Change Sponge’s plugin search path by editing plugins-dir inside the sponge { general { } } block of global.conf, then restart the server. The exact default folder depends on your Sponge API version, and Mixin-based plugins remain in mods regardless of this setting.

Identify your Sponge version before moving anything
Sponge has changed its documented default plugin location between API generations, and two Sponge 8 documentation pages describe the default differently. Check the API version shown by your server build or startup log before deciding which folder is currently active. Also note whether you are running SpongeForge or SpongeVanilla, because older reports suggest their handling of path variables was not always identical.

- API 7 and earlier: the Sponge 8 quick-start material describes
/modsas the plugin location for these APIs. Sponge 7.4.0 configuration documentation describes the default extra plugin directory as${CANONICAL_MODS_DIR}/plugins, normally themods/pluginsdirectory. - API 8 and later: the Sponge 8 quick start says the default is
/plugins. Another Sponge 8 installation page says plugins can be placed in/mods/plugins/or in a custom directory configured withplugins-dir.
Because those Sponge 8 pages conflict, do not infer the active path from the API number alone. The setting in your server’s own global.conf, together with the startup log and the folders that contain your JAR files, is the authoritative check for that installation.
What plugins-dir changes
plugins-dir tells Sponge about an additional directory in which it should search for ordinary Sponge plugin JARs. In the 7.4.0 documentation, the value may be relative to the server’s execution root or may be an absolute path. A hosting-guide example points it at a folder in the game root:

The documented default in the 7.4.0 configuration reference is ${CANONICAL_MODS_DIR}/plugins, which places the extra directory below the canonical mods directory. You can instead use an explicit path when you need the directory somewhere else, for example:

- Stop the server completely. Do not edit the file while the server is writing configuration or loading plugins. A clean shutdown prevents a running process from overwriting your change or leaving plugin data in use.
- Make a backup. Copy the current
global.confand record the existing plugin folder. If the new path fails, restoring the original file and JAR locations gives you a quick rollback. - Open the global configuration. For Sponge 8, the file is created at
config/sponge/global.confin the server directory. Older or differently packaged builds may use an equivalent Sponge global-configuration file, so confirm the filename supplied by your build rather than creating a second file with a similar name. - Find the nested configuration block. Locate
sponge {, thengeneral {inside it. Search the file forplugins-dirso you edit the existing key instead of adding a duplicate. If the key is commented out, remove the comment marker and retain only one active value. - Set the target path. Replace the old value with a relative path or an absolute path. A game-root directory uses the documented variable form:

}- Save the HOCON file. Preserve the braces, quotation marks and indentation. A missing brace or an unmatched quote can prevent Sponge from reading the global configuration at startup.
- Create the destination directory. Create the folder before launching the server. The path must be relative to the server’s execution root when you use a relative value; do not assume it is relative to
config/sponge. - Move ordinary plugin JARs. Move the plugin files from the old location into the new one. Move only the JARs that are ordinary Sponge plugins; leave any files that belong to the server, Forge, or a plugin’s separate data directory where that software expects them.
- Start the server and watch the startup log. Look for the normal plugin discovery and enable messages. A plugin that appears in the old path but not the new one usually indicates a path typo, an unreadable directory, a malformed configuration file, or a JAR that is actually a Mixin-based plugin.
A full restart is the safer way to apply the change. Sponge’s configuration documentation also describes reloading the global configuration with /sponge reload -g, but a reload does not replace the operational safety of stopping the server before moving files. Use the reload only when you understand how your build handles plugin discovery and have a current backup.

Choosing a relative path or an absolute path
Relative paths
A relative value keeps the server self-contained and is convenient when the whole server directory is moved or copied together. The 7.4.0 documentation describes the value as relative to the execution root. For example, a value such as plugins refers to a directory named plugins below that root. This is different from a path relative to config/sponge; placing the directory beside the configuration file does not make it the target automatically.
Canonical Sponge variables
The documented examples use ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR} and ${CANONICAL_MODS_DIR}. The first points at the game directory, while the second identifies the canonical mods directory used by the server. These variables make a configuration portable within a standard layout, but their behavior should be verified on the exact platform and build you run.
Absolute paths
An absolute path is useful when plugins are stored on a separate volume, shared storage location, or controlled deployment directory. It also removes ambiguity about the execution root. The trade-off is portability: copying the server to another host or changing the mount point requires another edit to global.conf.

What must stay in mods
plugins-dir does not relocate every kind of Sponge extension. Mixin-based plugins must remain inside the mods folder, even when ordinary plugin JARs are discovered from a custom directory. If a Mixin plugin is moved solely because its filename looks like another plugin, it may not load, and the server can fail during early initialization.
Separate plugin configuration files are also controlled independently. The plugin directory tells Sponge where to find plugin JARs; it does not move the configuration directory. The third-party configuration guidance identifies config-dir as the setting for the default /config location. Change that setting separately only when you intentionally want to relocate configuration files.
SpongeForge and SpongeVanilla considerations
The setting is intended to be used by Sponge servers, but platform packaging and version matter. Sponge 8 documentation covers both SpongeForge and SpongeVanilla and describes plugin placement for each. A SpongeVanilla GitHub issue titled “Support changing plugin directory using plugins-dir configuration option” records an earlier request for this behavior. A separate report from the 6.0 era said SpongeVanilla did not read a ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR} value while SpongeForge did. That report is not confirmation of current behavior, so treat it as a compatibility warning rather than a present-day rule.

If a custom directory works on one platform but not the other, test with an explicit absolute path first. Confirm the exact API and build, check the startup log for configuration errors, and only then try a canonical variable. Do not conclude that the key is universally broken from a result observed on an old build.

Verify that Sponge is using the new folder
Verification should be done after a clean restart, not merely by checking that the directory exists.
- Confirm that the JARs are physically in the directory named by
plugins-dirand are no longer being loaded from the old directory. - Read the startup log for configuration parsing errors, path errors, and plugin discovery messages.
- Check that each expected ordinary plugin reaches its normal enabled state. A JAR can be found but still fail because of an incompatible API, a missing dependency, or a malformed plugin descriptor.
- Leave Mixin-based JARs in
modsand verify them separately during the early startup phase. - If the server creates a new empty default directory, compare that behavior with your API version’s documented default. The Sponge 8 pages disagree about whether that default is
/pluginsor/mods/plugins, so the generated path is useful evidence for your build.
Troubleshooting plugins that do not load

Restart, reload, and rollback strategy
A restart gives Sponge a clean initialization sequence and is the recommended method after changing plugin placement. It also makes it easier to distinguish a directory problem from a plugin that fails during a live reload. The documented reload command is /sponge reload -g; regard it as an alternative for re-reading global configuration, not as a guarantee that every plugin will be unloaded and rediscovered safely.

If the new arrangement causes errors, stop the server, restore the backed-up global.conf, return the JARs to their previous folder, and start again. Once the original layout works, make one change at a time: first set an explicit path, then test the restart, and only afterward switch to a canonical variable if portability is important.
A practical layout example
Suppose the server’s game root is the directory represented by ${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR}, and you want ordinary plugins in a top-level plugins folder instead of under mods. The sequence is:
- Stop the server and back up
config/sponge/global.conf. - Create the game-root
pluginsdirectory. - Set the nested value to
"${CANONICAL_GAME_DIR}/plugins". - Move ordinary Sponge plugin JARs into that directory.
- Leave Mixin-based plugins in
mods. - Restart and confirm discovery in the startup log.
For an API 7 installation that follows the 7.4.0 default, leaving plugins-dir at ${CANONICAL_MODS_DIR}/plugins preserves the conventional mods/plugins arrangement. For an API 8 installation, compare the generated or documented default in your build before moving files, because the Sponge 8 installation and quick-start pages do not state the same default.
