On Nintendo Switch, open the profile you want to edit, choose User Settings, then Edit Icon. You can also reach the profile through System Settings > Users. From there, choose a character or Mii and adjust the background. Nintendo’s Switch profile settings instructions cover Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model.
Change your icon from the HOME Menu
- On the HOME Menu, select the user page for the profile whose icon you want to change.
- Select User Settings.
- Under Profile Settings, select Edit Icon.
- Choose a character or Mii, then adjust the background and confirm your selection.
Make sure you opened the correct user page: the change applies to that console profile. You do not need to change the nickname or play-activity settings to update its icon.
Use System Settings instead
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Users, then choose the profile you want to edit.
- Open Edit Icon under Profile Settings.
- Select a character or Mii, set the background, and confirm.
Choose a standard icon or a custom one
The editor lets you select a character or Mii and adjust the icon’s background. Nintendo Switch Online members can also create custom user icons. Nintendo’s instructions do not establish that custom icons are available to users without a membership.
Fix a Mii missing after a transfer
Nintendo documents a specific case in which a profile may show a question mark, the Mii may not be editable, or an error may say Mii data cannot be found after a User & Save Data Transfer. For that transfer-related problem, Nintendo gives this recovery path:

- Open the affected user’s page.
- Select Profile > Edit Icon > Character/Mii.
- Scroll to the Mii option and select the Mii used before the User & Save Data Transfer.

Interface note for Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo documents comparable routes on Switch 2: select the user page or go to System Settings > Users, then use Edit Icon to choose a character or Mii and adjust the background.
