You can customize a Nintendo Switch profile in two different ways: edit a character or Mii in the regular profile settings, or use Nintendo Switch Online’s Missions & Rewards icon maker to assemble a custom icon from eligible collectible parts. Mii edits and NSO icons use separate menus; the NSO option requires an active paid membership.
What can you customize in each icon editor?
| Feature | Built-in character or Mii icon | Nintendo Switch Online custom icon |
|---|---|---|
| Where to start | Your user page or profile settings in System Settings. Nintendo Support explains the standard profile icon settings. | Nintendo Switch Online on the HOME Menu, then Missions & Rewards. Nintendo’s instructions cover the custom-icon workflow. |
| Customization | Choose a character or Mii and change the background. Nintendo Japan also documents changing a Mii’s expression and pose. See Nintendo Japan’s profile icon instructions. | Combine eligible character, frame, and background elements, subject to collection compatibility. |
| Membership or points | The cited standard profile instructions do not state that an NSO membership is needed. | An active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. Elements can be redeemed with My Nintendo Platinum Points or may have other listed conditions. |
| Where you select the finished icon | The standard profile icon editor. | The Icon Collection in Nintendo Switch Online, not the ordinary System Settings or user-page picker. |
| Storage | No icon limit is stated in the cited standard profile instructions. | Nintendo says the collection can hold up to 100 created icons. Redeemed elements remain accessible if membership ends. |
How to edit a built-in Mii or character icon
- Open your user page from the HOME Menu, or open System Settings and go to the profile settings.
- Choose the profile icon option, then select a character or Mii.
- Adjust the available background. For a Mii, Nintendo Japan’s instructions also describe changing its expression and pose.
- Confirm the changes in the profile editor.
This route edits the supplied character or Mii options. The cited instructions do not describe importing an arbitrary picture or creating a freeform graphic in the built-in editor.
How to create and use an NSO custom icon
Check access and redeem elements
Nintendo’s documented process requires a Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch, an internet connection, and an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The North American guide also covers Switch Lite and OLED models. On the HOME Menu, open Nintendo Switch Online, select the user, and choose Missions & Rewards. Review the available elements and any conditions shown, then redeem the parts you want using Platinum Points or by meeting the stated requirement. Nintendo’s step-by-step guide is at How to Create and Use a Custom Nintendo Switch Online User Icon.
Assemble and select the icon
- Open Icon Collection in Nintendo Switch Online.
- Start creating from the Icons screen with the plus icon, or choose an element from the Icon Elements screen.
- Choose eligible character, frame, and background parts, then save the icon.
- Select the saved icon from the Icon Collection to use it for your profile.
Menu labels can vary by regional localization. Nintendo’s April 7, 2026 icon-maker article describes the same feature and its use through Nintendo Switch Online.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Which NSO icon parts can be combined?
The NSO maker is a parts-based editor, but it does not offer unrestricted mixing. Nintendo says elements are generally compatible with other elements from the same game collection; generic frames and backgrounds can also be used. A character element that already includes a background may not accept a separate background. Check the available combinations in the editor rather than assuming parts from unrelated games can be freely combined.

Nintendo describes themes changing monthly and available elements refreshing weekly. Some rewards can have additional conditions, such as a membership tier or recent play of a particular game. The selection is therefore not a fixed catalog: check Missions & Rewards on your console for the current rewards and requirements. Nintendo introduced Missions & Rewards in its June 5, 2025 explainer.
