If you’re looking up how to customize the PS5 home screen and game hub, the first thing to know is that they are separate interface areas. The Welcome Hub is the home-screen area Sony documents for personalization: you can edit its widgets, choose a preset or build a layout, and change its background. A Game Hub is the information space for one selected game. Sony describes what appears there, but does not document a way to rearrange its contents.

This guide walks through the Welcome Hub controls, explains the background and appearance choices, and separates them from Gamelists and Control Center settings. Those features can help organize games or shortcuts, but they do not change a Game Hub’s layout.

What you can customize on PS5

The Welcome Hub is the PS5 home-screen area Sony documents for personalizing. Its widgets can be turned on or off, moved, and resized. You can apply a ready-made preset or create a custom one, choose a background, and adjust Hub settings such as followed games, temporary-widget position, and Large Layout. The specific widgets available can vary by region, so the options on your console may not match every example or screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The individual controls serve different purposes. Toggling widgets changes which pieces of information appear; moving them changes their position; resizing them changes how much space a widget occupies. A preset is a quicker starting arrangement, while a custom preset lets you make your own choices. Background selection changes the visual backdrop, not the contents of an individual game’s page.

The steps below follow Sony’s Welcome Hub support guide. Menu names can change with system updates, and regional widget availability may affect what you see. The Welcome Hub controls described here are built-in console settings; the cited instructions do not require a separate accessory.

There are also generation-inspired appearance choices in system settings, as well as separate ways to organize the game library and the in-game Control Center. These are adjacent options, not alternative names for the Welcome Hub. If your goal is to change the page for a specific game, the distinction is especially important: Sony describes Game Hub content, but does not provide steps for customizing its arrangement.

Customize the Welcome Hub, step by step

  1. From the PS5 home screen, open Welcome Hub. This is the area to use when you want to change home-screen widgets or the background.
  2. Select Edit Widgets. Highlight a widget and press X to turn it on or off. Use this when you want to include or remove a type of information from the Hub.
  3. To reposition a widget, select it and press Square. Use the directional buttons to move it, then press X to confirm. Moving a widget changes its placement in the Welcome Hub; it does not change the contents of a Game Hub.
  4. To change a widget’s size, select it and press L1 or R1. This gives you another way to adjust how much space that widget takes up.
  5. For a ready-made arrangement, select Change Preset. To build a layout yourself, select Create Preset. These are the documented choices for starting with a preset or making a custom arrangement.
  6. To change the background, select Change Background, then choose a tab: From PlayStation, Games, or Media Gallery. Choose the source that contains the image you want to use.
  7. Open the Hub settings to adjust followed games, change the position of temporary widgets, or enable Large Layout. These settings are separate from the basic widget editing controls.

Sony documents these Welcome Hub controls on its PS5 Welcome Hub support page. If a widget or setting is missing, regional availability may be the reason; Sony explicitly notes that widget availability varies by region. Menu labels can also shift with software updates, so use the closest matching option on your console rather than assuming every interface will look identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical order is to decide first what information you want to see, then turn widgets on or off, move them, and resize them. Once the arrangement is satisfactory, decide whether to keep a preset or create a custom one, and then select a background. This order keeps the content and the visual background decisions distinct; the background choice does not itself add, remove, or rearrange widgets.

Choose a layout and background

Preset or custom preset

Change Preset is the quicker path if one of the layouts available on your console already suits you. Applying a ready-made arrangement avoids having to decide every widget position from scratch. Create Preset is the documented route when you want to choose your own setup. You can then use the edit controls to toggle, move, and resize widgets.

The choice is mainly about how much control you want over the arrangement. A preset is convenient when you want to start from an offered layout; a custom preset is appropriate when you want to shape the Welcome Hub around the widgets you prefer. The documentation does not establish that a custom Welcome Hub preset changes how any individual Game Hub is presented. Treat those as separate areas.

Because widgets are region-dependent, the ingredients available for a custom arrangement may differ between consoles or locations. If you cannot find a particular widget, the first point to check is whether it is available in your region, rather than assuming the controls are broken.

Widget size and Large Layout

Resizing individual widgets lets you give selected information more or less room. Select a widget and use L1 or R1 to change its size. The separate Large Layout option is another documented Hub setting. These are the choices Sony lists for changing information density: adjust the size of particular widgets, or enable Large Layout from Hub settings.

Use individual resizing when the main goal is to give one or more widgets a different footprint while leaving the rest of the layout as you arranged it. Large Layout is a distinct setting, rather than another name for resizing one widget. Sony’s support page identifies it as a Hub setting but does not describe additional granular controls beyond the documented options, so the exact effect should be checked on the console itself.

Background source and display mode

The background picker offers images from From PlayStation, Games, and Media Gallery. These tabs represent the documented places to choose an image: PlayStation imagery, game-related imagery, or items in the Media Gallery. The image source is a separate choice from the widget layout.

Sony also documents two display modes. Slideshow rotates through an album, while Showcase displays the full background while the console is idle. In other words, use Slideshow when you want the background to cycle through an album, and use Showcase when you want the complete background shown during idle time. Select a source for the image you want, then use whichever display mode options are available to decide how it appears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These modes do not mean that every background source or every widget is available in every region. If an option does not appear in your picker, regional availability is a documented qualification for the Welcome Hub. The support instructions list the three background tabs and both modes; they do not establish that the same selections alter the background of an individual game’s Game Hub.

Followed games and temporary widgets

Hub settings also let you change which games you follow and where temporary widgets appear. These are useful when you want the Welcome Hub’s game-related information or short-lived widgets handled differently without confusing that with a permanent change to the Game Hub for one title.

Followed games, temporary-widget position, and Large Layout are settings within the Welcome Hub. They are not replacements for editing widgets, and they do not amount to controls for rearranging a game’s own hub. Since temporary widgets are explicitly described as temporary, their position setting concerns where those widgets appear, not a promise that the widget itself will remain there indefinitely.

Console-generation appearance designs

For the documented generation-inspired appearance options, open Settings > System > Appearance > Appearance and Sound and choose a design. This is a separate system appearance setting, rather than a widget or background control within the Welcome Hub. It changes the overall design choice documented under system settings; it is not the menu for moving a widget or selecting a Welcome Hub image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony’s PS5 features page notes that designs and specifications can change. If you do not see the same option names or designs, check the current menu on your console rather than assuming the Welcome Hub steps apply to this separate setting.

What a Game Hub is—and what its settings do not establish

A Game Hub belongs to an individual game. Sony describes it as a place that gathers information related to that title, including community broadcasts and new game content, and says the space evolves through the game’s lifecycle. PlayStation’s PS5 features page describes it this way: “Each game on PS5 has its own hub, which collects everything related to that game together, from community broadcasts to new game content. It’s a constantly updated space that will evolve and adapt throughout the game’s lifecycle.” That is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s corporate description, not a quotation from a named individual.

The wording explains the purpose of a Game Hub: it brings together related game information in a space that can evolve as the game does. It does not document user controls for changing the hub’s layout. Sony’s PS5 features overview explains the feature but gives no instructions for rearranging its contents. The documented Welcome Hub controls therefore should not be assumed to apply to a game’s page.

If by “customize the game hub” you mean changing what information appears on a particular title’s page, the cited Sony guidance does not establish a setting for that. You can personalize the Welcome Hub and use related organizational features such as Gamelists, but neither is evidence that the contents of an individual Game Hub can be rearranged. This is the central limitation to keep in mind when interpreting the phrase “PS5 home screen and game hub.”

Organize games with Gamelists

Gamelists help organize the collection in Game Library; they do not alter the Welcome Hub or a game’s Game Hub. They are useful if the practical goal is to group games in Your Collection rather than change a page’s visual layout. To create one:

  1. From Games home, go to Game Library > Your Collection > Create Gamelist.
  2. Choose the games for the list and follow the on-screen prompts. The list appears at the top of Your Collection.

To add games later, open the list and choose Add More to Gamelist, or highlight a game and use Options > Add to Gamelist. The first route starts from the list; the second starts from a game in the collection. Both are documented ways to add games without recreating the list.

To remove a game, open the list, highlight the game, press Options, and select Remove from Gamelist. To edit a list’s name or delete it, highlight the list and use Options. These are management actions for a list in Your Collection, not controls for changing how a Game Hub displays content. Sony’s Gamelist support guide documents these steps.

Rearrange Control Center icons separately

The Control Center is the quick-access menu opened while playing, not the Welcome Hub home screen. Its purpose is to provide shortcuts without leaving gameplay. If you want to change the order of those shortcuts, use the Control Center’s own options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the PS button to open Control Center.
  2. Highlight an icon and press Options.
  3. Select the icon you want to move, then move it with the directional controls.
  4. Press X to place it. To hide an icon, move it to Hidden Controls.

Sony notes that some Control Center icons cannot be hidden. So if an icon does not offer the hide option, that limitation is documented; it does not mean the home-screen Welcome Hub controls have failed. Reordering or hiding an available Control Center icon affects quick access while playing, not the arrangement of home-screen widgets or the information in an individual game’s Game Hub.

See Sony’s PS5 Control Center support guide for the official instructions. This is the relevant feature when the thing you want to personalize is the shortcut menu accessed with the PS button.

Which option should you use?

Use the area that matches what you actually want to change. The Welcome Hub is for home-screen widgets and backgrounds; the Game Hub is where information about one selected title is gathered; Gamelists sort titles in the library; the Control Center handles quick-access icons during play. System appearance designs are a further, separate choice.

What you want to change Use this feature What it lets you do
Home-screen information and arrangement Welcome Hub Toggle, move, and resize widgets; choose or create a preset
Home-screen background Welcome Hub background Choose from PlayStation imagery, game imagery, or Media Gallery; use Slideshow or Showcase
Information for one particular game Game Hub View game-related information such as community broadcasts and new content; Sony does not document layout rearrangement steps
Organization of the game library Gamelists Create and manage lists within Your Collection
Shortcuts while playing Control Center Reorder available icons or move some to Hidden Controls
Generation-inspired system design Appearance and Sound settings Select a documented appearance design

For more information visible on the home screen, edit Welcome Hub widgets. For a different visual feel, change the Welcome Hub background or the separate system appearance design. For a more organized collection, create Gamelists. For shortcuts during gameplay, rearrange Control Center icons. If the intended change is the layout of one game’s Game Hub, Sony’s feature overview describes what that hub contains but does not document a customization procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you customize a PS5 Game Hub?

Sony describes Game Hubs as spaces for information about a specific game, including community broadcasts and new content, and says they evolve through the game’s lifecycle. The cited feature overview does not document a way for users to rearrange a Game Hub’s layout. The personalization steps Sony documents apply to the Welcome Hub instead.

How do I customize the PS5 Welcome Hub?

Open Welcome Hub from the PS5 home screen and select Edit Widgets. Press X on a highlighted widget to toggle it on or off; select it and press Square to move it, then use the directional buttons and press X to confirm; use L1 or R1 to resize it. Change Preset and Create Preset provide ready-made and custom layout choices.

How do I change the PS5 Welcome Hub background?

Select Change Background and choose from From PlayStation, Games, or Media Gallery. Sony also documents Slideshow, which rotates through an album, and Showcase, which displays the full background while the console is idle.

Why can’t I see a particular Welcome Hub widget?

Sony says widget availability varies by region, so a widget may not be available on every console. Menu names and options can also change with system updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Large Layout and resizing a widget?

Resizing uses L1 or R1 on a selected widget to change that widget’s size. Large Layout is a separate option in Hub settings. Both are documented Welcome Hub controls for adjusting the information layout, but they are distinct settings.

Do Gamelists change the home screen or Game Hub?

No. Gamelists organize games within Game Library’s Your Collection. You can create a list there, add or remove games, rename it, or delete it, but those actions do not customize the Welcome Hub or the layout of an individual Game Hub.

Can I hide every Control Center icon?

No. Sony says some Control Center icons cannot be hidden. For icons that can be moved, press the PS button, highlight an icon, press Options, select and move it, then press X to place it. Moving an icon to Hidden Controls hides it when that option is available.

The Bottom Line

For PS5 home-screen personalization, use the Welcome Hub: edit widgets, choose a preset or create your own, and select a background or display mode. A Game Hub is a separate, evolving information space for one game; Sony describes its content but does not document a way to rearrange its layout. Use Gamelists for your collection and Control Center settings for in-game shortcuts.
