To copy a server’s BepInEx modpack, obtain File Manager, SFTP, FTP, or SSH access from the host or server owner, stop the server if the host recommends it, archive the BepInEx directory, download the archive, and extract it into the correct Valheim installation or mod-manager profile. Preserve BepInEx/plugins, BepInEx/config, and any patchers and supporting files when you want an accurate copy of the server setup.

What you need before downloading
The first requirement is file-level access. An in-game password, Steam friend access, or an administrative password for the Valheim world does not let you browse the server’s disk. Ask the server owner or hosting provider for one of these:

- SFTP credentials, including the hostname, port, username, authentication method, and server-root path.
- FTP credentials, if the provider still offers FTP. SFTP is preferable because it encrypts the transfer.
- SSH access to a Linux server, with permission to read and create archives in the Valheim directory.
Provider interfaces differ. A panel may call the relevant setting Modding Framework, while another host may expose a BepInEx toggle under startup settings or game configuration. GameServerKings, for example, documents a Modding Framework value of BepInEx. Selecting a framework normally requires a server restart before the expected BepInEx directories appear.
If you only have in-game access, stop here and request file access. There is no client-side command that can retrieve a protected server folder through Valheim itself.

What the BepInEx folder contains
BepInEx is described by the Thunderstore BepInExPack Valheim page as “a general purpose framework for Unity modding.” The Valheim pack adds scripts for the game and dedicated server. A normal manual installation places these items in the Valheim game directory:
BepInEx/, the framework directory.winhttp.dll, the loader component used beside the game executable.doorstop_config.ini, the loader configuration file.
On a server that has started BepInEx, inspect the following paths:

The server root is the directory in which the Valheim dedicated-server executable and startup script live. Do not place a second BepInEx directory inside the existing one. The correct result is normally server-root/BepInEx, not server-root/BepInEx/BepInEx.
Choose the right copy scope
Decide whether you need a complete runtime copy or only the mod files before making an archive. This prevents missing dependencies and avoids sharing files that should remain private.

Copying a BepInEx folder is not automatically the same as exporting a Thunderstore-compatible mod-manager profile. A manager may also track a manifest, dependency metadata, or profile-specific settings. The folder is still the authoritative runtime material on the server, but a clean player profile may require installing the same dependencies and versions through the manager.
Step-by-step: archive and download through a hosting panel
- Ask for the panel address and credentials. Confirm that your account can read the game files and create or download archives. A panel login that can start and stop the server may not include File Manager access.
- Stop the server if the host recommends stopping it before file operations. Plugins can write configuration or data while the server is running. Copying during a write can produce an incomplete or inconsistent archive.
- Open File Manager and enter the server root. Look for the Valheim executable, startup files, and the
BepInExdirectory. If the panel has a framework selector, verify that BepInEx is enabled and restart as requested by the host. - Inspect the directory tree. Confirm that
BepInEx/pluginsandBepInEx/configexist. Also check forBepInEx/core,BepInEx/patchers, loader files, and any server-specific supporting files. - Create a dated archive. Use the panel’s Archive, Compress, or Create ZIP function. A useful name is
BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD.zip. Preserve the top-levelBepInExdirectory in the archive rather than selecting only loose files. - Remove private material before sharing. Review configuration files and logs for credentials, webhook URLs, administrator identifiers, or private addresses. Keep a private full backup and make a sanitized sharing archive if necessary.
- Download the archive. Select the ZIP and use the panel’s Download button. Leave the server stopped until the operation is complete if the provider advises that approach.
- Verify the download locally. Open the archive and confirm that its first directory is
BepInEx, with the expectedpluginsandconfigsubdirectories. An archive containing only an empty parent directory is not a usable modpack.
Exact button names and whether a panel permits recursive downloads are provider-specific. If no archive function exists, use the panel’s multi-select download feature if available, or switch to SFTP.

SFTP client method
- Install an SFTP client and enter the host, port, username, and authentication details supplied by the server owner. Do not guess the server-root path; providers often place game files under a customer-specific directory.
- Navigate to the Valheim server root and locate
BepInEx. - Download the directory recursively to a local folder. Preserve capitalization and the directory hierarchy.
- If the client supports remote compression, create the archive on the server first and download one ZIP file. This is usually faster and less error-prone than transferring hundreds of small files.
- If you downloaded an uncompressed directory, create a local ZIP while standing in the folder that contains
BepInEx. For example, from a shell where the directory is present, a conventional command iszip -r BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD.zip BepInEx.
SSH shell method
Use SSH only when the owner has granted shell access and you understand the host’s permissions. First change to the server root, then create an archive without changing the relative paths:
zip -r BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD.zip BepInExIf the system does not have the zip utility, the administrator may use an equivalent TAR archive command. Download the resulting archive through SFTP. Do not run commands as root merely to bypass a permission error; ask the host to grant read access or create the archive for you.

SSH availability, archive utilities, transfer ports, and recursive-download permissions vary by provider. A failed command does not mean the modpack is absent; it may indicate that your account cannot execute shell commands.
Install the copy on another dedicated server
- Back up the destination server’s existing files and stop it according to the destination host’s instructions.
- Install or enable the Valheim BepInEx package supported by that host. The community Valheim pack expects its contents in the Valheim game directory.
- Extract the archive into the server root. The resulting path should be
server-root/BepInEx/plugins, not a nested duplicate such asserver-root/BepInEx-modpack-YYYY-MM-DD/BepInEx/plugins. - Copy loader files such as
winhttp.dllanddoorstop_config.inibeside the Valheim executable when the destination uses a manual installation. If the host manages these files, use its documented startup configuration instead. - Install the same plugin dependencies and versions. A copied configuration file does not install a missing dependency.
- On Linux, use the BepInEx startup script instead of the vanilla script. The documented script is
start_server_bepinex.sh; it must be made executable, configured, and run in place of the standard server script. - Start the server and inspect the console and
BepInEx/LogOutput.log. Confirm that BepInEx bootstraps and that each expected plugin loads without an error.
Never assume that two hosts use identical executable paths, launch arguments, environment variables, or permissions. The archive transfers mod files and settings; it does not reproduce the destination host’s startup service or panel configuration.
Install the files for a player’s PC
Steam PC is the platform assumed by the community Valheim modding guidance. For a manual client installation, extract the supported BepInEx pack into the Valheim game folder so that BepInEx, winhttp.dll, and doorstop_config.ini sit beside the game executable. Official BepInEx documentation says that running the game once after extraction creates BepInEx/config and BepInEx/LogOutput.log.
- Install the same BepInEx pack and loader version used by the server’s supported setup.
- Place the copied plugins, configs, and patchers into the client’s BepInEx directory, or import them into the mod manager profile directory used for that installation.
- Do not overwrite a working profile without backing it up. Rename the existing
BepInExdirectory or use a separate profile so you can roll back. - Launch Valheim once and check the client log for loader and plugin errors.
- Connect only after the client has the exact versions required by the server.
A server-only plugin may not belong on a client, and a client-only cosmetic plugin may not belong on the server. If you distribute files to friends, identify which files are required on both sides instead of handing out the entire server directory indiscriminately.

Match mod categories, dependencies, and versions
The practical distinction is between client-only, client-and-server, and server-only mods:
- Client-only: visual, interface, or local convenience changes that do not alter the shared world. These generally belong only in the player’s profile.
- Client-and-server: item, recipe, creature, progression, and other gameplay-changing mods. The server and every participating client generally need matching files and versions.
- Server-only: administration or server-side behavior that does not require a matching client component. The mod’s documentation determines whether this classification applies.
Matching the folder name is not enough. Compare plugin filenames, dependency versions, configuration files, and the BepInEx framework version. A mod manager can resolve client dependencies, but it cannot bypass server permissions or install files on a remote server without access.
A mismatch can produce a version-mismatch kick, missing items, failed recipes, or a connection that reaches the server and then disconnects. When that happens, compare the server archive with each player’s profile and reinstall the exact versions rather than adding random updates one at a time.

- Check that
BepInExis beside the dedicated-server executable. - Confirm that
BepInEx/pluginscontains the expected plugin files and is not one directory too deep. - Confirm that
BepInEx/configcontains the intended settings. - Start with the BepInEx-aware script or host option, not the vanilla startup path.
- Read the console during startup for loader failures, missing dependencies, permission errors, and plugin exceptions.
- Open
BepInEx/LogOutput.logafter startup and search for each important plugin name. - Test with one administrator before inviting the full group.
If the log is not created, BepInEx may not have been extracted into the game root, the loader files may be missing, or the server may be launching through the wrong script. If the log exists but a plugin is absent, check its filename, dependency requirements, and whether the host’s panel has installed a separate managed copy.

Troubleshoot common download and installation failures

Steam, Microsoft Store, and Xbox limitations
The documented workflow targets Steam PC installations. Community guidance describes Microsoft Store and Game Pass installations as difficult to mod, and Xbox clients cannot load BepInEx client mods. A server archive can therefore be correct while a particular player’s platform still cannot use the client portion of the modpack.
Confirm the game edition for every participant before spending time synchronizing files. Steam PC players can generally use a supported BepInEx installation or mod-manager profile. Microsoft Store and Xbox users may be limited to joining only when the server’s mod set does not require client-side BepInEx, if the specific mod permits that arrangement.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use SFTP instead of unencrypted FTP when both are available.
- Give helpers a read-only account when the host supports it.
- Do not publish administrator passwords, webhook URLs, tokens, private IP addresses, or private logs inside a shared archive.
- Date every backup and keep the original archive unchanged so you can identify which versions players received.
- Record the BepInEx pack version, plugin versions, and any host-specific startup setting next to the archive.
- Retest after changing one mod or configuration at a time, especially on a live world.
- Keep a known-good archive before updating a gameplay mod; restoring it is faster than reconstructing a working combination from memory.
Hosting panels rename fields and paths, and their ZIP/TAR controls, SSH availability, and recursive-download policies are provider-specific. The reliable invariant is the directory layout: a usable copy has the required BepInEx files in the server root, the plugins and configurations in their expected subdirectories, and a startup path that actually loads BepInEx.
What to send friends who need to join
For a modded Valheim server, give friends a clear installation target rather than an unexplained server backup. State whether they should use a mod-manager profile or a manual Steam installation, identify the required BepInEx pack, and provide the exact plugin and dependency versions. Include config when the server’s settings affect gameplay, and include patchers when the copied plugins require them. Do not send private logs or server credentials.
After each player installs the files, compare the profile against the dated server archive. The first connection test should verify that the player can load into the world, see expected items and recipes, and remain connected without a version-mismatch kick. If one player fails while others succeed, compare that player’s plugin list and versions before changing the server.
