Think of the settings as a small identity set rather than three unrelated labels. The hostname can include a concise tag such as a language marker, while the project name gives the community a stable, recognizable identity. The description then explains the experience in one short sentence. Keeping the values coordinated prevents a player from seeing one name in one context and an unrelated name elsewhere.
How to change the name and description in server.cfg
- Open the active configuration. Locate
server.cfgin the server’s root/configuration directory, or open it through your hosting provider’s file manager. If the host offers a configuration editor, it may be editing this file for you. Ensure you are changing the configuration the running server actually loads. - Make a backup before editing. Save a copy of the current file, or use your panel’s backup/version feature if one exists. A backup lets you restore a known-working configuration if a typo causes a startup problem.
- Find existing values before adding new ones. Search the file for
sv_hostname,sv_projectNameandsv_projectDesc. Edit the existing active lines instead of adding another set elsewhere in the file. Duplicate definitions or a second configuration file can make it unclear which value the server is using. - Enter all three values using straight quotation marks. Replace the example text with your own name and description. Keep the quote marks plain ASCII double quotes, not curly typographic quotes. A description containing punctuation is fine as long as the complete value remains inside the quotes.
- Use the correct prefix. Write
sv_hostnameon its own line. Putsetsbefore bothsv_projectNameandsv_projectDesc. Do not putsetsin front of the hostname just to make all three lines look alike. - Save the file. Confirm that the editor reports the save completed and that you changed the server’s active configuration, not a local copy or backup. If your panel has separate Save and Apply buttons, complete both.
- Fully restart the FiveM server. Stop and start the server process, or use the host panel’s full restart control. A resource restart or configuration reload is insufficient for these values to take effect according to the listing guidance from xGamingServer.
- Check the server list after startup. Search for the server and inspect the name and project details. Allow the server to finish starting before deciding the change failed. If necessary, reconnect or refresh the client listing so you are not looking at an older result.
For example, a community called Northstar Roleplay could use:

Editing through a hosting panel versus editing the file
There are two common ways to make the change. Direct file editing gives you a clear view of every definition and is useful when you need to search for duplicates or compare several configuration files. A managed panel may be easier for routine changes, but the panel can also generate or override the file when the server starts. In that case, changing a manually uploaded copy may have no lasting effect.

Choose a hostname players can recognize
Make the server identity easy to distinguish from the project name if you use both for different purposes. For instance, the hostname can include a concise language or roleplay-style tag, while sv_projectName carries the community’s recognizable name. Do not assume that a longer hostname will be fully visible: a Cfx.re forum post reports that when sv_projectName is absent the server may fall back to sv_hostname, which can be truncated in the list. A practical naming pattern is to put the distinctive community name first, followed by only the qualifier a player needs to identify the server. Examples include a language marker such as [EN] or a concise style label such as Serious RP. Avoid using the hostname as a long advertisement: players may see only part of it, and the project metadata still needs to be set independently.

Keep the project description short and specific
Cfx.re’s documentation describes sv_projectDesc as a short description written as a sentence. Use it to tell a prospective player what kind of community or experience the server offers, rather than copying the whole hostname or listing every feature. For example: "A serious roleplay community with custom jobs and vehicles."
A useful sentence answers the immediate question, “What will I find here?” It can identify the roleplay style and one or two defining features, as in “A serious roleplay community with custom jobs and vehicles.” It does not need a complete ruleset, staff list, changelog or Discord announcement. Those longer details belong in your community channels, not in this short metadata field.
No confirmed official character limit is available in the cited material. If the old name or description still appears
Work through these checks in order. They address common configuration and restart issues without assuming that every stale listing has the same cause.
- Confirm that the full server restarted. A resource restart does not apply these settings. Stop and start the server process, then inspect the listing again. If the panel offers separate Restart Resource and Restart Server controls, choose the full server option.
- Check the active file and configuration path. Make sure you edited the
server.cfgloaded by the live server. If your setup uses more than one configuration file, check each file for another definition of the same setting. A backup, template or local download is not necessarily the file used at startup. - Look for duplicate setting lines. - Changing only

Do I need all three settings?

Can I change the name while the server is running?
