Then either raise the child’s permitted age in the Xbox Family Settings app or allow that single title without changing the family’s general age rule. “Anime” describes an art style, not an age category, so the visuals or country of origin cannot tell you whether a game is suitable.
Check the exact game before changing a restriction
Find the game in the Xbox Store or in the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings search. Record two things:

- The rating category. This is the age-oriented classification used by the console’s content filter.
- The content descriptors. These identify the material that influenced the rating, such as the type and intensity of violence, language, sexuality, or other content listed for that title.
Do not infer a rating from an anime presentation, a cartoon-like appearance, a publisher’s country, or a game’s genre. Two games with similar animation can have very different ratings and descriptors. Read the listing for the exact edition you intend to permit, especially if the child is asking for downloadable content, an expansion, or a differently rated version.

That detail can help you make a more informed decision than the rating symbol alone.

Choose between an age rule and a title exception
Xbox gives parents two practical ways to permit a game. The right choice depends on whether you want to change the rule for a whole range of content or make a decision about one named title.

An individual-title decision is narrower. A general age change is broader because the same threshold can affect other games, films, television programs, and music covered by the console’s content setting.
Change the setting in the Xbox Family Settings app
The Family Settings app manages restrictions through each child’s profile. Use the child’s profile, not the parent’s account, when changing the rule.

- Select Content Restrictions.
- Make sure Filter Inappropriate Content is turned on. This keeps the age-based filter active while you select the permitted level.
- Select Allow Content Suitable for Age.
- Choose the permitted age that accommodates the exact rating you reviewed.
- Save or confirm the change if the app presents a confirmation screen, then have the child sign in again or restart the game if the old permission is still cached.
The labels above are the route described in the ESRB Xbox parental-controls guide. Microsoft and Xbox can revise menu wording, so a newer app release may place the same controls in a slightly different screen.

Allow only one anime game in the app
If you do not want to raise the general age limit, stay in the child’s Content Restrictions area and look for the list of individual game titles. The ESRB guide says the Family Settings app can allow or block individual games irrespective of their rating.
- Open the child’s profile under Your Family.
- Go to Content Restrictions.
- Open the individual game-title controls.
- Find and select the exact game the child is requesting.
- Set that title to Allow, while leaving the general age rule at its existing level.
- Ask the child to close and relaunch the game, or sign out and back in, so the account requests a fresh permission check.
Use the title-specific option only after checking the game’s rating and descriptors. The exception changes the family setting for that selected title; it does not establish that every anime game, sequel, add-on, or similarly named edition is permitted.
Change content restrictions on the Xbox console
You can also make an age-based change directly on the console. The ESRB guide describes this path for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S:
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy and online safety.
- Select the relevant family member.
- Open Content restrictions.
- Choose the age-based content option and set the permitted level.
Console software updates can change the exact labels or their position. If you cannot find the item, start in the child’s family profile and look for privacy, online-safety, or content-restriction controls rather than changing general console preferences.

The console’s content restriction is broader than games. According to the ESRB Xbox guide, the age scale applies across games, movies, TV, and music. Therefore, raising the permitted age to accommodate one game can also make other media at that level available to the child.
What the age setting does—and what it does not do
It filters content by rating information
The ESRB describes the filter this way: “This setting will block potentially inappropriate games based on the ESRB rating information.” In practice, the permitted age is a rule applied to the rating data associated with the content. It is not an analysis of whether a game looks realistic, colorful, violent, or anime-inspired.
It can cover more than games
On the console, the same content-restriction framework can cover movies, television, and music as well as games. Consider that wider effect before selecting a higher age threshold for a child who uses the Xbox for several types of media.

It is separate from a web filter
Microsoft’s Xbox One guidance for filtering inappropriate websites and searches concerns browser and search activity. That control is separate from the game-age setting described here. Changing a website filter will not, by itself, authorize a game blocked by the child’s content restriction, and changing the game setting will not configure website or search filtering.

It does not guarantee every other requirement is met
An allowed title can still require the correct Xbox account, a compatible console, a purchase or entitlement, an online connection, a regional store listing, or an age-gated sign-in flow. The Family Settings control addresses the family content permission; it is not a promise that the store, publisher, network service, or account system will waive its own requirements.
How to decide which option is safer
Use the following decision process rather than treating “anime” as the deciding factor:
- Identify the exact title. Confirm the full name and edition in the Xbox Store.
- Read the rating and descriptors. Note the category and the specific content described by ESRB.
- Ask whether other content at that age is acceptable. If not, do not raise the general threshold merely for convenience.
- Prefer an individual exception when the decision is title-specific. This keeps the broader family rule unchanged.
- Review the setting after the child plays. A sequel, expansion, or newly downloaded game may carry different rating information.
For a household rule that should apply consistently to many games, the age-based setting is easier to administer. For a one-off request, the individual-title control limits the scope of the change.

Troubleshooting when the game is still blocked
The wrong profile was changed
Confirm that the child is signed in with the account selected under Your Family. A parent account or a different child profile can have a separate content rule, so changing it will not alter the blocked account.

The new permission has not propagated
Close the game completely, restart it, and have the child sign out and back in. If necessary, restart the console. These steps force a new permission check after an app or console setting change.
The general age level is still too low
Reopen Content Restrictions and verify the value under Allow Content Suitable for Age. Selecting an individual title is an alternative when you do not want to change the general threshold; it is not the same control.
The listing or descriptor was misunderstood
Return to the exact Xbox Store listing or ESRB ratings entry. Check whether you selected the correct edition and read the descriptors, including qualifiers such as Mild. Do not substitute the rating of a similarly named game, a trailer, or a different platform version.

The issue is actually a website or search restriction
If the child can launch the game but cannot reach a web page, search result, or browser service, inspect the separate web-filter settings. The Xbox One website-and-search filter is not the game-age control.
The game has another account or regional requirement
If the family setting shows the title as allowed but launch or purchase still fails, check the child’s entitlement, account sign-in, region, and any online-service requirement. The age exception does not override those independent checks.
Parent checklist before approving an anime game
- Confirm the exact game title and edition.
- Read the ESRB rating category.
- Read every listed content descriptor and any qualifying wording.
- Decide whether the rule should cover all content at an age level or only one title.
- Remember that the console content setting can include movies, TV, and music.
- Use the child’s profile in the Xbox Family Settings app or console family settings.
- Keep Filter Inappropriate Content on when using the app’s age-based controls.
- After changing a permission, restart the game or sign in again if access does not update immediately.
- Check separate web, store, account, regional, and online requirements when a permitted game still will not launch.
