Change the name on your Epic account from Epic’s website—not from your PlayStation or Xbox settings. Sign in to the Epic account linked to the game, verify its email address, open Account settings, enter a new value in Display name, and select Continue. Epic permits one display-name change every two weeks. This changes the Epic identity shown in the Epic Games Launcher, Epic’s forum and AnswerHub, on PC/Mac and mobile, and on Nintendo Switch; it does not change a PlayStation Online ID or an Xbox gamertag.
Know which name you are changing
“Epic name” and “console username” are not always the same account field. Epic’s display name belongs to your Epic Games account. PlayStation and Xbox control the names their networks show, while Nintendo uses the Epic display name for the consoles named in Epic’s support guidance.

Epic’s display-name locator explains where the Epic name appears. Its change procedure confirms that the PlayStation and Xbox names remain platform-controlled. If your goal is a different PSN ID or Xbox gamertag, use that platform’s account settings instead of Epic’s page.
This distinction explains why one person can appear under different names without having multiple game accounts. The Epic account supplies the identity on Epic-controlled surfaces, but a console can place its own network identity in the in-game player list or social overlay. Seeing two names is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the wrong account is linked.

What you need before starting
- The correct Epic account: Use the account that is actually linked to the game and console profile. Signing in to a different Epic account will rename the wrong identity.
- A browser: The rename is completed on Epic’s website through Account settings; it is not a setting inside the game.
- A verified email address: Epic lists email verification as a prerequisite. If the address is unverified, complete verification before attempting the change.
- A name you can keep for 14 days: Epic allows a display-name change only once every two weeks, so check spelling and capitalization before submitting.
Before editing anything, identify how you originally signed in. A player who started on a console may have an Epic profile connected through the console login without having entered a separate Epic password or completed every account field. The console sign-in option on Epic’s website is the safest way to reach that existing profile.
Do not unlink a console account simply to rename it. Epic documents unlinking as a separate account-management operation and warns that it can affect access to game data associated with the account. Renaming and relinking solve different problems: a display-name change edits one account field, while unlinking changes the relationship between accounts.
How to change the Epic Games display name
- Open Epic Games’ website and sign in. Use the Epic credentials connected to the game. If you normally play only on a console, select that console’s sign-in option on Epic’s login page.
- Finish account setup if Epic asks. A console-only profile may prompt you to “Finish Setting Up Your Account.” Complete that flow before looking for the display-name field; an incomplete profile may not expose all account settings.
- Open Account settings. From your account menu on the Epic website, choose Account or Account settings, depending on the current layout.
- Confirm email verification. The account page should show that the email is verified. If Epic offers a verification action, follow it and return to Account settings after the status updates.
- Locate the Display name box. Enter the new Epic name exactly as you want it to appear. This field is for the Epic account name, not your PSN ID or Xbox gamertag.
- Select Continue. Review the confirmation and submit. Epic applies the new display name to the Epic surfaces and platforms that use it.
- Check the result where appropriate. Sign out and back in to the Epic Games Launcher, revisit your Epic profile, or start a Nintendo Switch session if you need to verify the new Epic value. A PlayStation or Xbox session can still show its unchanged platform name by design.
Epic’s current instructions are in How to change your Epic Games display name. Interface wording can move slightly, but the required field and the Continue action are the same parts of the process.

A typo, unintended capitalization, or extra spacing can remain in place until the next change window opens.
If you have only used a console
Some players began playing by choosing a console login and never completed a full Epic account profile. In that case, go to Epic’s website, choose the sign-in button for the console you use, and authenticate with that platform account. When Epic presents Finish Setting Up Your Account, complete the requested account details. Then open Account settings and follow the normal display-name steps.
This route is important because the console login identifies the linked Epic profile; creating a separate Epic account with a new email can leave your game progress and purchases attached to the original profile. If the website repeatedly opens a different account, sign out, return to the console-login option, and use the platform account that owns the game data.
Do not judge which profile is correct solely by the name you see. Names can differ across services, and an account may have an incomplete setup. Check the linked console identity and the account details shown after signing in. If the profile is the one associated with your game, finish its setup rather than starting over with a new Epic account.

Epic summarizes the distinction this way: changing its display name does not affect PSN or Xbox gamertags, so the in-game name can differ by console platform. That difference is normal and does not indicate that your accounts are incorrectly linked.
For example, changing an Epic name can update what a PC friend sees through Epic services while an Xbox friend continues to see the gamertag assigned by Xbox. The same account can therefore have one Epic display name and one platform name at the same time. Choose the setting owned by the service whose audience you want to reach.
Why the Display name field is locked
A lock beside the field usually means the account changed its display name within the previous two weeks. Epic enforces the cooldown rather than allowing an immediate second rename. Hover over the information icon beside the field to see the date associated with the last change, then wait until the two-week period has ended.
The cooldown applies to the Epic display name only. It does not prevent you from changing a PlayStation Online ID or Xbox gamertag through the platform’s own process, although those services have their own rules. Do not try to bypass the Epic lock by unlinking and relinking the console account; that does not provide a safe shortcut.
If you changed the name recently on another device, the same account-wide lock still applies. Switching from a console to a computer, signing out, or opening a different game does not start a new timer. The date shown next to the information icon is the useful reference for when the Epic field becomes available again.
Troubleshooting the rename
The account says the email is not verified
Open the email-verification control in Account settings, request a new verification message if necessary, and use the link sent to the account address. Return to the account page after verification is complete. The Display name change cannot be submitted until Epic recognizes the address as verified.
Make sure you verify the address belonging to the Epic account you intend to rename. Verifying an address on a different Epic profile will not unlock the field on the account connected to your game.

Check the date shown by the information icon. Another person with access to the Epic account may have changed the name, or a previous change may have been made recently on another device. The date determines when the next change becomes available; changing consoles does not reset the timer.

The new name is rejected
Epic maintains separate display-name rules, and child accounts can have additional restrictions. The available instructions do not list every prohibited word, character, length, or Cabined Account condition. If a particular name is refused, consult Epic’s current display-name rules and Cabined Account guidance from the error or help links shown on the account page. Do not assume that a name accepted on PSN or Xbox will also be accepted as an Epic display name.
A rejected name does not mean you should edit the console username instead. The two systems apply different ownership and rules. Keep the Epic account connected, choose a name that follows Epic’s guidance, and submit it only after the field accepts the value.
The Epic name looks different on PlayStation or Xbox
That is expected when the platform username is being shown. Epic’s name locator identifies PlayStation and Xbox as platform-controlled in-game identities. Change the PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag with the relevant platform account if that is the name you want other console players to see.

Epic says synchronization can take a while. Sign out and back in, allow time for the linked-account page to refresh, and check again. The unlink/relink instructions in My console display name hasn’t updated on my Epic Games Linked accounts page are for a synchronization problem, not for changing the Epic display name.
An old label on that page is not a reason to repeat the rename or create another Epic account. First distinguish a delayed linked-account label from the name actually shown in the game. If the issue is only synchronization, follow Epic’s account-linking help and avoid changing a working connection unnecessarily.
You are considering unlinking the console
Stop and verify which account owns the game data first. Epic’s linked-account guidance warns that unlinking can affect access to data associated with the account. A display-name change requires no unlinking, so keep the connection intact unless you have a separate, well-understood account-linking problem.
Epic display name versus PSN ID or Xbox gamertag
Use the identity owner—not the game title—to choose the settings page. Players often call a visible Fortnite or other Epic-game name their “console name,” but the game can obtain that label from different services. On PC, mobile and Nintendo Switch, the Epic display name is the relevant field. On PlayStation, the PSN identity supplies the name; on Xbox, the gamertag does.

- Want the Epic profile name changed everywhere Epic controls it? Use Epic Account settings.
- Want PlayStation friends to see a different name? Change the PlayStation Online ID through PlayStation.
- Want Xbox friends to see a different name? Change the Xbox gamertag through Microsoft/Xbox.
- Want both to change? These are separate operations with separate platform policies; changing one does not rename the others.
The word “display name” can be confusing because Epic and the console networks use similar labels for different fields. Focus on the account that owns the name. Epic’s Account settings page changes only the Epic field, even when you access it through a console-linked account.

Examples of the result
Example: changing an Epic name while keeping an Xbox gamertag
Suppose your Epic display name is “NorthStar” and your Xbox gamertag is “BlueRanger.” Change Display name to “NorthStarHQ” in Epic Account settings. Epic Launcher and supported Epic surfaces show “NorthStarHQ,” while an Xbox session can continue to show “BlueRanger.” Nothing needs to be unlinked.
Example: changing an Epic name while keeping a PSN ID
If your PSN Online ID is “MiraVale” and your Epic display name is “MiraBuilds,” changing the Epic field to “MiraCreates” does not rename “MiraVale.” A PlayStation player may therefore see the PSN identity while a PC or Nintendo Switch player sees the Epic identity.
Example: a Nintendo Switch player
Because Nintendo uses the Epic display name in Epic’s locator, changing the Epic field is the relevant rename for that Switch session. The two-week Epic cooldown still applies.
Example: a console-only account
A player who has never used the Epic Launcher signs in on the website with the Xbox or PlayStation option and is asked to finish account setup. After completing that prompt, the player can verify the email and edit the Epic display name. The console gamertag or PSN ID remains controlled by its original platform.

- You are signed in to the Epic account linked to the correct console profile.
- A console-only account has completed the “Finish Setting Up Your Account” prompt.
- The Epic account email is verified.
- The spelling, capitalization and spacing of the new name are intentional.
- You understand that the next Epic rename is unavailable for two weeks.
- You know whether your target audience is seeing Epic’s name, a PSN ID or an Xbox gamertag.
- You have not started an unlink/relink process merely to rename the account.
If any item is uncertain, pause before selecting Continue. The cooldown makes an avoidable typo inconvenient, and unlinking can create a separate account-access problem that a rename never required.

Will changing my Epic display name change my Xbox gamertag?
No. Xbox controls the gamertag shown on Xbox. Changing the Epic display name updates Epic-controlled surfaces but leaves the Xbox gamertag unchanged.
