You cannot replace the seed of a world that has already been generated. The level-seed setting is read when Minecraft creates a world for the first time. To use a different seed, stop the server, back up the existing world, set the new value, and make the server generate a new world. Your old builds, chests, inventories and explored terrain remain in the old world files; they do not move automatically to the new one.

What changing a server seed actually does
A Minecraft seed is an input to world generation. When the server creates a world, it uses the seed together with the game version and generation settings to produce terrain, structures and biome placement. The resulting chunks are then stored as world data on disk.

The server continues loading the already-created world folder, so the landscape you see remains unchanged. A new seed therefore requires a new world save, not just a new line in server.properties.
This distinction matters on a shared server. Replacing the save removes the world that contains players’ bases, farms, item storage, maps and progress unless you retain a backup or deliberately move selected builds. Treat a seed change as a world reset with a rollback option, not as a routine configuration edit.

Decide which outcome you want
Choose your reset method before touching any files. The right choice depends on whether the old world must remain available and whether the server can be offline while you work.

If several people play on the server, announce the reset and record the old world name, seed and backup location. A new seed changes the shared map for everyone, not just the person who edits the configuration.

Prepare safely before changing anything
- Schedule downtime. Stop the server completely before editing files. A running process can write chunks while you are copying or deleting them, leaving an incomplete backup or a partially reset world.
- Make an independent backup. Copy the entire active world directory, including its dimension folders, to storage outside the server’s live directory. Keep the copy until players have confirmed that the new world works.
- Record the current settings. Save the existing
level-name,level-seed, game version, difficulty and any generation-related settings. The same seed can produce different terrain when generation rules or versions differ. - Check available disk space. The new world is generated in addition to the backup when you use a new
level-name. Make sure the host has room for both saves. - Confirm the edition and server software. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use different folder layouts. Paper, Spigot and Purpur also keep the Nether and End in separate directories that must be handled during a full reset.
Do not begin by deleting a folder. First verify that the backup opens as a recognizable world archive and that you know exactly which directory the server is configured to load.
Java Edition: change the seed and generate a new world
The following procedure applies to a self-hosted Java server and to common Java server software that uses server.properties. Hosting panels may present the same files behind different buttons, but the order is the same.
1. Stop the server
Use the host’s Stop control or the server console’s normal shutdown procedure, then wait until the process has fully exited. Do not edit or remove world data while the server is still running.

2. Back up the active world
Locate the directory named by level-name in server.properties and copy it somewhere safe. On a typical Java installation this directory contains the Overworld data and may sit beside separate Nether and End directories. Preserve the whole set so you can roll back completely.
3. Edit level-seed
Open server.properties in a plain-text editor and change the line to the seed you want:
level-seed=your-seed-hereYou may enter a numeric seed or a word. Minecraft converts a word into a deterministic seed value. Leave the value empty for a randomly generated seed:
level-seed=Keep the spelling, capitalization and punctuation exactly as intended. A one-character difference produces a different seed.
4. Choose how the new save will be created
You have two supported ways to make Minecraft stop loading the old save:

- Delete the active world folder. Remove the folder that matches
level-nameafter confirming the backup. The next start finds no save with that name and creates one from the new seed. - Change
level-name. Set it to a new, unused folder name, such assurvival-new. The old folder remains untouched, and the next start creates the new world beside it. This is safer when you may need to compare or restore the previous map.
Changing only level-seed while leaving the old folder in place will not reset anything; the server will simply reopen the existing world.
5. Handle separate dimensions on Paper, Spigot or Purpur
On these server implementations, the Nether and End are stored in separate directories, commonly named world_nether and world_the_end. For a complete reset using the same world name, delete or rename those dimension folders along with the Overworld folder, and keep copies in your backup. If you change level-name to a new name, the server will create the corresponding new Overworld, Nether and End directories for that name; leave the old set in place as your rollback copy.
Removing only the Overworld can leave an old Nether or End available, which means players may still enter a dimension generated from the previous world. Treat all three folders as one world set.
6. Start the server and verify generation
Start the server normally. The first startup can take longer while the new save and its initial chunks are created. Join with an operator or test account and check that the spawn terrain matches the intended seed.

Shut down again, inspect the actual live directory and confirm that the new world name or deletion was applied before trying another start.

Bedrock Edition: replace the world in the worlds directory
Bedrock servers use a different save layout. The principle is unchanged: set the seed, remove the existing save, and let the server create a replacement.
- Stop the Bedrock server completely.
- Back up the complete world directory before deleting anything.
- Open the server’s
worlds/directory. - Find the folder whose name matches the
level-namein the server configuration. Guides commonly show the default name asBedrock level, but use the value configured on your server rather than assuming the default. - Delete that folder, or move it outside the live
worlds/directory as a backup. - Set the new seed in the Bedrock server configuration. Use the numeric or word value you want; leave it blank when you want random generation.
- Start the server and verify the spawn area before inviting players back.
If the old map appears after the restart, the server probably loaded a folder whose name does not match the value you changed, or the old folder was moved somewhere the host automatically restored. Check the configured level-name and the exact directory used by the running instance.
Can you change the seed without losing a world?
Not in place. The old world and the new seed are separate saves. To preserve builds, keep the old world as a backup or as a second save by changing level-name instead of deleting the folder. Players can then move items manually, or an administrator can perform a carefully tested structure or region transfer using tools appropriate to the server version.
A transfer is not a seed change. Imported builds bring blocks and entities from the old world into the new one, but the surrounding terrain, structures and biome layout still come from the new seed. Always work on copies and verify compatibility before modifying either live world.

The old folder was never removed or renamed
This is the most common cause. Editing level-seed does nothing while the server can still find and load the existing save under the configured level-name. Recheck the directory after stopping the server and confirm that the folder name or path really changed.

The wrong server directory was edited
Hosts often have separate installation, backup and live-instance directories. Make sure the server.properties file you edited belongs to the server process you started. Compare its level-name with the folder you changed.
A dimension folder from the previous world remains
On Paper, Spigot and Purpur, an old world_nether or world_the_end can survive an incomplete reset. Remove or rename the matching dimension folders after making a backup, then restart.
The seed value contains an unintended character
Recheck for leading or trailing spaces, copied punctuation and spelling differences. Word seeds are converted from their exact text, so a small change results in another world.
A seam appears between old and new terrain
One third-party guide reports a visible boundary where old and newly generated terrain meet after a partial reset. This is not an established general behavior, but it is a useful warning: do not mix dimension or region folders from different generation runs unless you have tested the result on a disposable copy. A clean reset with a complete backup avoids that uncertainty.
Delete the folder or change level-name?

For most communities, changing level-name first is the safer test. Once the new seed is confirmed and the old map is no longer needed, archive or remove the old save during a separate maintenance window.

The seed console command reports the seed of the currently loaded world. It is useful for recording or checking a save, but the available discussion does not establish that it can replace the seed of an existing world. The supported file-and-world-reset procedure is therefore the dependable way to create a map from a different seed.
Rollback procedure if the new world fails
- Stop the server and prevent players from reconnecting.
- Keep the newly generated folder intact so you can inspect it later, but do not overwrite your backup.
- Restore the original
level-nameandlevel-seedvalues. - For Java servers, restore the backed-up Overworld and, where applicable,
world_netherandworld_the_endfolders. For Bedrock, restore the backed-up folder underworlds/with the configured level name. - Start the server and confirm that familiar builds and player data are present before reopening access.
Keep a dated copy of both configuration and world data until the community has accepted the new map. A seed reset is successful only when the server loads the intended new terrain and you still have a recoverable copy of the old world.
The Bottom Line
To change a Minecraft server’s world seed, stop the server, back up the current save, set level-seed, and generate a different world by deleting the active folder or changing level-name. Java servers using Paper, Spigot or Purpur also require the matching Nether and End folders to be reset; Bedrock uses the folder under worlds/ that matches level-name. Existing builds remain in the old world and will not follow the new seed.
