To change the name shown on your PlayStation profile, go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Online ID on your PS4. Sony calls this your online ID; it is not the email address you use to sign in. The first change is free, but check game compatibility before confirming because some games can be affected.
Change your online ID from a PS4
- On the PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Online ID.
- Enter the new online ID you want. If it is available, select Continue.
- Choose whether your old ID should appear beside your new one on your profile for 30 days. This is optional and must be selected during the change.
- Review and confirm the change. Sony says you will be signed out of all devices afterward.
Your online ID is the unique display name used to identify your PlayStation account. Your sign-in ID is your email address, and changing the online ID does not change that email. Sony also documents a web option: sign in to account management, open Profile, select Edit beside your current ID, enter an available ID, and follow the prompts. Is changing your PSN name free?
Sony says the first online ID change is free and additional changes are charged. Its current US instructions do not state the later-change fee, so check the price shown in your region before confirming another change. The process does not require buying a product.

Will friends still recognize you?
During the change, you can opt to show your old online ID next to the new one on your profile for 30 days. If you want friends to have that transition cue, select it in the change flow; Sony does not describe it as an automatic setting.

Check game compatibility before changing
Changing an ID can affect some games and services. Sony’s compatibility list identifies tested games and potential issues; games not listed have not been tested and may have problems. Possible effects include inaccessible previously acquired content, lost game or trophy progress, broken features, unlinked accounts, reset settings, or the old ID continuing to appear in some places. Review Sony’s tested-games list and compatibility guidance before you proceed.
Sony says PS4 games first published on or after April 1, 2018 were developed to support online ID changes. That is not a guarantee that every such game will work without issues. In the list’s critical-issues category, Sony warns of possible losses involving in-game currency, progress, user-generated content, or functionality; if you want to keep those entitlements and achievements in an affected listed game, Sony advises against changing your ID.

What to do if a game has problems afterward
- Check your games promptly after the change for disruptions or missing data, as Sony recommends.
- If you encounter a problem, you can return to your original online ID for free. Sony says reverting should resolve most issues, but it may not restore some—or any—lost content, progress, or functionality.
- Contact PlayStation Support about account problems, including an unauthorized ID change or a new ID that still is not showing after more than one week. PlayStation Support: Online ID change issues.
Can a child account change its online ID?
No. Sony says an online ID cannot be changed for a child account. It directs eligible child members to account-upgrade guidance, but eligibility depends on the account.
