You can change your Roblox display name to Japanese characters through Account Settings → Account Info → Change Display Name—but only if Roblox has enabled its Japanese-character beta for your account. This changes your display name, not your username.
Change your Roblox display name to Japanese characters
- Log in to your Roblox account.
- Open Account Settings. On the website, select the gear icon in the upper-right corner. In the mobile app, tap the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Account Info.
- Select Change Display Name, shown with a pencil-and-paper icon. Some accounts may show the field as Name.
- Enter the Japanese-character name you want and save it.
- Refresh the page or app to check that the new display name appears separately from your username.
Roblox describes Japanese-character support as a beta that is not available to all users. If you cannot find the display-name control or Roblox rejects the name, access may not be enabled for your account, or the name may not pass filtering. Roblox does not publish an eligibility checklist or a complete list of accepted Japanese character combinations. Roblox Support’s display-name guidance explains the setting and beta limitation.
Display name or username: which one are you changing?
A display name is the customizable public-facing name shown on Roblox and in associated experiences. A username is the unique identifier for your account. You can use a display name that another player already has; display names do not have to be unique. Roblox says changing a display name is free, while changing a username requires Robux. The username change is a separate action and is not needed to set a Japanese display name. Roblox’s Japanese username-change support page describes the username requirement.
Rules and timing for display-name changes
- Seven-day limit: Roblox says you can change your display name once every seven days.
- Filtering and conduct rules: Names must comply with Roblox’s Community Standards and Terms of Use, and platform text is filtered. A name that does not comply may be reset to your username.
- Public visibility: Your display name and username are visible on Roblox and associated experiences.
- Japanese-character access: Support for Japanese characters is in beta and may not be enabled for every account. Roblox’s guidance does not state a rollout date.
For the current account steps and beta caveat, see Roblox Support’s display-name article and its Japanese-language display-name guidance.
