What a normal Coolify update actually changes
Coolify’s documented self-hosted update replaces the version of the Coolify control plane. It does not update the workloads that the control plane manages. In practical terms, the update changes Coolify’s dashboard, orchestration logic, and internal control-plane components, while leaving your deployed applications, databases, services, and managed servers outside the update scope.

The control plane must restart to load the new version, so the dashboard is temporarily unavailable during the maintenance window. Plan around that interruption and do not begin while a deployment is still running.
What is not included
- Application images are not upgraded.
- Managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, or other databases are not upgraded.
- Services deployed through Coolify are not upgraded.
- Remote or local managed servers are not upgraded.
This boundary is important when interpreting a successful update: a new Coolify version does not mean that every application image or database engine is now on a newer release.
Self-hosted or Cloud: identify the operating model first
Self-hosted instances
The terminal and dashboard procedures in this guide apply to Coolify installations that you administer on your own server. You need administrative access to the Coolify dashboard and, when using the terminal procedure, an SSH session with the permissions required by the current release’s upgrade instructions.
Coolify Cloud
Coolify Cloud updates are managed by the Coolify team. Do not run the self-hosted commands against a Cloud account. Use the Cloud service’s normal account and status channels for availability and version information.
Prepare recovery before opening the updater
A backup is the first safety control, not an optional post-update task. Create an instance backup before you start, and make sure the copy you would need for recovery is not trapped on the same server as the installation.
Create and export an instance backup
- Open the self-hosted Coolify dashboard and create an instance backup using the available backup function.
- Wait for the backup operation to finish and confirm that the resulting artifact exists.
- Copy important backup material to storage outside the Coolify server. An on-server dump alone does not protect you from a failed disk, filesystem corruption, or an inaccessible host.
- Preserve
/data/coolify/source/.envin a secure location. This file contains the instanceAPP_KEY, which is needed to recover the installation correctly.
Protect the exported file and backup according to your organization’s secret-handling policy. The .env file can contain sensitive configuration; do not paste it into tickets or commit it to a public repository.

If your maintenance window includes a deliberate PostgreSQL major-version migration, treat the recovery preparation as a separate project. Keep an external copy of the PostgreSQL dump, the previous database volume information, rollback metadata, and /data/coolify/source/.env. Do not assume that an ordinary instance backup or a normal Coolify update will create a database-major-version rollback point.
Read the release notes and drain work
Review the release notes for the exact Coolify version you intend to install. Look for migration notes, prerequisites, known issues, and any version-specific change to the supported update procedure. The updater itself should be the current procedure for that release; do not replace it with an arbitrary container-image pull.
Finish active deployments
Allow every active deployment to complete before starting the update. Starting a control-plane restart while a deployment is in progress can leave you without dashboard visibility when you most need it. If a deployment is stuck, resolve or deliberately cancel it first, then confirm the project is idle.

Choose the maintenance window
Schedule a period in which a short dashboard interruption is acceptable. The restart affects Coolify’s management interface; it is not an instruction to redeploy every application. Keep an SSH connection available even if you plan to begin from the dashboard, because the terminal is useful for watching progress and preserving logs.

Choose a self-hosted update path
Use the dashboard path when the current interface is healthy and the available update is presented there. Use the terminal procedure when the release notes require it, when dashboard access is impaired, or when your operations process requires a visible SSH transcript.

Step-by-step: update a self-hosted Coolify control plane
1. Confirm the target version
Record the version currently installed and the version you plan to install. Read the target release notes and confirm that your installation meets any stated prerequisites. This record makes later troubleshooting and rollback decisions much clearer.
2. Confirm recovery material
Verify that the instance backup completed, that an important copy is outside the server, and that /data/coolify/source/.env was preserved with its APP_KEY. If any of these checks fails, stop and fix the recovery plan before updating.
3. Drain deployments
In the dashboard, check the deployment activity for every project and resource. Wait for running jobs to finish and make sure no scheduled operation is about to start during the maintenance window.
4. Start the supported updater
- For a dashboard update, open Settings → Updates in the self-hosted Coolify dashboard and use the available update action.
- For a terminal update, follow the current official Coolify upgrade procedure for the selected release. Do not substitute a generic Docker image pull or an application redeploy for the control-plane updater.
The exact terminal invocation can change with the release, so use the procedure documented for the version you selected rather than copying an old command from an unrelated installation.
5. Keep the terminal open until completion
If you started or are monitoring the operation through SSH, keep that shell open until the updater reports completion. Interrupting the session can hide the final status and leave you without the most useful diagnostic information.
The update writes a timestamped log under /data/coolify/source/. A log name may look like upgrade-2026-07-11-12-00-00.log; the date and time in that example identify the run and are not a promise of a particular filename for your update.
6. Wait for the control-plane restart
Expect the dashboard to be unavailable while Coolify restarts. Do not repeatedly start another update because the login page is temporarily unreachable. Wait for the updater’s completion message and for the service to become responsive again.

7. Record the result
Retain the newest upgrade log with your maintenance record. Note the old version, target version, start and finish times, backup location, and any warnings printed by the updater.
Post-update verification: prove that management recovered
When the dashboard returns, verify the control plane in layers rather than relying only on a successful login.

These checks verify the control plane and its inventory. They do not constitute an application upgrade. If an application needs a newer image or a database needs a security patch, schedule that work separately using the application or database’s own procedure.
What to do if the update is unusable
Preserve evidence first
Keep the newest timestamped upgrade log and note what changed immediately before the failure. Avoid deleting containers, volumes, or source files while you are still deciding whether the problem is a startup issue, a connection issue, or an incompatible database state.
Restore a known-good instance backup
If the updated control plane cannot be made usable, use the known-good instance backup and the preserved /data/coolify/source/.env. Recovery should restore a compatible control-plane and database state, not merely replace one application image.
Why a downgrade is not a complete rollback
Coolify’s downgrade operation replaces the self-hosted control-plane version. It does not automatically restore the earlier database state. Therefore, repeatedly downgrading is not a substitute for restoring a compatible backup when the update has changed data structures or migration state.

PostgreSQL major-version upgrades are a separate operation

Do not infer a PostgreSQL upgrade from a successful Coolify update. If you intentionally need a newer major version, schedule and execute that migration independently.

Preflight checks
- Confirm that the internal
coolify-dbcontainer is running. - Print and record its current
server_version. - Choose a higher supported numeric major version as the target. The target must be a supported major and numerically higher than the current one.
- Confirm that the external backup, the current database volume information, rollback metadata, and
/data/coolify/source/.envare available. - Choose a window that allows the Coolify application container to stop and the database volume to be created and validated.
Record the current version before changing anything. That value is the reference for verifying the migration and for deciding whether a rollback is necessary.
Run the migration script
From the Coolify host, run the supplied migration script with the target major version:
/data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh <target-major>Keep the shell open until the script completes. The documented workflow stops the Coolify application container, creates a compressed pg_dumpall backup under /data/coolify/backups/internal-postgres/, creates and validates a new database volume and container, writes rollback metadata, and starts the stack with the new database.
The script’s internal dump is an important safeguard, but it should not be your only copy. Keep the separately exported backup outside the Coolify server.

- Confirm that the database reports the intended target major version.
- Open the dashboard and confirm that it loads normally.
- Check that projects and resources are present.
- Validate Servers → localhost.
- Test every other managed-server connection that matters to your operations.
Only after these checks pass should you treat the migration as complete. A successful script exit without a usable dashboard or valid server connections is not sufficient.
Rollback the PostgreSQL migration
Rollback is available while the previous volume and rollback metadata remain available:
/data/coolify/source/upgrade-postgres.sh rollbackUse the rollback command from the Coolify host, keep the shell open, and then repeat the database-version, dashboard, project, resource, localhost, and managed-server checks. If the previous volume or metadata has been removed, this scripted rollback path may no longer be available; that is why the external dump and preserved recovery files must be retained.

Updating the Coolify CLI is different
The Coolify CLI is a separate client from the self-hosted Coolify control plane. Running the CLI update replaces the CLI binary for the operating system and architecture; it does not update the server-side Coolify installation or any managed workload.

After updating the CLI, verify the client itself and its saved contexts:
coolify version
coolify context verifyThe CLI update leaves its configuration file and saved contexts unchanged. If your goal is to update the dashboard or the self-hosted instance, use the self-hosted update procedure instead of coolify update.
Common failure modes and the right response
The dashboard is unreachable immediately after starting
This is expected during the control-plane restart. Wait for the updater to report completion and for the dashboard to return. If it remains unavailable, use the SSH session and the timestamped log rather than launching another update.
The update appears complete, but the old version is still shown
Confirm that you are connected to the intended Coolify host and that the updater actually reported completion. Check the newest log under /data/coolify/source/. Do not assume that pulling a different application image will change the control-plane version.
Projects or resources appear missing
Stop and verify the instance identity, then inspect the upgrade log and backup before changing volumes or configuration. A missing view can be an access or startup problem; deleting data can turn it into permanent loss.
Servers → localhost fails validation
Preserve the log, then investigate local Docker access and the Coolify service state on the host. Re-deploying an application does not repair a broken control-plane connection.
A PostgreSQL version changed unexpectedly
A normal Coolify update is not supposed to perform a PostgreSQL major migration. Record the observed server_version, preserve the current state, and compare the operation you ran with the documented PostgreSQL migration procedure before attempting any rollback.

- Target Coolify version and release-note review date.
- Backup completion time and external backup location.
- Confirmation that
/data/coolify/source/.envand itsAPP_KEYwere preserved. - Upgrade start and finish times.
- Post-update results for the dashboard, version display, projects, resources, Servers → localhost, and other managed servers.
- For PostgreSQL migrations, the old and target
server_version, dump location, volume information, and rollback metadata status.
