Discord does not have a normal text-color button for message bodies. You cannot use an HTML-style <span>, a [color=red] tag, or an official Markdown command to make selected words red, blue, or green in an ordinary message. On Discord’s desktop app or website, the most controllable workaround is an ansi fenced code block. It can make text appear colored, but the result is still a monospace, boxed code block—not normal rich text. Mobile viewers may see the same message without its colors.
If you meant your username, display name, Discord theme, or a bot announcement accent instead, those have separate solutions covered below.

What Discord can and cannot color
Discord’s official formatting supports Markdown styles such as bold, italics, underline, strikethrough, spoilers, quotes, and code blocks. Its Markdown documentation does not document a normal message-body color feature, and Discord’s developer reference does not provide an HTML-like color tag for ordinary messages.

- Username color: Controlled by server roles. This changes the color of your name, not the words in your messages.
- Display-name color: Nitro’s Display Name Styles can style your display name, but not message text.
- Discord interface color: Themes and custom themes change how Discord looks for you locally. They do not change what other users see.
- Bot or webhook color: An embed can have a colored accent bar, but that is different from coloring ordinary message text.
The fastest method: an ANSI-colored code block
ANSI is a set of terminal-style control sequences. Discord can currently render some of those sequences when they are placed inside a fenced code block whose language label is ansi. This is best treated as a renderer workaround rather than a clearly documented, user-facing Discord text-color feature. Current practical guides report the most dependable results on the desktop app and in a web browser.

Step-by-step instructions
- Open Discord on desktop or in a browser. Use the Discord desktop client or Discord in your browser first. Mobile clients can send code blocks, but ANSI color rendering is not dependable on iOS or Android.
- Open the DM, group chat, or server channel where you want to post the message.
- Start the block with three backticks followed immediately by
ansi. The opening line should be```ansi, with lowercaseansiand no space between the backticks and the label. - Insert a real ANSI escape character before the text you want to color. The sequence for red text is conceptually
[ESC][31m. - Reset the formatting after the colored text with
[ESC][0m. This prevents subsequent text from inheriting the same color or style. - Close the code block with three backticks on their own line.
- Send the message and test it. Check the result on the clients your audience actually uses before relying on color to communicate important information.
Example: red text
The following shows the structure using [ESC] as a visible placeholder:
```ansi
[ESC][31mThis is red[ESC][0m
```
Important: [ESC] is not literal text to type or paste. It represents the invisible Unicode escape character U+001B. Typing ESC, ^[, ␛, or the visible characters u001b will not activate ANSI formatting in Discord’s message composer.
Example: several colors in one block
```ansi
[ESC][31mRed[ESC][0m [ESC][32mGreen[ESC][0m [ESC][33mYellow[ESC][0m [ESC][34mBlue[ESC][0m
```
To create a working message, replace each [ESC] placeholder with the actual U+001B character. Because that character is invisible and awkward to enter manually, the practical options are to copy a complete block from a current ANSI generator such as MarkdownTools’ Discord colored-text tool, generate it with a script, or have a bot/webhook produce it. Copy the entire block, including the opening ```ansi and closing backticks.
Why the reset code matters
ANSI formatting remains active until another ANSI instruction changes or resets it. For example, this sequence colors only the word Success:
[ESC][1;32mSuccess[ESC][0m — the operation completed.
Without [ESC][0m, the rest of the code block may remain bold and green. Put a reset after each separately colored span when the message switches between styles.
ANSI color and style codes for Discord
The basic ANSI palette uses Select Graphic Rendition codes. The names below are approximate: Discord’s actual shades can change with the client, renderer, and light or dark theme. These are not fixed HEX colors, and this workaround does not provide a normal arbitrary-color picker.

Combining codes

These basic codes are the safest baseline. ANSI references may also list bright colors, 256-color modes, RGB values, blinking, italics, and other terminal features, but you should not assume that every one will render consistently in Discord. The practical Discord workaround is a limited terminal-style palette, not full HEX or gradient control for message text.

An easier fallback: syntax-highlighted code blocks
If you only need a quick visual emphasis and do not want to deal with an invisible ESC character, Discord’s syntax highlighting can simulate a few colors. These tricks are easier to type but give you much less control.
diff: green- and red-looking lines
```diff
+green-looking text
-red-looking text
```
The plus and minus signs are part of the effect and normally remain visible. This is useful for showing additions and removals, but it is not a way to select arbitrary words in a sentence.
Other commonly used language labels
```fix
yellow-looking text
```
```ini
[blue-looking text]
```
```css
[orange-looking text]
```
These results come from Discord’s syntax-highlighting implementation and the grammar associated with each language label. The characters and context matter: brackets, punctuation, quoted strings, keywords, and other tokens may receive different styling or remain visible. The exact result can also vary by client and theme. Guides such as Dot Esports’ examples show the common patterns, but syntax highlighting should be described as a visual code-block trick—not native text coloring.
Use ANSI when you need deliberate multiple colored spans without extra symbols. Use diff, fix, ini, or css when speed matters more than precise appearance.
Does colored text work on iPhone and Android?
Sometimes, but do not rely on it. You can type and send a fenced code block from a phone, and generic code blocks are supported on mobile. ANSI color and syntax-highlighting colors, however, may be missing, reduced to plain text, or rendered differently on iOS and Android.
| Client | ANSI color | Syntax highlighting | Best practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord desktop app | Generally works | Generally works | Best target for colored code blocks |
| Discord in a browser | Generally works | Generally works | Best target for colored code blocks |
| iOS | May appear plain or inconsistent | Varies by client version | Never make color the only source of meaning |
| Android | May appear plain or inconsistent | Varies by client version | Test on the phones your audience uses |
Discord’s March 6, 2026 patch notes and December 8, 2025 patch notes document fixes involving generic code-block rendering on iOS and Android. They do not promise complete ANSI-color support. Public Discord feedback also includes reports of colored blocks appearing plain white or otherwise unreadable on mobile, including the reports for colored code blocks on mobile and ANSI formatting on mobile. That is evidence of inconsistent behavior, not a permanent statement that every mobile version fails.
For announcements, alerts, or instructions, write the meaning into the message as well: SUCCESS:, WARNING:, or ERROR:. A mobile user should still understand the message if every color disappears.

Server Settings > Roles > select a role > Role Color
The color applies to members assigned to that role in the server. It does not color the body of messages they send. If several roles have colors, the highest-positioned colored role in the server hierarchy generally determines the visible name color. If the selected role does not appear to work, check its position under Discord’s Roles and Permissions guidance.
Role color is a native identity feature, not a substitute for colored message text. It also may have readability implications; Discord provides related controls in its Accessibility settings documentation.

If you meant your display-name color
As of July 21, 2026, Discord’s Display Name Styles feature lets Nitro users customize display-name fonts, colors, and effects. It still does not color the text in their messages.
On desktop or in a browser, open:
User Settings > Profiles > Display Name Styles
On mobile, open the avatar menu, choose Edit Profile, and then open Display Name Styles. Users without Nitro can preview the feature but cannot save the style.
Display-name styles can also look different depending on where Discord shows the name. In messages, only the font may be visible until someone hovers over the name. In servers, a server role color or enhanced role style may take precedence. None of these settings changes ordinary message-body text.
If you meant Discord’s interface colors
Discord’s appearance settings change the interface for the person who changes them. They do not recolor a message for everyone else.
- Desktop and browser: Open User Settings > Appearance.
- Mobile: Open the avatar menu, tap the gear icon, and choose Appearance.
Discord offers built-in themes, while eligible Nitro users can use custom themes with a color picker, HEX entry, gradients, intensity controls, and up to five colors. See Discord’s current theme and appearance instructions for the options available to your account.

Bots and webhooks: colored embeds
For automated announcements, moderation alerts, status updates, and game-server notifications, a bot or webhook can send an embed with a colored accent bar, title, description, fields, and other structured content. Discord documents webhooks and embeds in its webhooks and embeds safety guide, while the message API documents the embed color property.
An embed’s color is the accent or side border around the embed. It does not turn the description or field text into arbitrary colored rich text. This approach requires a bot, webhook, or third-party integration, so it is not a manual replacement for a color picker in the message composer.

Ordinary message content has a 2,000-character maximum. ANSI sequences count as part of the submitted message content, so coloring a very long message leaves slightly less room for visible words. The latter is a practical consequence of the API’s content representation rather than a separate ANSI-specific limit; see Discord’s Message resource documentation.
Which method should you use?
| Goal | Best method | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple deliberate colors on desktop | ANSI code block | Requires a real ESC character and produces a monospace block; mobile support is unreliable |

| Colored automated announcement | Bot or webhook embed | Provides a colored accent and structure, but requires an integration |
| Guarantee an exact visual design | Image attachment | Appearance is exact, but the text is not as selectable, searchable, or accessible as real text |
Fixes when the color does not appear
The message shows u001b, ESC, or [ESC]
You pasted visible notation instead of the actual U+001B control character. In program source, u001b can be an escape notation that a programming language converts into the real character. In Discord’s composer, the literal characters u001b do not perform that conversion. Use a generator that inserts the actual character or generate the message in code. The Python Discord guide explains this distinction.
It appears as an ordinary, uncolored code block
Check all of the following:
- The opening fence is exactly three backticks.
- The opening line is exactly
```ansi, preferably lowercase and with no intervening space. - The closing fence contains three backticks on a separate line.
- The copying method did not remove or sanitize the invisible ESC characters.
- You are viewing the result in Discord’s desktop app or browser rather than a mobile client.
If the opening language label is missing or misspelled, Discord may render a generic code block without the intended highlighting. A complete structure looks like this, although the placeholders must be replaced:
```ansi
[ESC][31mRed text[ESC][0m
```
It works on desktop but not on a phone
This is usually a client-compatibility limitation, not proof that your ANSI sequence is invalid. Keep the plain-text meaning in the message, update Discord, and test the exact post on both iOS and Android if the audience is mixed.
Only some words are colored
You are probably using syntax highlighting rather than ANSI. Syntax-highlighting languages color tokens according to a code grammar, so a bracketed value, keyword, quoted string, or punctuation mark may be colored while surrounding prose is not. Use ANSI when you need to control several separate text spans.
The plus, minus, or brackets are visible
That is expected with the easy syntax-highlighting tricks. diff commonly needs + and -, while ini and css examples often use brackets. ANSI avoids those visible markers when it renders correctly.
Later words keep the earlier color
Add [ESC][0m after each colored section. The reset sequence returns the block to its default formatting.
The selected role color is not showing on your username
Check the role hierarchy. Another colored role positioned higher may be taking precedence. You need the appropriate server permissions to change role settings or move roles.
Changing the theme did not change anyone else’s messages
That is normal. Appearance settings are local to your Discord client. They do not modify the message content or force a color on other users’ screens.
Accessibility and reliability advice
Colored text is a fragile way to communicate. Some mobile clients may remove the color, some themes may produce poor contrast, and users with color-vision differences may not distinguish the hues. Discord’s accessibility documentation includes controls related to role-color readability, but no client setting can make an unreliable message-body color workaround universal.
- Pair colors with explicit labels such as ERROR, WARNING, and SUCCESS.
- Use bold, underline, headings, bullets, or emojis as additional signals.
- Test ANSI messages in both light and dark themes.
- Check the result on desktop, iOS, and Android before using it for alerts.
- Prefer plain text or a bot/webhook embed for server-wide information that everyone must understand.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a HEX color such as #ff0000 for ordinary Discord message text?
No. Discord does not provide a normal HEX color picker for message-body text. ANSI code blocks offer a limited terminal-style palette, and the rendered shades depend on the client and theme.
Why does Discord show the characters instead of coloring my message?
The message probably contains literal text such as u001b, ESC, or [ESC] instead of the real U+001B escape character. Use a generator that inserts the actual control character or create the message in code.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does Discord Nitro let me change the color of my messages?
No. Nitro can provide Display Name Styles and custom appearance themes, but those affect your display name or your local Discord interface. They do not color the body of ordinary messages.
What is the most reliable way to send a colored announcement?
For manual posts, use an ANSI code block and include text labels so the message remains understandable without color. For automated announcements, a bot or webhook embed is usually more controllable because it can add a colored accent and structured fields.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You cannot directly color normal Discord message text. On desktop or in a browser, use a real U+001B escape character inside a lowercase ansi fenced code block, and reset the formatting after each colored section. Treat mobile color rendering as unreliable, and always include words or symbols that preserve the message’s meaning without color.
