To change the default location for games installed through the Xbox app on Windows 11, open Xbox, select your profile button, choose Settings, and open Install Options. Under Change where this app installs games by default, choose an available drive. Use Change folder to select a folder on that drive, and enable Ask me for install options on every install if you want to choose the destination each time.
The labels below come from a Windows 11 tutorial updated August 30, 2026. Xbox app releases can show slightly different wording or placement, but the drive-and-folder workflow is the same pattern described by the available guidance.

What you can change in the Xbox app
The Xbox app has an Install Options area for choosing where future game installations go. You can set both a default drive and a folder on that drive. A separate prompt setting lets you decide whether the app should ask for install choices whenever you begin another installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese controls concern the destination for installs you start after changing the setting. They are not described as a tool for moving an already-installed game, changing Windows download bandwidth limits, or changing every Microsoft Store storage policy. If you are trying to relocate an existing game, treat that as a separate problem and do not assume changing the Xbox default will migrate it.

Before you start
- Make sure the drive you want is connected and visible in Windows. The Xbox app only lets you choose drives that it offers in its own selector.
- Have a destination folder in mind if the drive contains several volumes or game-storage folders.
- Close any installation that is currently running before changing defaults. The documented controls are intended for selecting an install destination, not for interrupting an active installation.
- Expect minor label differences if your Xbox app version is not the same build shown in the August 30, 2026 tutorial.
No definitive current list of required external-drive formats, partition layouts, or other eligibility rules is established by the available guidance. Do not format a drive or change its file system solely because a game is missing from the selector; first confirm that Windows sees the drive and then consult current Microsoft support information if the Xbox app still does not offer it.
Step-by-step: change the default Xbox install drive
- Open the Xbox app. Launch Xbox from the Windows 11 Start menu or another shortcut you normally use.
- Open your profile menu. Select the profile button in the Xbox app window, then choose Settings.
- Go to Install Options. In Settings, open Install Options. This is the page that contains the default game-location controls.
- Choose a drive. Find Change where this app installs games by default. Open the available-drive selector and choose the drive you want the Xbox app to use by default.
- Apply the selection. Leave the settings page after making the selection, or use any save/confirmation control your version displays. The exact confirmation behavior can vary by app release.
Afterward, new Xbox app game installs should use the selected drive unless you choose another option during installation. The setting does not prove that every game, add-on, or Windows component will use that location; the control is specifically described for games installed by the Xbox app.
Step-by-step: choose a folder on that drive
- Return to Xbox > profile button > Settings > Install Options.
- Locate the current folder shown beside the default location.
- Select Change folder.
- Browse to the folder you want on the selected drive.
- Select that folder and accept the dialog presented by your version of Windows or the Xbox app.
The drive and folder are separate controls. You can first select a different drive, then use Change folder to refine the location on that drive. If the folder picker does not show the location you expect, verify that the drive is mounted and accessible in File Explorer before trying again.

| Setting | What happens when you start another install | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| On | The app asks you for install options each time, allowing you to select a destination instead of relying only on the default. | People who regularly switch between drives, manage free space manually, or want to review the destination for every game. |
| Off | The app uses its configured defaults unless the installation flow offers another choice. | People who normally install games to one drive and prefer fewer prompts. |
To change it, open Xbox > profile button > Settings > Install Options, then turn the toggle on or off. The wording and switch appearance may differ slightly between Xbox app versions.
Choosing between available destinations
If more than one drive appears, the app gives you a practical choice rather than a performance ranking. The available material does not provide comparative speed tests, prices, lifespan figures, or a universal recommendation for one type of drive. Use the factors below to make the decision for your own PC.
| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Free capacity | Which offered drive has enough room for the game and future updates? | Games and updates can consume substantial space; selecting a nearly full drive can create installation problems later. |
| Internal versus external | Is the destination permanently installed in the PC, or does it depend on a cable or enclosure? | An external destination must remain connected and available when you launch or update games. |
| Convenience | Will you remember which drive contains the library, and is it easy to keep connected? | A consistent default reduces accidental installs to the wrong location. |
| Suitability for game storage | Does the drive remain stable and accessible during long installs and updates? | The Xbox app can only use a destination that Windows and the app can access reliably. |
| Portability | Do you need to move the library between computers? | An external drive may be convenient to move, but portability also introduces connection and compatibility considerations. |
An external SSD is an optional way to add another destination; it is not required to change Xbox settings. Microsoft Q&A discussions describe external storage as a possible destination while warning that compatibility or performance issues can occur. Those community answers are not a formal specification, so avoid treating any particular external-drive setup as guaranteed.
What to do when the drive you want is missing
The documented dropdown contains only drives the Xbox app currently offers. If your preferred drive is absent, work through these checks without assuming a particular file system or partition format is mandatory:

- Open File Explorer and confirm that Windows can see the drive and open it.
- If it is external, reconnect it directly and verify that it remains connected rather than intermittently disappearing.
- Reopen the Xbox app, then check Settings > Install Options again.
- Confirm that you are selecting the drive selector under Change where this app installs games by default, not only the folder picker.
- If the drive is visible to Windows but still absent from Xbox, review current Microsoft/Xbox support guidance for your app version. The available sources do not establish a definitive eligibility checklist.
Do not conclude from one missing drive that buying new hardware is necessary. First determine whether Windows recognizes the existing destination and whether the Xbox app has a current software or permission issue.
When a folder is reported as in use
A Microsoft Q&A thread describes a situation in which the Xbox app reports that the default install location cannot be changed while a folder is in use. The response is community guidance, not a universal Microsoft fix. If you see that kind of error, make sure no installation, update, game, or File Explorer window is actively using the destination, then reopen the Xbox app and try the location controls again.
For a persistent failure, the same community answer suggests using Windows app recovery controls:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the Xbox app and open its Advanced options.
- Use the available Repair or Reset option, following the warning or confirmation text Windows displays.
- Reopen Xbox and revisit Settings > Install Options.
Because this procedure comes from a community-support answer, treat it as a troubleshooting option rather than a guaranteed fix or an official requirement. Read Windows’ confirmation text before using Reset, and do not use recovery controls as a substitute for backing up important files.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Changing a Windows storage setting instead of the Xbox setting
Windows has its own storage and default-save controls. The Xbox-specific route is Xbox > profile button > Settings > Install Options. If you change only a Windows setting, the Xbox app may continue using its own configured destination.
Picking a folder on the wrong drive
The folder picker is separate from the drive selector. Check the drive name and path shown in Install Options before accepting the folder so that you do not create a new library location on the old default drive.
Expecting the setting to relocate an existing game
The guidance describes where the app installs games by default. It does not describe an automatic migration of games already installed. For an existing title, use only a move option that the current Xbox app or Windows installation screen explicitly provides.
Assuming an external SSD is required
You can change the setting using any suitable drive the app already offers. External storage is an optional way to obtain another destination, not a prerequisite for opening Install Options.

Turning off the per-install prompt without checking space
If you disable Ask me for install options on every install, the app can rely on the default you configured. Check that drive’s available capacity periodically, especially before large installs or updates.
How to verify the change
- Open Xbox > profile button > Settings > Install Options.
- Check that the intended drive is shown under Change where this app installs games by default.
- Check the folder path beside the drive and confirm it is the folder you selected.
- If you enabled the prompt, start an install far enough to see whether Xbox presents install options; cancel only through the app’s normal controls if you are not ready to install.
- If you left the prompt off, confirm that the default remains selected before committing to a large download.
This verification checks the app’s stored preference. It does not test the full installation process or guarantee that an unavailable drive will become usable.
Why the labels may not match exactly
The detailed path and control names come from ElevenForum’s “Change Game Installation Options in Microsoft Store and Xbox app in Windows 11,” updated August 30, 2026. That is a third-party tutorial, not formal Xbox product documentation. Microsoft Q&A community answers corroborate the general drive-and-folder workflow and discuss external storage, but they are user-support responses rather than a definitive product specification.
Accordingly, look for the functions rather than relying on pixel-perfect wording: open the Xbox profile menu, enter Settings, find the install-options page, select an offered drive, and use the folder control if you need a more specific path. If a future app update renames a control, the equivalent destination setting should still be located in the Xbox app’s settings or installation flow.
Quick reference
| Goal | Path or action |
|---|---|
| Change the default drive | Xbox > profile button > Settings > Install Options, then choose a drive under Change where this app installs games by default. |
| Change the folder | Select Change folder beside the current folder and choose a folder on the selected drive. |
| Choose per-install destinations | Turn on Ask me for install options on every install. |
| Stop per-install prompts | Turn that setting off so Xbox uses the configured defaults. |
| Troubleshoot a persistent location error | As a community-suggested step, open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox app > Advanced options and review Repair or Reset. |
Bottom line
The Xbox app’s Windows 11 destination controls are in Profile > Settings > Install Options. Select an available drive, optionally change the folder, and enable the per-install prompt if you need to choose destinations case by case. If a drive is not listed, verify it in Windows and consult current Microsoft guidance rather than assuming a particular format or external-drive specification; if a folder-use error persists, the community-suggested Repair or Reset path is a reasonable troubleshooting step with the cautions above.
