Use Change Appearance on your existing GTA Online character; do not delete or replace the character. Rockstar says you can change heritage, features, appearance and apparel through the Interaction Menu for a fee, but it does not explicitly guarantee that every saved outfit type survives every edit. Before you confirm, note the saved outfits you care about; afterward, check the outfit slots in-game.
Change appearance on your existing character
Rockstar’s documented option is in the Interaction Menu’s Style section. A current menu guide places it under Appearance and calls the option Change Appearance. Menu wording can vary by version or platform, so look for that option in the Style or Appearance area rather than choosing a character-management or deletion option. Rockstar’s support article, last updated April 20, 2024, says the feature is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC: Appearance and Gender Changes in GTA Online.

This is an edit to the character you already have, not a request to start over. Rockstar says the feature lets you change your character’s heritage, features, appearance and apparel for a fee. Those are the boundaries to keep in mind when you enter the editor: it is meant for adjusting the existing character’s look, and it is not a way to change the character’s gender. The menu guide’s additional fee and outfit-slot details are useful for planning, but treat them as guide-reported menu information rather than a permanent guarantee about every version of the game.

Before opening the editor, note the names and key clothing combinations of the saved custom outfits you care about. Taking screenshots is another practical precaution. This is not a Rockstar-mandated backup method; it simply gives you a reference if you need to check or rebuild an outfit afterward. The available official guidance does not promise that every saved, special or unusual outfit category will persist through every appearance-editing case.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Be specific in your notes. If you have several outfits with similar names, record which one uses which key pieces or color combination so you can tell them apart when you review the slots later. A screenshot can capture the visible look, while a short written note can identify the saved name or an item that is easy to overlook. These steps do not create a separate backup of the outfit, lock it against changes or guarantee that it will be restored; they are simply a way to remember what you intended to keep.
It is especially sensible to make a record if an outfit is unusual or would take time to recreate. The sources do not say that special outfits are necessarily lost, nor do they say that every such outfit is protected. The point of recording them is to avoid relying on an assumption in either direction. If the editor affects something unexpectedly, you will have a reference; if everything remains as it was, you can confirm that too.
2. Open the Interaction Menu
The control depends on platform. GTABase’s Interaction Menu guide, updated January 24, 2026, lists these inputs: GTA 5 Interaction Menu: GTA Online Inventory & All Options.
- PC: Press M.
- PS4 or PS5: Hold the touchpad.
- Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S: Hold the View button.
Controls and menu labels can change with game updates or differ by platform. If an input does not open the menu, check the game’s current control settings.
Once the Interaction Menu is open, take a moment to orient yourself before selecting anything. The goal is to find the Style or Appearance area and then the specific Change Appearance command. Do not treat every menu item related to a character as interchangeable: the change-appearance command edits the current character, while deletion is a separate action with a separate confirmation flow.
The controls above are the inputs listed by GTABase as of January 24, 2026; they are not a promise that every control layout is identical on every setup. If you have remapped controls, are playing a different edition, or find that the listed input does not work, use the current in-game controls as the reference. The key point is to open the Interaction Menu, not to navigate to a character deletion screen or create/replace a character.

3. Select Change Appearance and review the fee
In the Interaction Menu, open Style or Appearance, then select Change Appearance. Rockstar describes changing heritage, features, appearance and apparel there for a fee. GTABase lists the fee as GTA$100,000 in its January 24, 2026 guide. Treat that as a guide-reported amount, not a permanent price guarantee: check the amount displayed in your game before confirming.
Rockstar’s support page confirms that there is a fee but does not specify an amount in the cited guidance. The GTA$100,000 figure comes from the GTABase menu guide, so it is useful for estimating what to expect, not a substitute for reading the confirmation displayed in your own game. If the game shows a different amount, rely on the in-game display rather than assuming the guide’s figure must apply to your version or current menu.
Before accepting the fee, make sure you selected the intended option and are ready to make the edits. If you only meant to inspect a menu or were trying to change clothing, pause and confirm which action is selected. Rockstar describes appearance editing as a paid feature; the fee is part of this edit, not a charge for deleting a character. Do not proceed just because you are unsure whether an outfit will remain—the available sources do not settle that edge case.
4. Make the edits and confirm
Choose the available changes you want, review them, and confirm only if you are comfortable with the in-game fee. You can change your character’s heritage, features, appearance and apparel through this feature. You cannot use it to change the character’s gender. Rockstar’s support article states: “No. There is no way to change your character’s gender after the initial character creation process.”
That distinction answers a common point of confusion: appearance editing and gender selection are not the same thing. Rockstar’s statement specifically says gender cannot be changed after the initial character creation process. Do not pay the appearance-editing fee expecting that it will unlock a gender change, and do not delete the character as a supposed workaround for an ordinary look adjustment.

The official support article refers to PS4, Xbox One and PC. The menu guide lists controls across those platforms as well as PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Because platform menus and labels can evolve, use the option actually shown in your game and confirm the fee there. The platform list does not change the central advice: use the existing character’s appearance editor and keep deletion separate from that task.
5. Check the saved outfit slots afterward
Once you return to freemode, open the Interaction Menu and go to Appearance > Outfit to review your saved custom outfits. GTABase lists 20 saved custom outfit slots. This is a check, not proof that every outfit category is preserved or lost: neither Rockstar’s appearance guidance nor the menu guide provides a universal guarantee about persistence across all outfit types and editing cases. If an outfit you care about is missing or altered, use the notes or screenshots you made to see whether you can recreate it.
Review the saved custom outfits you recorded before editing, rather than checking only one slot and assuming the rest are unchanged. The guide’s 20-slot figure refers to saved custom outfit slots; it should not be read as a guarantee about every special, unusual or other outfit category. If the names and visible combinations look right, you have verified the outfits you care about in your current game. If something differs, your notes give you a reference for deciding what needs attention.

Do not interpret the absence of an official guarantee as evidence that outfits are automatically deleted. Equally, do not interpret the existence of an Outfit selector or 20 slots as proof that every saved combination survives every edit. The careful answer is narrower: the sources document how to change appearance and where to select saved outfits, but do not settle every persistence scenario. Checking in-game after the edit is a practical safeguard, not a claim that loss or preservation has been confirmed in all cases.
Appearance editing is not character deletion
Changing appearance edits the character you are using. Deleting a character is a different, destructive operation and is not a workaround for an appearance change. Rockstar’s deletion instructions require a confirmation step in which the player enters “delete”; the article gives separate directions for current- and previous-generation platforms and PC editions: How to delete characters in Grand Theft Auto Online (last updated June 18, 2025).
The distinction matters because “change my character’s look” and “remove my character” are different requests. The former has a documented paid option in the Interaction Menu. The latter removes the selected character through a deletion process with an explicit confirmation. Rockstar’s deletion article separates instructions for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC Enhanced, PS4, Xbox One and PC Legacy, which is another reason not to follow a deletion path casually when you only want to edit appearance.

Do not choose delete, create a replacement character or overwrite a character as a substitute for the appearance editor. The deletion flow is not a method of preserving saved outfits, and the cited support information does not say that deleting and recreating a character transfers outfits. If the aim is to alter an existing character’s look, stay with Change Appearance and make the post-edit outfit check.

What to expect about saved outfits
The practical answer to “Will changing appearance delete my saved outfits?” is: use the existing-character editor, then verify the saved slots rather than assuming either that every outfit is guaranteed safe or that the edit automatically deletes them. Rockstar’s support page explains which appearance attributes can be changed and where to find the feature, but does not make a blanket statement about saved outfit persistence. GTABase documents an Outfit selector and 20 custom slots, but does not establish how every special or unusual outfit behaves during every appearance edit.
That distinction matters if an outfit is difficult to recreate. Keep a record of the combinations you value before the edit, check the saved outfits afterward, and do not begin a character deletion flow in an attempt to preserve clothing. The price and menu details here are guide-reported values and can change; the in-game menu is the place to confirm the current fee and option labels.
In short, there is no supported basis here for a blanket promise that outfit slots will always be untouched, and there is no supported basis for saying that an appearance change necessarily deletes them. Treat the edit as an appearance change on the existing character, take a simple reference beforehand, and verify your saved outfits in the Outfit selector when you return to freemode. That approach addresses the uncertainty without confusing an appearance edit with the permanent character-deletion flow.

Where is Change Appearance in the menu?
Open the Interaction Menu and look under Style or Appearance for Change Appearance. Rockstar calls it part of the Style section; GTABase lists it in Appearance. Menu names can vary by platform or game version.
How do I open the Interaction Menu?
GTABase’s guide, updated January 24, 2026, lists M on PC, holding the touchpad on PS4 or PS5, and holding View on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Controls may differ with settings or updates, so check the current in-game controls if these inputs do not work.
Can I change my character’s gender with Change Appearance?
No. Rockstar Games Customer Support says there is no way to change a character’s gender after the initial character creation process. The appearance editor is not a gender-change route.
How many custom outfit slots can I check?
GTABase lists 20 saved custom outfit slots in its January 24, 2026 Interaction Menu guide. Check the Outfit selector after returning to freemode, but do not treat the slot count as a guarantee about every special or unusual outfit category.
Should I delete or replace my character to change appearance?
No. Use Change Appearance on the existing character. Rockstar documents character deletion as a separate operation with a confirmation step requiring the player to enter “delete”; deletion is destructive and is not an appearance-editing workaround.
What should I do if an outfit is missing or looks different afterward?
Use the notes or screenshots you made before editing as a reference and see whether you can recreate the combination. Those notes are a precaution, not an official backup or restoration method.
The Bottom Line
Use Change Appearance on the character you already have, check the fee shown in-game, and do not use character deletion as a workaround. Since Rockstar does not make a universal promise about saved outfit persistence, record the combinations you care about first and check the saved custom outfit slots after the edit.
