Upload a flat PNG skin, select its Classic/Wide or Slim model, and finish with Save and Use. You can also upload a skin through your Minecraft profile in a browser.
Change your skin in Minecraft Launcher
- Open Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition in the left-side menu.
- Open the Skins tab. You can choose a built-in skin, or select New Skin to upload your own.
- For a custom skin, enter a name and choose Classic/Wide or Slim.
- Select Browse, find the skin PNG on your device, and upload it. The image needs to be a flat, unwrapped skin file; you can download a ready-made PNG or create one with an image editor.
- Select Save and Use to make the skin active.

Choose the right skin model
The model setting determines the arm shape, so match it to the design of the skin file. Classic/Wide has the traditional wider arms; Slim has narrower arms. Minecraft describes Steve’s classic arms as four pixels wide and Alex’s slim arms as three pixels wide. Choosing the wrong model can make the arm design look incorrect.
Upload through your Minecraft profile in a browser
If you prefer the website, Minecraft Help Center also documents uploading from the Java skin page in your Minecraft profile. Choose the Classic or Slim model, locate the custom-skin upload area, select the PNG file, and upload it. The official instructions are in Make a Custom Skin in Minecraft: Java Edition. Labels may differ by locale. The support article says Slim arms are fully supported in version 1.8 and later.

Java Edition and Bedrock use different skin workflows
These instructions are for Minecraft: Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses the Dressing Room for character appearance, rather than the Java Launcher’s skin library and PNG upload flow. For Launcher access or installation, Minecraft’s Download Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition page lists installation options through the Microsoft Store or Minecraft.net.
