CrossOver is a free cross-platform desktop overlay that places a customizable crosshair above a game or other windowed application. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, includes more than 530 built-in sights, accepts PNG, SVG, and GIF images, and can move between monitors. It works best in windowed and borderless-windowed modes—not every fullscreen mode—and Vulkan titles, Linux compositor setups, and individual anti-cheat policies can still prevent it from working.
That makes CrossOver especially appealing if your game has no useful reticle, you want the same custom sight in several games, or you use macOS or Linux. It is less suitable if you require guaranteed exclusive-fullscreen support, formal commercial support, or a reticle that automatically reacts to weapons, recoil, spread, ammunition, or scope state.

CrossOver Crosshair at a glance
CrossOver is developed by Lacy Morrow. It is not the similarly named CodeWeavers CrossOver, which is a commercial compatibility product for running some Windows applications on macOS and Linux. The CrossOver discussed here is a crosshair utility available from the official GitHub repository and official product site.

What CrossOver actually does
CrossOver creates a floating, transparent overlay window and positions a visual reticle over another application. You choose a built-in sight or import an image, place it where you want it, and lock the interface before playing. The same basic approach can work over ordinary desktop software, provided the target application is windowed and allows the overlay to remain visible.
This is different from an in-game mod. According to the project documentation, CrossOver does not modify game files, read game memory, or inject code into the game. It draws a visual marker externally. That distinction can reduce technical risk, but it does not create a universal anti-cheat exemption: a publisher or security system can still prohibit or detect external overlay software.

The game-aware limitation is an inference from the documented feature set: CrossOver offers manual settings, presets, imported images, hotkeys, and optional mouse-button behavior, but does not claim to synchronize its reticle with each game’s internal state.
Price, platforms, version, and license
The project and product site describe CrossOver as free to download and use without an account. The site also says there are no ads or tracking, and the repository includes donation links. Free use should not be confused with a standard MIT license, however; the licensing information is currently inconsistent.

The release distinction matters. The release page is the appropriate place to find a tagged downloadable build. The 3.4.2 package version and a May 16, 2026 entry in the changelog describe the current development branch, not necessarily a new stable release. The repository’s license file should be read directly if you plan to redistribute, modify, or use CrossOver within a commercial project.
The product site lists older operating-system claims such as Windows 7 and later and macOS 10.10 and later, while the repository includes more cautious, version-specific notes. Choose the release artifact for your architecture and check the current release documentation rather than treating every historical platform claim as a guarantee.

How to download and install CrossOver
Use the official GitHub releases page or the project’s official site. Do not obtain an installer from a random download mirror. The Windows installer and portable builds are unsigned according to the project’s installation notes, so browser and operating-system warnings are possible.
Windows
- Download the Windows installer
.exe, portable build, or Microsoft Store version from the official sources. - Run the installer, or extract and launch the portable build.
- If Windows displays Windows protected your PC, select More info, then Run anyway only after confirming that the file came from the official project source.
- Launch CrossOver and continue to the setup steps below.
The Microsoft Store package follows the normal Store installation process and may be preferable to users who want the Store distribution rather than an unsigned standalone download.
macOS
- Download the

The project notes that GNOME/Mutter or another suitable compositor may work better in cases where KDE Plasma’s KWin does not render the overlay correctly. Compositor replacement commands described in the repository can disrupt the desktop session, so treat them as advanced troubleshooting rather than installation instructions.
Set up and lock your crosshair
Once CrossOver is running, the normal workflow is:
- Click the bullseye control to open the crosshair chooser.
- Select a built-in sight, or drag a PNG, SVG, or GIF file onto the CrossOver window.
- Open the gear settings and adjust size, opacity, color, SVG fill, and reticle options.
- Drag the overlay to the desired position.
- Double-click the bullseye to center it on the current display.
- Use the keyboard nudge shortcuts for pixel-level positioning.
- Lock the overlay before launching or returning to the game.
Locking hides or toggles the settings interface while leaving the crosshair in place. Unlock CrossOver before changing the sight, moving it, or quitting the application. If you cannot see the controls, use the settings/lock shortcut listed below.
Preset and custom-image options
The preset library includes categories such as scope reticles, dots, chevrons, tactical sights, MLG, Kenney, and Diatoku designs. The image-import route is useful when you already have a preferred reticle: drag the supported PNG, SVG, or GIF onto the application, then tune its size, opacity, and placement.
Additional documented controls include:
- Crosshair size and opacity.
- Color selection and SVG fill customization.
- An independent central reticle or dot.
- Reticle shape and color.
- Light and dark mode.
- Application accent colors.
- Color and contrast controls intended to assist colorblind users.
The project does not provide a complete public design specification for every custom-image dimension or SVG limitation. If an imported image looks wrong, start with a simple supported file, confirm its opacity, and adjust its size and position rather than relying on an undocumented image size.

Windows and Linux use Ctrl + Alt + Shift as the default modifier combination. macOS substitutes Option for Alt.

All shortcuts except reset can be remapped or cleared in Settings. Select the keybind input, enter a new combination, or press Backspace to disable the shortcut. If a shortcut does nothing, a desktop environment or another application may already be claiming that key combination.
Multi-monitor and advanced features
Move or duplicate the crosshair
Use the center shortcut to center the crosshair on the active display, or use the move-to-next-display shortcut to cycle through connected monitors. CrossOver also documents duplicate or “shadow” crosshairs, with up to 14 advertised. Duplicate windows share the main window’s settings, do not support every feature—including mouse-follow—and do not save their state independently. They close when the main window closes.
Hide the crosshair while aiming down sights
The Hide on ADS setting binds a mouse button so the crosshair disappears while that button is held. This is a manually bound input behavior, not automatic detection of every game’s aim-down-sights state. It may depend on global-input support and operating-system permissions, so test it before relying on it.

Startup, updates, and hardware acceleration
CrossOver documents a start-on-boot option and automatic updates enabled by default on Windows and macOS. The project says update communication goes to GitHub. Hardware acceleration is also configurable; disabling it is one of the project’s recommended tests when a game stutters or loses performance.
Does CrossOver work in fullscreen?
The word fullscreen hides the most important compatibility distinction:

CrossOver’s “any screen” style of marketing should therefore be read as “many windowed applications and display setups,” not as a promise that every rendering path will show the overlay. A game that works in borderless mode may fail as soon as exclusive fullscreen is selected.
Experimental Windows workaround
The repository documents this AutoHotKey workaround for some Windows exclusive-fullscreen cases:
Home::Winset, Alwaysontop, , CrossOverAfter running the script, the documented procedure is to press Space in-game to bring the overlay forward. The project warns that this can cause FPS problems and does not work with every title. Treat it as an experiment, not a supported universal fix.

The following results come from the project’s community-reported compatibility table. They are version-sensitive and can change after a game update, graphics-driver change, launcher change, or anti-cheat update. They are useful starting points—not a certified compatibility matrix.

Reported failures and restrictions
- Cyberpunk 2077: Vulkan is listed as unsupported.
- Rainbow Six Siege: Vulkan is listed as unsupported.
- RedM: listed as not working.
- Metro Exodus Gold Edition: no documented working mode in the table.
- Escape from Tarkov: the game is reported not to start while CrossOver is running; close CrossOver before launching it.
- Sea of Thieves: the repository historically labels use “BANNABLE—do not use,” but the current publisher policy is more nuanced, as explained below.
For an unlisted game, test the exact combination of game version, launcher, graphics API, display mode, operating system, and anti-cheat version. A compatibility report from another computer is not proof that the same setup will work for you.
Is CrossOver safe, detectable, or bannable?
There are four separate questions here:
- What does the software technically do? The project describes it as an external overlay rather than an injector or memory reader.
- What does the game publisher permit? Rules differ by game and can change.
- What can anti-cheat detect? An external overlay may still be visible to security software even if it does not modify game data.
- What happens if the game refuses to launch? Some games can block or reject overlays without that proving the overlay cheated.
The CrossOver README uses strong language describing normal use as not bannable. That is the developer’s product claim, not a universal guarantee. Riot’s Vanguard guidance and third-party application FAQ distinguish approved overlays and tools from external applications that read memory, but they do not endorse every static crosshair utility.
Sea of Thieves illustrates why the qualification matters. Its publisher policy, updated April 9, 2026, says software, monitor features, or physical solutions that display a crosshair are not themselves a bannable offense in Sea of Thieves. It also warns that an external solution could still be flagged by anti-cheat or another security system and that use is at the player’s own risk. That current policy conflicts in tone with the repository’s older “BANNABLE—do not use” warning, so Sea of Thieves players should follow the current publisher policy while treating CrossOver’s specific compatibility warning seriously.

Before using CrossOver in a competitive title, check that game’s current support documentation and code of conduct. If the policy is unclear, the lowest-risk choices are the game’s own reticle, a monitor’s built-in crosshair, or a physical screen feature. Do not assume that “no injection” means “guaranteed safe.”
Privacy and trust considerations
The current README claims that CrossOver has no telemetry and communicates only with GitHub for updates. The repository’s published privacy policy, however, is dated April 11, 2022 and contains broader, generic language saying third-party products may collect error-log data, including device and IP information.
The careful conclusion is that the README claims no telemetry and GitHub-only update traffic, but the older privacy policy is not a complete, independently verified privacy audit. Users with strict privacy requirements should review the current repository and monitor network behavior themselves rather than interpreting the README as proof of zero data collection.

The crosshair does not appear
- Confirm that CrossOver itself is running and that the crosshair has not been hidden.
- Press the settings/lock shortcut to check whether the interface is locked or the overlay is toggled off.
- Test CrossOver over a normal desktop window. If it works there, the game’s display mode or rendering path is likely the issue.
- Change the game to Windowed or Borderless Fullscreen.
- Disable exclusive fullscreen.
- Check whether the game uses Vulkan and appears on the project’s unsupported list.
- On Linux, confirm that a suitable compositor is active and install the documented
libxkbcommonpackage if global input features fail. - On Windows, try the AutoHotKey workaround only as an experimental last resort.
The crosshair disappears after launching the game
This commonly indicates that the game switched into exclusive fullscreen or uses a rendering path that does not preserve the desktop overlay. Return to borderless or windowed mode. If the game supports only exclusive fullscreen, CrossOver may simply be the wrong tool; consider a Game Bar-based or in-game alternative.
The game will not launch
Close CrossOver completely and start the game again. Escape from Tarkov is specifically documented as a title that may not start while CrossOver is running. Repeatedly changing reticle settings will not solve a launcher or anti-cheat refusal.
FPS drops, stutter, or instability appear
CrossOver does not promise zero performance impact in every environment. The project documents reports of FPS drops and recommends this sequence:
- Disable hardware acceleration in CrossOver.
- Disable Hide on ADS.
- Compare performance with CrossOver running and with it fully closed.
- Compare Windowed/Borderless and exclusive fullscreen modes.
- If stuttering occurs with V-Sync, G-Sync, or another adaptive-sync feature, test with adaptive sync disabled.
Historical issue reports include severe stutter and frame-rate instability in some Windows 11 setups, although later comments suggested that Windows or graphics-driver changes improved the problem. The crosshair is on the wrong monitor
Use the center-on-current-display shortcut, or move the crosshair to the next connected display. If you need a reticle on several screens, create a duplicate crosshair. Remember that duplicates share the main window’s settings and are not saved independently.
Hotkeys do nothing
Check that CrossOver is not locked in a way that prevents the expected interface, then review Settings for remapped or disabled keybinds. A desktop environment, accessibility tool, or game may already own the combination. On Linux, install libxkbcommon-x11-0 on Ubuntu/Pop!_OS or libxkbcommon-x11 on Fedora, and verify that the compositor supports the overlay.
The imported image is invisible or looks wrong
Confirm that the file is PNG, SVG, or GIF and that you dragged it onto the CrossOver window. Check opacity, size, color, and SVG fill settings. A transparent image with very faint colors can appear to be missing against a similar game background; test a high-contrast preset to separate an image problem from an overlay problem.

Linux renders the overlay incorrectly
Linux overlay behavior depends on the compositor as well as the package. The project notes possible issues with KWin and recommends checking whether GNOME/Mutter or another compositor behaves better. Do not run desktop compositor replacement commands casually: they can disrupt the session. Start by testing a different package format, confirming the compositor, and installing the documented keyboard-hook dependency.

Crosshair X
Crosshair X is Windows-only and uses the Xbox Game Bar overlay path. Its official site lists Windows 10 and 11 support, one-time purchase pricing, layered reticle customization, and controls for color, opacity, blur, rotation, scale, and position. It may be a better fit when exclusive-fullscreen support through Game Bar matters more than cross-platform availability.
HudSight
HudSight is a paid Windows-focused alternative. Its developer advertises support for DirectX 9–12, OpenGL, and Vulkan, along with built-in sights, custom images, an editor, and several rendering modes including Game Bar, simple overlay, real overlay, and hook modes. The official site advertises a $7 lifetime license. Its support documentation says it normally targets games rather than the desktop or ordinary applications unless Game Bar overlay mode is used.
Crosshair EDGE
Crosshair EDGE targets Windows users who want a more elaborate editor. The developer advertises up to nine independent layers, segment controls, up to 20 preset slots, automatic resolution scaling, multi-monitor support, Steam Workshop and Steam Cloud integration, and a $5.99 Steam price shown on its site. It offers more construction tools than CrossOver, but it is neither free nor cross-platform.
Monitor or in-game reticles
A monitor’s built-in crosshair, the game’s own reticle settings, or an appropriate physical screen marker avoids installing third-party overlay software.
