Change the simultaneous-player cap in the Master shard’s cluster.ini: under [GAMEPLAY], set max_players = N, save the file, and restart the dedicated server. Klei’s settings guide lists 16 as the default. If you launch the server from a command line, -players N sets the cap for that process and overrides the value in cluster.ini; Klei documents 1–64 as the valid command-line range.

This is a server-wide concurrency limit, not a permanent roster size. Whitelist reservations use slots from that limit, and in a multi-shard cluster only the Master copy of cluster.ini controls it.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuick answer: change the cap in five steps
- Stop the dedicated server. Do not edit a configuration file while the running process may still be writing it.
- Open the cluster’s
cluster.ini. In a multi-shard installation, use the file associated with the Master shard. - Find the
[GAMEPLAY]section. Add or edit the linemax_players = N, replacingNwith the simultaneous-player cap you want. - Save the file. Keep the setting in the Master cluster configuration; copies belonging to secondary shards do not control this option.
- Restart the server. The new value is read when the server starts. If your startup command includes
-players N, that argument takes precedence over the file.
For example, to use a 12-player cap, the relevant section should contain:
[GAMEPLAY]
max_players = 12
To increase a server that currently stops at six players, replace the existing value with the desired number, then restart. There is no separate “six-player mode” to disable; the active cap comes from the Master cluster.ini or an overriding launch argument.

What max_players actually controls
A simultaneous connection cap
max_players limits how many players can be connected to the cluster at one time. It does not define how many people may ever be invited, how many characters can exist in a world, or how large a permanent community roster can be. When one player leaves, that connection slot becomes available to another player, subject to any reservations and other server rules.
The documented default and command-line range
Klei’s settings guide lists 16 as the default value for max_players. Klei’s 2026 command-line guide documents 1 through 64 as the valid range for -players N. Treat the range qualification as belonging specifically to the documented launch option; do not assume that every older configuration tool or third-party panel exposes the same limits.
Reserved whitelist slots count toward the maximum
Reserved whitelist slots are not extra capacity on top of max_players. They consume places within the maximum. If the cap is 16 and several slots are reserved, fewer unreserved players can join while those reservations remain in effect. This can make a server appear to have “unused” capacity to a non-whitelisted player even though the configured maximum has been reached for ordinary joins.
Only the Master cluster configuration matters
Klei identifies this as a Master-cluster-only setting. A multi-shard cluster may contain several configuration files, but changing max_players in a secondary shard’s file will not change the cluster’s player limit. Always identify the Master shard’s cluster.ini before editing.
Choose between the file setting and -players
| Method | Where the value is set | Persistence | Precedence and scope | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
max_players = N |
[GAMEPLAY] in the Master cluster.ini |
Persists in the server configuration until changed | Applies to the cluster’s Master-controlled limit | A stable cap for normal restarts |
-players N |
The command that launches the server process | Applies whenever that launch command is used; it need not change the file | Overrides [GAMEPLAY] / max_players for the launched process |
Scripts, temporary events, or deployments that need a per-launch value |
Use the file when the cap should survive ordinary restarts and remain visible to whoever maintains the cluster. Use -players when your startup script, scheduler, or hosting panel intentionally supplies a value at launch. If both are present, troubleshoot the command line first: the argument wins.

Before you edit the server
Stop the process cleanly
Shut down the dedicated server before changing the file. A running process can retain the old value in memory, overwrite your edit during shutdown, or start a save operation while you are writing. After stopping it, confirm that the server process is no longer running before opening the configuration.

Pick a number based on simultaneous connections, not the total number of people who may play during the week. If 20 friends share a world but no more than 10 play together, a cap of 10 is the relevant target. If whitelist reservations are configured, include those reserved places in the number; they reduce the slots available to everyone else.
Check how the server is started
Before changing the file, inspect the service, script, or panel that launches the server. A hidden -players argument can make a correctly edited cluster.ini appear ineffective. Record the current launch command so you can tell whether the process is using the file value or an override.
Keep a small backup
Make a copy of the Master cluster.ini before editing. The backup gives you a known-good version if a typo, formatting change, or panel synchronization step causes an unexpected result. Do not edit a secondary shard copy as a workaround; it cannot replace the Master setting.
Step-by-step: set max_players in cluster.ini
1. Open the Master file
Locate the cluster’s cluster.ini and open it with a plain-text editor. The file must be the one belonging to the Master shard. Avoid rich-text editors that may insert formatting characters.

2. Find or create the [GAMEPLAY] section
Search for the section header exactly as written:
[GAMEPLAY]
Within that section, find the existing max_players line. If it is absent, add the setting under the header rather than placing it in an unrelated section.
3. Enter the desired value
Use the documented key and an integer value:
max_players = 24
The spaces around the equals sign follow Klei’s documented format. Replace 24 with your chosen cap. Do not put the value in quotes, append player names, or create multiple competing max_players lines.
4. Save without changing the file type
Save the file as cluster.ini, preserving its plain-text format and filename. If your editor offers an encoding or file-type choice, do not convert it into a word-processing document.
5. Restart and allow the configuration to load
Start the dedicated server again using its normal procedure. The restart is required because the running process does not automatically reread this setting after you save the file.
Using -players N at launch
Klei’s command-line guide describes -players N as the option to “Set the maximum number of players that will be allowed to join the game.” Replace N with an integer from 1 through 64:

-players 32
Place the option in the same launch command or startup configuration that starts your dedicated server. The exact executable, wrapper, service syntax, and quoting depend on how your server is deployed, so add the argument to the existing command rather than replacing the command with an unverified example.
Why the command-line value can surprise you
-players N overrides [GAMEPLAY] / max_players in cluster.ini. For example, a file containing max_players = 16 still results in a 32-player cap if the process is launched with -players 32. Conversely, removing the argument exposes the value stored in the file again after the next restart.
When a launch override is useful
- Temporary events: run a larger or smaller session without permanently editing the cluster file.
- Automation: let a script choose a cap for a particular scheduled instance.
- Testing: compare startup behavior with different caps while keeping the saved configuration unchanged.
Because the argument applies at launch, changing it requires restarting the process that receives it. Editing the file while leaving the same overridden command in place will not change the active cap.

How to verify which value is active
- Stop the server and confirm that the Master
cluster.inicontains the intended[GAMEPLAY]value. - Inspect the startup configuration for
-players. If it is present, treat that number as authoritative for this launch. - Restart the dedicated server after making the final change.
- Have players join until the configured cap is reached. A player who leaves should free a connection slot, while a whitelist reservation can keep a slot unavailable to an unreserved player.
- If the observed cap differs from the intended value, stop the server again and follow the troubleshooting branches below rather than editing random shard files.
This verification distinguishes a configuration problem from a reservation effect: a lower number of ordinary joiners may be expected when reserved slots consume part of the maximum.

The server still stops at six players
- Confirm that the edited file is the Master shard’s
cluster.ini, not a secondary shard copy. - Check that the line is inside
[GAMEPLAY]and uses the exact keymax_players. - Search the launch command or service definition for
-players 6. That argument overrides the file. - Stop and restart the server after correcting the value; a live process will continue using its loaded configuration.
The file value looks right, but a different cap is active
The most likely explanation is a launch override. Remove or change the -players N argument, or deliberately set it to the desired number, then restart. If a hosting panel generates the command automatically, edit the panel’s player-limit field or startup arguments instead of repeatedly changing the file that the panel may overwrite.

Changing a secondary shard had no effect
That behavior is expected for this setting. Return to the Master shard’s cluster.ini and change [GAMEPLAY] max_players there. Klei marks the option as Master-cluster-only.
Fewer unreserved players can join than the cap suggests
Review whitelist reservations. Reserved slots count toward the configured maximum, so a cap of 16 does not guarantee 16 ordinary, non-reserved connections at the same time.
The launch option is rejected or behaves unexpectedly
Use an integer in the documented 1–64 range and check that the argument is attached to the actual server-launch command. A wrapper may accept its own options but fail to pass unknown arguments through to the dedicated-server process. Remove duplicate player arguments so there is one unambiguous value.
The change disappears after a restart
Look for an automated deployment step, hosting panel synchronization, or startup script that rewrites cluster.ini. Compare the file immediately before launch with the file after shutdown, and check whether a persistent -players argument is restoring another value at startup. Keep the backup until the configuration survives a complete stop-and-start cycle.
Choosing a practical cap
| Target cap | What it means operationally | Configuration approach |
|---|---|---|
| 1–6 | Small private sessions; six is not a special technical ceiling. | Set the chosen integer in the Master file or pass it with -players. |
| 7–16 | Above the commonly encountered six-player setup and within the settings guide’s listed default of 16. | Use a persistent max_players value unless a launch script must vary it. |
| 17–64 | Larger simultaneous sessions covered by Klei’s documented command-line range. | Use the Master file where supported by your deployment, and verify that no launch override supplies another value; -players N is the explicitly documented 1–64 command-line path. |
The number only controls admission capacity. It does not guarantee that every machine, connection, or world configuration will perform equally well at the upper end. Increase the cap in stages if you are moving from a small private server to a much larger group, and observe whether joining, saving, and administration remain manageable.
