Choose Xbox if you want one purchase that works across Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC through Xbox Play Anywhere, with shared progression and achievements, or if you plan to use Game Pass. Choose Steam if Steam is your preferred PC library and you care most about its PC display, graphics, input, handheld and community features. Steam supports cross-platform multiplayer, but its listing is a separate storefront purchase and does not claim Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement.

There is no published benchmark proving that Steam runs faster than Xbox or that one PC storefront has better frame rates. The practical difference is ecosystem and feature preference, not a guaranteed performance advantage.

The Xbox choice covers two related products: the Xbox Series X|S console edition and the Windows 10/11 PC edition sold through the Xbox/Microsoft Store ecosystem. Xbox’s product information lists both platforms and says the game is included with Game Pass. Xbox also announced cloud availability through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, with service and regional availability restrictions.

Buying through Xbox is therefore most useful when your household already uses Xbox accounts, when you own a Series X|S and a Windows PC, or when a subscription is part of your plan. Buying on Steam is a conventional PC-store purchase and does not turn into an Xbox console license.
Xbox Play Anywhere versus Steam ownership
Xbox: one entitlement across console and Xbox PC
Xbox’s FAQ describes Xbox Play Anywhere as allowing play across Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression and achievements. That is the clearest reason to select the Xbox edition when you expect to alternate between a console and the Xbox PC app. Your progression and achievements belong to the connected Xbox ecosystem rather than being isolated to one device.
Steam: a separate PC storefront with optional account linking
The Steam listing presents the game as a Steam purchase and documents optional Microsoft account linking. Linking supports roaming saves, connecting with friends and cross-platform invites. The listing does not describe Steam as an Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement. That distinction means you should not assume a Steam purchase grants the Xbox console copy or the Xbox Play Anywhere benefits.
The official listings do not establish every possible transfer scenario between Steam and Xbox. Do not buy Steam expecting a guaranteed console license, and do not infer that an Xbox purchase automatically adds a Steam license. If moving between storefronts matters, choose the ecosystem in which you expect to spend most of your time.
Crossplay and multiplayer
Steam players can play across platforms
Steam explicitly lists cross-platform multiplayer and online co-op. Its account-linking description says a linked account can enable cross-platform invites, while the feature listing describes two- to four-player online co-op and competitive multiplayer for up to eight players across supported platforms.
This makes Steam a viable choice for a PC player whose friends are on Xbox. You may need to link the optional Microsoft account and use the in-game friend or invite flow, but the Steam listing does not require Steam-only opponents.

Xbox online play has a subscription condition
Xbox states that online multiplayer on Xbox requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. That requirement applies to online Campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus and other online modes on the console side. Check the current plan terms in your region before purchasing solely for multiplayer access; Game Pass names, prices and catalog availability can change.

What every platform can play
- Solo campaign.

- Horde Siege PvE.
- Versus PvP.
- Two-player split-screen on console only.
Cross-platform support does not make console split-screen available on PC or allow four local players on one Xbox. It concerns online play between supported platforms.
PC features: why Steam may be the better fit for a PC enthusiast
The Steam listing advertises a broad set of PC controls and display options. These are capabilities of the PC version, not promises that every graphics card, monitor or handheld can use every option.

Xbox PC is also a Windows release, so the choice is not “high-end PC versus console graphics.” It is a choice between two PC storefront ecosystems. Select Steam for its listed PC-facing controls and Steam features; select Xbox PC when Play Anywhere, Game Pass or Xbox account continuity matters more.
Console presentation and hardware expectations
Xbox describes 4K and up to 60 frames per second across Campaign and Multiplayer, subject to compatible display conditions. This is an Xbox product description rather than an independent measurement or a direct comparison with either PC version. Your television, display mode and console output settings affect what you see.

Game Pass, cloud play and buying outright
Game Pass access
Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day as included with Game Pass and identifies Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass availability. The catalog is regional and can change, so verify the current listing for your country and plan before relying on subscription access.
Cloud availability
Xbox announced cloud availability through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, subject to service and regional availability. Cloud play is an access route rather than a separate storefront ownership model: check whether the service is offered where you live, whether your plan includes the game and whether your connection meets the service’s requirements.
When buying outright makes sense
Buy the Xbox edition outright if you want the Play Anywhere entitlement and do not want your access tied to a changing subscription catalog. Buy Steam outright if you want the game permanently associated with your Steam library and do not need an Xbox console license. Neither decision should be based on a subscription price or catalog entry without checking your region on the day you purchase.
Standard and Premium editions
Xbox lists Standard and Premium editions. The Premium Edition description includes content packs and up to five days of early access. That early-access window was a launch-period benefit before the October 6 release and had already passed by October 13, 2026; it is not a remaining advantage for a new buyer now.
Compare the current edition pages in your region for the exact price and included add-ons. Store currencies, taxes, promotions and bundles vary, and the official listings consulted provide Xbox US edition pricing and Steam regional pricing rather than one universal worldwide price. A higher-priced edition is worthwhile only if its currently available content is valuable to you; do not pay extra today for an early-access period that has ended.
How to choose: a practical decision path
- Identify where you will play first. Choose Xbox Series X|S if your main screen is a console television and you want split-screen. Choose a Windows PC if you want mouse and keyboard, ultrawide support, uncapped frame rates or graphics settings. Both Xbox PC and Steam are PC releases.
- Map your devices. If you expect to alternate between Series X|S and Xbox PC, favor the Xbox/Microsoft Store edition for Xbox Play Anywhere, shared progression and achievements. If you will remain on PC, continue to the storefront questions.
- Check your friends’ platforms. Steam’s listing supports cross-platform multiplayer, so a Steam purchase can play online with supported Xbox players. Link the optional Microsoft account if you need roaming saves, friend connections or cross-platform invites.
- Check subscription access. If Game Pass is already part of your budget, verify the current regional catalog and choose the Xbox ecosystem when it supplies the access you want. For Xbox console online multiplayer, confirm that your Game Pass subscription includes online multiplayer.
- Choose your PC ecosystem. Select Steam if its community features, achievements, Family Sharing, handheld support and familiar library are decisive. Select Xbox PC if Play Anywhere or Xbox account continuity outweighs Steam-specific conveniences.
- Compare the current edition pages. Review Standard and Premium contents, regional currency, taxes and any promotion immediately before checkout. Treat launch-only early access as expired.
Buying and setup steps
Xbox Series X|S or Xbox PC
- Open the Xbox product page on the console or in the Xbox app for Windows.
- Confirm that the page identifies your intended edition and platform. Xbox lists Series X|S and Windows 10/11.
- If using Game Pass, verify that your current plan and region show the game in the catalog before installing.
- Install on the console or Windows PC signed into the Xbox account you intend to use on both devices.
- On Xbox Series X|S, check your Game Pass subscription before starting online Campaign co-op, Horde Siege or Versus.
- For Play Anywhere, launch on the second Xbox ecosystem device with the same account so shared progression and achievements can synchronize.
Steam
- Open the Steam store page and confirm the listed Windows requirements and edition.
- Purchase and install through the Steam account that should own the game.
- Launch the game and decide whether to link a Microsoft account. Linking is optional according to the listing.
- Link the account if you want the listed roaming saves, friend connections and cross-platform invites.
- Configure display mode, aspect ratio, HDR, input remapping and graphics settings for your hardware.
- Run the built-in benchmark, then adjust resolution, ray tracing, upscaling and frame-generation options to suit your own frame-time and image-quality priorities.
Save data and account-linking cautions
Xbox explicitly describes shared progression and achievements within Xbox Play Anywhere. Steam explicitly describes roaming saves when the optional Microsoft account is linked. Those statements are not a blanket promise that every save can be moved freely between a Steam purchase and an Xbox purchase, nor do they establish that buying twice merges all progression automatically.

Before changing storefronts, record which account is linked, keep the original installation available and avoid unlinking accounts casually. If cross-device continuity is your priority, make the Xbox Play Anywhere ecosystem your primary purchase; if Steam is your permanent PC home, keep the linked-account setup consistent there.
Common pitfalls and fixes
“I bought Steam, so why is there no Xbox console license?”
Steam and Xbox are separately listed storefronts. Optional Microsoft account linking provides the Steam features described above, but the Steam listing does not claim Play Anywhere entitlement. An Xbox console license should be purchased through the Xbox ecosystem if that is what you need.
“My PC cannot use every advertised graphics option.”
Ray tracing, DLSS 4.5, FSR Redstone, frame generation, multi-frame generation, HDR and Variable Rate Shading depend on compatible hardware, drivers and display equipment. Turn on only the options your system supports, and use the benchmark rather than assuming a feature guarantees a particular frame rate.
“Crossplay invitations are not appearing.”
Confirm that cross-platform multiplayer is enabled, that the Microsoft account is linked where required for the invite flow and that every player is using the current game version. Platform privacy, parental-control and friend settings can also block invitations.
“I expected split-screen on PC.”
The Xbox description identifies two-player split-screen as console-only. Use Xbox Series X|S for that local mode; PC players should use online co-op.

Xbox requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer for online Campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus and other online features. Check the subscription attached to the console account and the current regional plan terms.

“The Premium Edition no longer gives early access.”
Up to five days of early access was tied to the launch period before October 6, 2026. On October 13 and later, evaluate Premium only by the content packs and other benefits that remain available on the current listing.
Other launch items are not platform advantages
Xbox announced an official companion book, The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day, from Insight Editions, covering developer interviews on art, story, sound and design. It is optional reading and does not affect which game storefront you should buy.
A limited-edition Gears of War: E-Day Xbox Wireless Controller was also announced as an optional fan accessory. It is not required to play and does not establish a performance benefit for the Xbox version. Check current inventory and the exact model before purchasing.
Final recommendation
For a Series X|S owner, a player switching between Xbox and Windows PC, or anyone using Game Pass, buy through Xbox. Play Anywhere is the decisive ownership feature, and the console edition is the one that provides listed split-screen support.
For a PC-only player whose library and friends are on Steam, Steam is the sensible choice. Its listing confirms cross-platform multiplayer and adds PC-oriented options such as ultrawide layouts, remappable controls, HDR, ray tracing, upscaling, frame generation, a benchmark and handheld optimization. Those options require suitable hardware, and they are not proof of higher performance than Xbox PC.
If both ecosystems fit, decide based on where you want the entitlement to live. Xbox prioritizes cross-device progression and subscription access; Steam prioritizes a dedicated PC storefront and its surrounding features. Recheck your regional price, edition contents, Game Pass catalog and cloud availability immediately before checkout.
