized keys, /etc/ssh/sshd_config, cron jobs, systemd unit files, firewall rules and package inventories.
  • Document database users, web-server virtual hosts, runtime versions, queues, workers and any external integrations.

A backup that exists but cannot be decrypted, downloaded or restored does not provide a reliable rollback.

Check support and licensing

Confirm that the target image is offered for your exact VPS plan and location. Provider catalogs change and can differ between plans. Available examples include Ubuntu, Debian, AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream, Fedora, openSUSE, Alpine, Arch and Windows Server, but no provider offers every image on every service.

Check the target OS against your application runtime, kernel modules, storage drivers, control panel, security agent and software licenses. Windows eligibility and licensing are especially provider-specific. If a control panel is installed, follow its documented migration path rather than generic distribution-upgrade instructions.

Record access and network state

Write down the public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, DNS records and TTL values, reverse-DNS or PTR settings, attached volumes, private-network addresses and provider-specific firewall rules. Confirm that you can open the provider’s browser console or rescue environment. This out-of-band access is essential if a new firewall rule, broken SSH configuration or failed kernel boot prevents normal login.

Provider-panel reinstall: replace the OS cleanly

A reinstall is the straightforward answer when you want a different distribution, such as replacing Ubuntu with Debian. It is destructive. OVHcloud’s VPS documentation states: “A reinstallation will delete all data currently hosted on the VPS (except for additional disks).” Treat the confirmation as irreversible unless your provider offers a tested snapshot rollback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the VPS management panel. Select the server and locate the action labelled Reinstall, Rebuild, OS template or similar.
  2. Select the image and release. Choose only a distribution and version listed for that plan. Read whether the image is a standard, minimal or control-panel edition.
  3. Set new access credentials. Preinstall an SSH public key when offered, or set a new root password. Windows images generally require an Administrator credential. Store the credential in a password manager; never paste it into a public ticket or script.
  4. Review the destructive warning. Verify the selected server, image, attached disks and backup status. Confirm that any additional disk you expect to preserve is excluded from the wipe according to the provider’s warning.
  5. Submit and wait for provisioning. Provider documentation commonly describes completion as taking a few minutes, but the actual interval depends on image, host load and storage. Do not repeatedly submit the action.
  6. Retrieve one-time credentials and connection details. The panel may display a temporary password, console link or initial login instructions.
  7. Remove the old SSH host key. Because the rebuilt system has a new host key, an existing client may report a man-in-the-middle warning. After confirming the VPS address is correct, remove the old entry with ssh-keygen -R YOUR_VPS_IP, then reconnect and verify the new fingerprint through the provider console or another trusted channel.
  8. Patch and harden immediately. Update packages, create a non-root user with sudo access, install and configure a firewall, disable password SSH login after key access works, and restrict exposed ports.
  9. Restore and validate. Recreate users, keys, services, scheduled jobs and firewall policy; restore databases and files; renew certificates; and test every public endpoint before declaring the migration complete.

What a reinstall does not automatically restore

Packages, application configuration, cron entries, users, SSH keys, firewall rules, certificates and databases stored on the system disk are gone. An attached additional disk may survive on some services, but do not assume it is mounted, unchanged or included in backups. Inspect mounts and filesystem identifiers before writing restored data.

In-place release upgrades

Use an in-place procedure only when the distribution documents a supported path and every important application supports the destination release. This approach preserves the VPS identity and usually avoids rebuilding services, but a failed dependency transition can leave the machine partially upgraded.

Ubuntu and Debian preparation

  1. Take a snapshot and a separate backup, then make sure you have console or rescue access.
  2. Update the current release completely with sudo apt update, sudo apt upgrade and sudo apt full-upgrade.
  3. Review and remove obsolete packages only after checking that no required service depends on them. Reboot if a new kernel was installed and confirm all services return.
  4. For Ubuntu, start the supported major-release procedure with sudo do-release-upgrade. Follow the prompts, review configuration-file replacements and keep a recovery session open.
  5. For Debian, change repositories and follow the release-specific upgrade guidance. Do not copy repository names blindly between releases; verify that every enabled third-party repository supports the destination.
  6. Reboot when instructed and verify the result with cat /etc/os-release. Check the kernel, failed systemd units, network interfaces, firewall state, web server, database and application logs.

An in-place upgrade cannot reliably convert Debian into Ubuntu or Ubuntu into Debian. Those are different distributions with different package metadata and defaults; use a reinstall or side-by-side migration instead.

AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux and CentOS Stream

Use the supported ELevate or Leapp workflow for the exact source and destination pair. Run every pre-check, resolve reported repository, package and configuration errors, and keep a full backup. Do not proceed while a pre-check reports an unresolved blocker. The commands and supported version combinations change, so follow the current documentation for the installed release rather than adapting an unrelated example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control panels require their own migration tools

Generic distribution upgrades can corrupt hosting panels. OVHcloud warns that generic dist-upgrade or Leapp procedures may damage Plesk or cPanel installations. Use the panel vendor’s supported migration utility, such as Plesk’s centos2alma or cPanel Elevate where applicable, and retain a complete backup. If the panel does not support the desired target, build a new VPS and migrate accounts instead.

Verify and recover

After an in-place upgrade, inspect /etc/os-release, package-manager output, kernel version, disk space and service status. Test SSH from a second session before closing the first. Check HTTPS certificates, background workers, outbound email, database connections, scheduled tasks and monitoring. If the machine will not boot or critical packages are broken, use the provider console or rescue mode to retrieve logs and restore the snapshot or rebuild from the tested backup; do not keep applying random package commands to a damaged production system.

Side-by-side migration: the safer production cutover

A second VPS lets you construct the target environment without interrupting the original. OVHcloud describes this approach as suitable for starting over on a new environment or testing in parallel without affecting production. It requires more setup, but it gives you a working rollback: the old VPS stays online until the new one is proven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Order a second VPS. Select the target OS, compatible CPU, memory, storage, region and networking. Keep the old server running.
  2. Recreate the base security model. Add the same administrative users and SSH keys, apply updates, configure the firewall, set the timezone and install monitoring. Do not copy an old firewall wholesale without checking interface names and required ports.
  3. Install application dependencies. Match or deliberately upgrade web-server, language-runtime, database, queue and worker versions. Record any differences so they are tested rather than discovered at cutover.
  4. Transfer databases. Create consistent dumps with mysqldump or pg_dump, copy them over an encrypted channel, import them on the new server and recreate database users and permissions. For a busy database, schedule a final dump or replication catch-up during the cutover window.
  5. Synchronize files. Use rsync to copy directories such as /var/www and /home, excluding caches, sockets and machine-specific runtime files. Preserve ownership and permissions, then perform a final delta sync after writes are paused.
  6. Recreate configuration. Install certificates, environment files, virtual hosts, systemd units, cron jobs, log rotation, backup agents and application secrets. Review every secret rather than copying credentials into an unintended location.
  7. Test privately. Use a staging hostname or override DNS locally in your workstation’s hosts file. Exercise login, checkout or other critical workflows, uploads, background jobs, database writes, email, IPv6 and TLS renewal.
  8. Plan the address change. If the provider supports moving an additional IP, attach it to the new VPS according to its procedure. Otherwise lower DNS TTL in advance and prepare updated A and AAAA records. Confirm reverse DNS and firewall rules for the destination.
  9. Cut over. Stop or drain writes on the old service, run the final database and file synchronization, switch the additional IP or DNS records, then start services on the new VPS.
  10. Monitor before cancellation. Watch application logs, error rates, queues, certificates, resource use and customer reports throughout DNS propagation. Keep the old VPS intact until traffic is consistently reaching the new host and every validation check passes.

IP addresses, DNS and SSH after the change

Item Likely result What to verify
Service IP Some providers retain the address across a panel reinstall; others assign a new one, and side-by-side migration normally starts with a second address. Read the confirmation screen and provider documentation for the exact service. Update DNS, monitoring, allow-lists and client configuration if it changes.
Plan and location Often unchanged by a reinstall. Confirm the server is in the intended region and still has the expected resources.
Reverse DNS/PTR May remain, reset or require manual recreation. Check the provider’s network panel and query the hostname after the OS is online.
SSH host key Changes when the operating system is rebuilt. Remove the old key with ssh-keygen -R YOUR_VPS_IP only after independently confirming the server identity.
Credentials Root, Administrator, initial user passwords and authorized keys may be replaced. Use the one-time credentials, install your intended keys and rotate secrets.
Additional disks Some providers exclude them from the reinstall wipe. Read the destructive warning, inspect mounts and make a separate backup before reuse.
DNS records Unchanged until you edit them, but cached answers persist until their TTL expires. Check A, AAAA, MX, TXT and service-specific records from multiple networks during propagation.

Statements about retained IPs, locations and reverse DNS are provider-specific. Never infer that a reinstall preserves them from another VPS product or region.

Post-change hardening and validation checklist

  • Apply all security updates and reboot into the current supported kernel.
  • Create a non-root administrative user, test sudo, and use SSH keys. Disable direct root and password login only after key access has been tested in a separate session.
  • Configure a default-deny firewall and open only required ports for SSH, HTTP, HTTPS, DNS or application-specific services.
  • Restore certificates and verify the complete chain, automatic renewal and correct private-key permissions.
  • Recreate scheduled jobs, systemd services, workers, queues, log rotation and monitoring checks.
  • Restore databases and files, then test ownership, permissions, SELinux or AppArmor policy and service startup after reboot.
  • Check outbound connections, email reputation settings, object-storage credentials, payment or API integrations and allow-lists.
  • Run application-level tests from outside the VPS, including IPv4 and IPv6 where enabled.
  • Take a fresh baseline snapshot or backup after the new system is healthy.

Troubleshooting common failures

SSH reports a host-key mismatch

Do not bypass the warning with a blanket option. Confirm the VPS IP and new fingerprint through the provider console, then remove only the old entry with ssh-keygen -R YOUR_VPS_IP and reconnect. A mismatch on an unreinstalled server requires investigation before deleting any key.

The server is unreachable after reinstall

Open the provider console or rescue mode, inspect interface names, routes, DHCP or static network configuration and firewall rules, and verify that the SSH service is listening. A distribution image may use different network configuration files or disable password authentication by default.

Applications fail after an in-place upgrade

Check failed systemd units, package-manager errors, runtime versions, changed configuration defaults and third-party repositories. Restore the snapshot or rebuild from backup if the dependency graph is inconsistent; repeated ad-hoc downgrades often make recovery harder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS still points to the old VPS

Inspect authoritative records, TTLs and resolver caches. Confirm both A and AAAA records; an overlooked AAAA record can send IPv6 users to the old host. Keep the old service available until cached responses have expired and logs show that normal traffic has moved.

A control panel will not start

Stop and consult the panel’s supported migration procedure. Generic OS upgrade commands can leave panel-managed packages in an unsupported state. Use a vendor migration utility or restore the tested backup onto a compatible clean VPS.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose a provider-panel reinstall when the disk can be wiped, the target image is supported and you have a tested restore plan.
  • Choose an in-place upgrade only for a documented release path with compatible software and console access.
  • Choose side-by-side migration when uptime, rollback and pre-cutover testing matter more than minimizing setup work.

Changing the operating system is complete only after access, security, data integrity, networking and application behavior have all been verified. The fastest button is not automatically the safest method; the correct choice is the one that matches your distribution path and recovery capability.
