The setting you need depends on the platform whose name Fortnite displays. Change your Epic Games display name for Fortnite on PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. On PlayStation and Xbox, Fortnite uses the name attached to your console account, so you must change the PSN online ID or Xbox gamertag instead.
Which Fortnite name are you changing?
| Where you play | Name Fortnite displays | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account settings |
| Nintendo Switch | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account settings |
| Mobile | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account settings |
| PlayStation | PlayStation Network (PSN) online ID | PlayStation account settings |
| Xbox | Xbox gamertag | Microsoft/Xbox account settings |
Epic Games states that changing its display name does not change your PSN online ID or Xbox gamertag. As a result, the name shown in Fortnite can differ between PC, Switch or mobile and a console.

How to change your Fortnite name on PC, Switch, or mobile
These platforms use the Epic Games display name. The change is made in a web browser through your Epic account rather than through a separate mobile-only rename control.
- Sign in to your Epic Games account on the Epic Games website.
- Open Account Settings.
- Make sure the account’s email address is verified. Epic requires a verified email before allowing a display-name change.
- Find the Display Name field and enter the name you want to use.
- Select Continue to submit the change.
If the Display Name field has a lock icon, select the information icon beside the current name. It shows when the next change is available. Epic permits an Epic display-name change once every two weeks, so you must wait until that cooldown ends if the field is locked.

If you only played Fortnite on console
A console-only player may have an Epic account that was created automatically through the console sign-in but not fully completed. Sign in to the Epic Games website using the PlayStation or Xbox sign-in option connected to Fortnite. When Epic shows Finish Setting Up Your Account, complete that process. You can then open Account Settings and manage the Epic display name.
How to change your Fortnite name on PlayStation
Fortnite on PlayStation shows the name associated with your PlayStation Network account. Editing the Epic display name will not change it. Use PlayStation’s current account-management process to change your PSN online ID, following the instructions for your console and region in official PlayStation support.

Because PlayStation’s screens and regional policies can change, use the current instructions shown in your PlayStation account settings rather than relying on an old in-game guide. Your Epic display name remains separately managed in Epic Account Settings.
How to change your Fortnite name on Xbox
Xbox Fortnite lobbies use the Xbox gamertag. Change that gamertag through the Microsoft/Xbox account process, not by editing the Epic display name. Open the account settings available for your Xbox profile and follow the current Xbox instructions for changing a gamertag.

As with PlayStation, the exact screens and any regional conditions are controlled by the platform. Changing the gamertag does not rename the Epic account itself, so the two names may still be different on other devices.
Will changing a console name delete Fortnite progress or purchases?
Epic says a console display-name change does not remove Fortnite progress, purchases, or content saved to the Epic Games account linked to that console. This applies to changing the console account’s displayed name; it is not a guarantee about unlinking an account, switching account ownership, or disconnecting the console from Epic.

Why is my Fortnite name different on console?
This is expected when your Epic display name and console account name are different. PC, Switch, and mobile use the Epic display name, while PlayStation uses the PSN online ID and Xbox uses the gamertag. Changing one does not automatically change the others.

Epic’s support index includes a specific help topic for a changed name that does not appear in a Switch Fortnite lobby. Use that official Switch display-name troubleshooting article for the current fix. The available guidance does not establish a universal synchronization delay, so do not assume that waiting a particular number of minutes will resolve every case.

Fortnite display-name rules and rejected names
Epic maintains separate rules for display names. The currently available guidance does not establish the complete character, length, or formatting requirements, so check Epic’s own display-name rules when a proposed name is rejected.
Under Epic’s End User License Agreement, Epic may change a display name that is offensive or misleading, violates its Community Rules, or infringes another person’s rights. Choose a name that complies with those standards even if the account form accepts it initially.
