This is a server-configuration change, not an in-game map-editing action. The exact control-panel labels and accepted world-size values vary by host and game version, so verify those details in the documentation for the server you run.

What changing the world actually does
A dedicated server can load the fixed Navezgane map, a procedurally generated world, a pre-generated map, or an existing world folder. Changing the world means changing which save the server starts. It does not reshape the current map while players are online.
When you generate a new map, the server creates a new save directory under the pattern Saves/[GameWorld]/[GameName]/. The old directory is not merged into the new one. Buildings, containers, quest state, discovered locations, player levels and inventory remain in the old save unless you deliberately keep using that save or move data with a separate, version-compatible process.

Choose the right method

Do not mix these paths accidentally. Uploading a world is not the same as asking the server to generate one, and changing a seed will not import an existing map.
Prepare before editing
- Schedule downtime. Players must be disconnected while the server is stopped and the save is copied.
- Make a complete backup. Download or copy the current save directory, not just the XML file. Include the configuration and any host-specific startup settings so you can roll back.
- Record the current values. Save the old
GameWorld,WorldGenSeed,WorldGenSizeandGameNamesomewhere outside the server directory. - Check access. You need the host’s file manager, FTP/SFTP access, or an administrator control panel that permits server configuration changes.
- Confirm the game version. Host guides cover different releases, and world-size limits have changed between versions. A setting accepted by one release may be rejected or ignored by another.
Step-by-step: generate a new random world
1. Stop the server completely
Use the host panel’s Stop action and wait until the process is no longer running. Do not edit serverconfig.xml while the server is active. A clean shutdown can rewrite configuration values, and a live edit may be overwritten when the process exits or restarts.

Many installations use the stock serverconfig.xml, but a startup command can select a different file, for example with a parameter such as -configfile=myserverconfig.xml. Edit that selected file, not an unused template. Some hosts hide the file behind a control panel; in that case, use the panel’s world settings and look for an option that identifies the save name or configuration profile.
If you are unsure, inspect the startup command or the server’s launch settings, then make one small, identifiable change and verify it after restart. A server that keeps loading the old map is often reading a different configuration than the one you edited.
3. Back up the active save
Copy the current folder represented by Saves/[GameWorld]/[GameName]/ to local storage or a separate backup location. Keep the backup until the new map has been tested and everyone agrees that the reset is permanent. Never rely on a filename-only backup if the host’s panel offers a snapshot or archive of the whole instance.

4. Set the world type to RWG
In the active configuration, set the world key to the random-world-generation value:

<property name='GameWorld' value='RWG' />The documented alternatives include Navezgane, PREGEN, and the name of an existing world folder. Those values do not create a new random map. RWG is the switch that makes the server generate one.
5. Choose a text seed
Set WorldGenSeed to a memorable text value. The seed is used with the world size to determine the generated layout; using the same seed and size should reproduce the same map on a compatible server version. The seed has no effect when GameWorld is not RWG.
<property name='WorldGenSeed' value='Pine-Canyon-2026' />Changing only the seed is not a reliable reset. If a save with the resulting generated name already exists, the server may open that directory instead of creating a fresh one. Change GameName as well.
6. Set a world size only if your version supports it
WorldGenSize controls the generated map dimensions. Published host documentation does not agree on one universal rule: one guide describes a range from 2048 through 16384, while another says the value must be a multiple of 2048 and gives 6144, 8192 and 10240 as examples. Older or alpha-era versions are also reported with narrower choices such as 6000, 8000 or 10000.

Use the values documented for your server build. If your host does not document the key, leave its existing valid value unchanged rather than guessing. A larger map takes more generation time and storage, so allow the first startup to finish before assuming it failed.
<property name='WorldGenSize' value='8192' />The size is combined with the seed when the game determines the internal random-world name. That is another reason to keep a record of both values.
7. Give the save a new GameName
GameName is the save-folder name. Choose a name you have never used on this instance, such as RwgSeason2:
<property name='GameName' value='RwgSeason2' />This is the step that forces a new save directory instead of reopening the previous one. Use simple characters and follow any naming restrictions shown by your host. Do not rename or delete the old save until the new world is confirmed playable.
8. Save the file and restart
Save the XML without changing its surrounding structure, then start the server. The first launch can take longer while the random world is generated. Watch the console or log for completion and for errors about invalid properties, an unavailable world size, or a folder that cannot be written.

Join with a test character before announcing the reset. Check that the map is the expected type, the spawn area loads, terrain and points of interest generate normally, and the server continues running after a second restart.

If the old map still loads
The wrong file was edited
This is the most common explanation when the server ignores GameWorld=RWG. Recheck the launch command for a custom -configfile argument and verify that the panel is not regenerating an XML file from its own settings. Stop the server, edit the active file or panel fields, save, and then start again.
The server reused an existing save
A seed change does not guarantee a reset if the generated world name already exists. Set a new GameName, stop the server, and start again. Look for a newly created directory under the Saves path rather than judging only by the seed shown in a panel.

Check capitalization and spelling. The documented value is RWG. If the configuration contains duplicate entries for the same property, remove the stale duplicate or use the host’s supported editor so only one value is written.
World generation stops or rejects the size
Consult the documentation for the exact server version and host. The published ranges conflict, and older builds may accept only specific increments. Try the host’s known-good default size first, then change one variable at a time. Keep the seed and GameName fixed while testing so you can identify which setting caused the failure.

The server starts but players see missing or damaged terrain
Stop the server and restore the backup if the generated save is incomplete. Confirm that generation finished in the log, that the instance has enough disk space, and that the server and clients are on compatible versions. Do not delete the backup until a clean stop-and-start cycle succeeds.
Keep the old world available
A reset does not require deleting your previous campaign. Leave its save directory untouched and keep a dated archive outside the live instance. To return to it later, stop the server and restore the old combination of GameWorld, GameName and any matching generation settings, or use the host’s documented world-selection control. Restore the entire save directory, not only a single region or player file.
Running two campaigns at once requires separate server instances or a reliable host feature for switching saves. Reusing one GameName for alternating maps makes it easy to load the wrong directory and can overwrite the rollback path.
Upload an existing world instead of generating one
If your goal is to move a map from another machine, do not set RWG and expect the upload to appear. Use the host’s file manager or transfer instructions to upload the complete world folder. Then set GameWorld to the existing world’s folder name and choose the matching GameName expected by that save structure.
Before starting, compare the source and destination game versions, preserve the original folder hierarchy, and back up the destination. An upload can fail when files are incomplete, permissions are wrong, or the world was created by an incompatible release. The host’s transfer documentation is authoritative for its file paths and restart procedure.

Reset checklist
- Tell players the server will be offline and decide whether the old campaign must remain recoverable.
- Stop the server and wait for a confirmed shutdown.
- Back up the complete active save and configuration.
- Identify the configuration file or control-panel profile actually used at startup.
- Set
GameWorldtoRWG. - Enter the desired
WorldGenSeed. - Set a version-supported
WorldGenSize, or retain the known-good value. - Choose a new, unused
GameName. - Save, start the server, and monitor generation logs.
- Join for a test, stop and start once more, and only then reopen the server to the group.
