Fortnite does not use a separate account-wide gender setting. To make your character appear male or female, open Locker → Character → Outfit and equip an outfit with the appearance you want. If you are using Fortnite’s default character, you can edit the available default choices instead of buying a skin.
How to change your Fortnite character to male or female
Fortnite officially calls character cosmetics Outfits, although many players call them skins. The outfit you equip controls how your character appears in the lobby and in supported gameplay.

- Launch Fortnite and enter the main lobby.
- Open the Locker tab.
- Select Character.
- Open Outfit or Outfits.
- Choose an owned outfit with the appearance you want.
- Back out or confirm the selection if Fortnite asks you to save it.

How to change the free default character
You do not need to buy V-Bucks simply to switch between the default character options. Try Fortnite’s Default Outfit editor first:

- Go to Locker → Character → Outfits.
- Find and select the tile representing the Default Outfit.
- Open the three-dot menu at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Edit Styles.
- Choose an option on the Pick Outfit screen.
- Save or exit the menu to equip it.
The exact labels can vary by platform, language, and interface version. Some Fortnite menus and guides use Edit Style, while current Epic support instructions also use Character, Outfit, and Edit Styles. Epic documents this process in its guide to changing the look of the Default Outfit.
Do you need to buy an outfit?
No. First check the Default Outfit editor and any cosmetics already available on your account. You may also obtain cosmetics through applicable Fortnite progression or passes.

If you want a specific male-presenting or female-presenting character, you must own or unlock that particular Outfit. Outfits can be offered through Fortnite’s in-game store or Web Shop, and availability depends on the item, region, platform, and current shop rotation. Epic explains where Fortnite cosmetics can be obtained.

Can you change only the gender of one outfit?
There is no documented universal male/female body-model switch for every outfit. Some individual outfits have selectable styles, but those styles are specific to that cosmetic. You generally cannot convert any male-presenting outfit into a female-presenting version, or vice versa, while keeping the same outfit.
Fortnite also includes masked, non-human, stylized, and crossover characters, so not every Outfit has a meaningful male or female classification. Choose the appearance that suits you rather than relying on a universal gender label.

Does this work on every platform?
The core Locker process is intended to be platform-neutral across supported versions of Fortnite on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and other supported platforms. Menu placement and wording may differ after an interface update.
The selected outfit normally appears in the lobby and supported gameplay, but individual Fortnite experiences can restrict or replace player cosmetics. Epic notes that content compatibility can vary between experiences.

Why did my character change in Creative?
Changing your Locker outfit and changing your appearance inside a Creative island are separate situations. Some islands provide a Changing Booth, allowing you to select an outfit during the experience. A creator may also use a Disguise device to apply a temporary character appearance.
Those changes are island-specific and are not an account-wide gender setting. See Epic’s documentation for Outfits and Changing Booths and Disguise devices.
Fortnite gender-change troubleshooting
The Locker tab is missing
- Make sure you are at the main lobby, not currently inside an island.
- Look for Locker, Character, or an outfit icon if the layout has changed.
- Restart Fortnite and install any available update.
The outfit was selected but did not appear
- Confirm that the selection was saved or confirmed.
- Check that you changed the lobby Outfit rather than an in-match disguise.
- Leave the island and check your character in the main lobby.
- Make sure you are signed into the intended Epic account.
- Check whether the current island restricts or overrides cosmetics.
The desired option is not visible
- Open the full Outfits list, not only the currently equipped item.
- Check the Default Outfit tile and its Edit Styles menu.
- Clear filters, favorites, or sorting options that may hide items.
- Confirm that the outfit is owned or otherwise available to your account.
The default character keeps changing
If Fortnite shows a different default character, open the Default Outfit editor and select a specific available option. The official documentation confirms the editor and its available choices; it should not be assumed that every default-character behavior is governed by one universal randomization rule in every current version.

No. Changing the equipped Outfit or editing the Default Outfit is the appropriate solution. Creating another Epic account will not provide a general gender setting and may separate your progress, cosmetics, and purchases from your existing account.
What this change actually affects
This process changes the visual appearance of your Fortnite avatar. It does not change your real-world gender, Epic account identity, account ownership details, or other personal information. Fortnite’s current documented Locker flow provides outfit and style controls rather than a separate account-level gender control.
