To switch from your laptop’s built-in microphone to a headset mic on Windows, change the input device in Windows Sound settings—not Roblox. Roblox’s documented microphone controls mute or unmute your mic; they do not offer a general hardware input selector.
Choose a different microphone in Windows

Open Settings > System > Sound.

Under Input, select the microphone you want under Choose a device for speaking or recording. Windows must detect the microphone before it can appear in this list. [Microsoft Support]

Check that the microphone is connected and not muted. If you cannot select it, troubleshoot its connection and detection in Windows before returning to Roblox. [Microsoft Support]

Return to Roblox and join an experience that supports voice. Use Roblox’s microphone control to unmute if needed. If Roblox does not use the newly selected device in the current session, leave the experience and rejoin after changing the Windows input.

If Roblox cannot access the microphone
Windows privacy settings can prevent apps from using a microphone even when the device is selected. In Windows microphone privacy settings, enable microphone access and app access; for Roblox as a desktop app, check that Let desktop apps access your microphone is enabled. [Microsoft Support]
If voice chat controls are missing
Changing the Windows input device will not enable voice chat on an account or in an experience that does not support it. Roblox says voice chat is not enabled by default; access depends on eligibility, age checking for eligible users aged 13 or older, regional availability, and experience support. Roblox describes its in-experience voice control as “Voice chat: Toggle microphone (On/Off)”. That control switches the microphone on or off; it is not a device picker. [Roblox Experience Controls]

The Windows input-selection steps above apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Roblox voice availability across multiple platforms does not establish that every platform offers a user-selectable input device setting, and the sources cited here do not provide device-selection steps for macOS, iOS, Android, or consoles. On those platforms, check the operating system’s audio input settings rather than assuming Roblox has a dedicated selector.
